Is there anything that replicates the taste and mouth feel of old Dairy Milk?

As in how dairy milk used to feel and taste, not dairy milk that is old
DH regularly laments old Dairy Milk, it really is his happy food! And he doesn’t have many vices, I would love to get him some for Christmas.
Thanks

Why hasn’t there been a backlash about what’s happened to Dairy Milk?
I wonder if the sales have fallen?
Id love to see the stats.

S African Dairy Milk is still pretty good - tastes like I remember it tasting years ago.

Palm oil can get to feck!

Sgtmajormummy · 29/11/2025 10:54

Marabou milk chocolate from IKEA. It’s sort of Rolo shaped but the taste is very like original Dairy milk.
Or if you come to Italy the premium blue and gold NOVI milk chocolate made with cream (panna) is excellent.

Almostwelsh · 29/11/2025 10:57

Cadburys Flakes or Twirls still taste similar to the old Dairy Milk. I think the new recipe doesn't work for flakey chocolate

WhatterySquash · 29/11/2025 11:00

Agree M&S is nice. I also discovered co-op “chocolate for change” recently, not exactly Cadbury’s-alike but the milk variety is amazing.

It's the same with Galaxy too :( my partner also loves Cadburys and says it tastes so bad now, waxy texture and the taste of artificial sweetener.

I have a theory based on taste alone that the flakier (like Cadbury flakes and Galaxy ripples) products are still of the old recipe, or closer to it, maybe because in order to get that texture the crappier new recipes didn't work?

I'll be trying the M&S ones too, it's promising how the dark milk is described as fruity!

I agree with that… the Twirl bite size pieces in a share bag still taste good. Or did the last time I had some earlier this year!

MeandBobbyMcGoo · 29/11/2025 11:06

I agree with Irish Dairy Milk

Isn’t it an absolute sin what has happened to cadburys chocolate.

I would pay more for it to be like it was. Way more.

I know, me too! I was thinking about this the other day. If they would produce an 80s recipe bar, with the big square chunks, the foil and everything LOADS of people would pay 2 or even 3 times the price of the current chemical
waste they currently produce. I’ve gone from eating cadburys several times a week to never, so surely there’s a profit to be made?

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 29/11/2025 12:37

People are suggesting nice chocolate but the OP specifically wants the nostalgia of proper Cadburys. I learned on here the the little bars for kids taste like real Cadburys and they do.

Yes! I hadn't had a flake for years and then had one last week and enjoyed it. Whereas I've pretty much given up Cadbury's choc in general now.

Same here. It's actually got me to give up chocolate because I don't like Galaxy either.

Fredos! They are still made in the UK and are the closest to old Cadbury

Why though? Surely Cadbury aren’t using different recipes for different sizes of bar?

They are. My friend is gluten free and can have Freddos but not others.

little bars
buttons and freddos all taste like they used to. And they melt properly.

It's still not as good as old dairy milk so might not quite hit the mark, but the Dairy Milk in Ireland has a different (nicer!) taste IMO. They also have some Ireland-only products like the Mint Crisp dairy milk.

Echo this. Our local Morrison’s sells the mint crisp, tiffin and ?honeycomb bars. They are so much nicer than regular dairy milk

Had some dairy milk chunks in a Heroes tub recently and they tasted so bad. Oily and actually tasted mouldy. Has really put me off dairy milk.

I gave up with dairy milk ages ago, you are so right about the oily texture, it used to be the most divine chocolate and now tastes awful

AutumnClouds · 29/11/2025 18:03

Tested this out this afternoon for the sake of culinary science - I ate a thin waxy disappointment of a bar of fruit and nut (my former favourite), and a bag of buttons. The buttons were far better and more like the old stuff. Looking at the ingredients they do still seem to have palm oil so not sure what the difference is.

I like Tony’s the best

But they all have palm oil in them which is the cause of the decline in taste

I guess it’s ratio.

DefiniteMeteor · 01/12/2025 14:33

Thanks all…. I think the mouthfeel is important too so I don’t think the little bars will replicate. I have ordered the Whittakers and the marks one for Christmas Day and hopefully one of them will replicate!

Please, I beg of you. Please don’t use the phrase: mouth feel.

DefiniteMeteor · 01/12/2025 14:56

I’m completely wedded to the phrase mouth feel. It’s the feel of it in your mouth. Mouth feel. It couldn’t be a more elegant or economic phrase.

mouth feel

merry Christmas

mouth feel

@DefiniteMeteor I hope you enjoy the Whittakers. I ordered 6 bars in the sale!
I can confirm from previous experience that it does indeed have a good mouth feel. The chunks are satisfyingly chunky and they melt like Cadbury’s used to.
Please update your opinion on it when you get to try it 😀

I had one in a Halloween multi pack recently and was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was.

So I ate them all 🫣
