Christmas candle

What do you recommend? I spent a fortune on the white company winter range last year for it to smell of nothing. Hugely disappointing. I quite like bath and body works candles but they can be a bit artificial smelling. I like the smell of a Christmas tree but not pine toilet cleaner!

I've also bought a Christmas Yankee one this year called North Pole which is fresh and slightly minty. I love mint and am enjoying this but I'm not sure how chrustmassy it really is.

But the fragrance and throw are great.

Agreed with you about white company last year!

I'm a fan of the sand+ fog winter pine (get in tk maxx though!) I think that's Christmas tree without being toilet cleaner.

I don't mind the Sainsbury's Christmas candles either. They aren't quite as strong as some, but they smell pleasant.

I've only had a neom sleep candle - and I was so disappointed with it, I'd not buy another one.

I was about to suggest the Sand and Fog winter pine one. It’s lovely.

I’ve always loved winter, as feel it’s the one that drifts through the house. But my sister bought me Neom perfect peace last week and I absolutely love it. It’s such a lovely aromatherapy fragrance, literally like smelling the bottle of oil. Smells natural and not artificial.
I also love snow fall by Lilly flame though, which is much cheaper.

Everyone always slates Yankee candles on these threads but I have spent/ wasted a small fortune on candles and always end up returning to ymYankee for the sheer throw they give.
I avoid the super sweet ones but the lavender lemon is a great fresh one and soft blanket a cosy one.

Every christmas I get their christmas eve candle. I think it's a warm slightly sweet cosy scent. I'd have to look the notes up. But it's become the smell of christmas here now and always fills the house.

I also found the white company Winter didn't provide the throw for the price. I've tried their Myrhh candle this year, again disappointing.

I also still burn YC Christmas Eve every Xmas Eve-boxing day, only the original though, I’m a bit sad and I bought a bunch of older versions on eBay that are originals poured in USA before the Czech Republic factory opened and used different ingredients with less throw. (There’s a sticker at the bottom with a code that you can decipher the year it was poured from).

Wood wick cinnamon chai is nice for Christmas. Neon candles are nice but nothing amazing for the extra price tag. I had Winter last year from the white company and honestly loved it. Never tried St Eval but am very tempted to. We have a shop locally that sells them.
I buy a lot of candles from TK Maxx and some are lovely. Currently burning vanilla pumpkin by DW and it smells incredible.

hdksbhhhh · 28/11/2025 08:32

White company mulled wine has an amazing throw but I think it’s discontinued, you can pick up on eBay at a reasonable price last time I looked.

Yankee candle's cinnamon stick is nice. But make sure it's that exact one, there are others with cinnamon in the name and they aren't nice.

I love that one too

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/11/2025 08:48

Best candles ever are a small independent brand called Ohros, amazing scent throw, I always go back to them when I want a treat.
But randomly bought a couple of Aldi candles recently (blackberry and a bay and a Christmas gingerbread one) and have been very impressed that both have scented the room, I didn’t expect them to

Hedjwitch · 28/11/2025 08:55

For churchy incense buy frankincense resin and burn over a candle. Its smells gorgeous. Also drops of essential oil on radiators or in a small bowl of water on a wood burner smell divine and no synthetic chemicals. For Christmassy smells use frankincense, myrhh, pine, orange, clove, cinammon etc.

Lovely affordable candles are Isle of Skye candles.

boredwfh · 28/11/2025 08:57

I love the Winter range from White company but I don’t think it’s as strong this year. I usually buy the whole range but I’m hugely disappointed this year. Even in an enclosed space like my porch I can hardly smell it.

IggysPop · 28/11/2025 08:59

Depends how much you want to spend.

A paraffin wax will send an excellent hot throw and are good value for money. I hate paraffin and paraffin mix candles and so don’t tend to buy them - yankee candles case in point. If you are used to this sort of generally less pricey candle you may be disappointed by the scent throw of a vegetable-based wax.

I prefer fresh herbal scents - so rosemary, sage etc. I have had good products in this category from these companies.

St Ives. Probably one of the best mineral and vegetable mix candles at a decent price.

Neom. Excellent quality - I have not been disappointed in 10+ years and they have 25% off at the moment.

Norfolk Natural Living - had some nice candles from here. Not tried a Christmas one though.

Trudon. The COST. But wonderful scent throw and even burn.

Perfumer H. Bought myself ‘salt’ as a Christmas present - also has 20% off at the moment.

save your money and get the Aldi dupes- a fraction of the price and just as good

christmasideers · 28/11/2025 09:36

@MalagaNights i think maybe it’s too much throw for me, I just end up feeling like I’m breathing it in. I do like the Christmas Eve one and the soft blanket unlit though!

I light mine in my hallway, which is large, and I like a fragrance which carries to the top floors (3 stories) so I guess where you burn it makes a difference to your needs.

Aldi ones didn't work for me.

I find that Aldi smell of nothing once lit.

Nest New York candles are excellent, I've been burning the minis (57g) and they've lasted well and have great scent throw. Birchwood Pine is Christmas tree but not Domestos. Holiday is also nice, sort of like White Company Winter.

What about the White Company diffuser oils? I have them for my electronic diffuser and they're good. If it's not scented enough you just add more drops, and fewer chemicals to breathe in than candles.

Floortoceiling · 28/11/2025 10:24

Another vote for St Eval's Winter Thyme, and also (though insanely expensive) Diptique's Sapin.

Love the frankincense resin and Prinknash Abbey incense suggestions, though Prinknash def need to improve the descriptions of the scent of each of their products - 'a blend of aromatic oils' doesn't tell you anything. Bet they'd sell more if they did)

NeedATreat · 28/11/2025 12:42

St Eval Winter Thyme for me. I have the gold specked pillar candle, and it’s beautiful.

Bath and bodyworks they are in some next stores in uk

I almost always get my candles from there, once many years ago I bought a Miller Harris one for about £12 and I still dream about it. The scent was so gorgeous, the whole house was fragrant and the candle lasted ages. Never seen one in there since, but I always hope! .
