Xmas gifts I hate receiving

JammyRed · 24/11/2025 10:37

As Christmas is approaching the gifts I dread getting that I get every year are : Xmas themed socks , slipper socks , body lotion , body scrub. Christmas ornaments , Christmas mugs and glasses . Really cheap pound shop chocolate . Mulled wine or spicy biscuits. They don’t go to waste as I donate them to charity . What are the gifts you dread getting ?

OP posts:
StinkerTroll · 24/11/2025 17:28

Anything that goes on my skin unless specifically requested, I have eczema and only use trusted brands

Carandache18 · 24/11/2025 17:35

Bags of flower bulbs that are beginning to sprout so they need planting, straight away, at once, preferably on Christmas day in the morning because if you don't you're a plant murderer.

MyChristmasCheerHasBuggeredOff · 24/11/2025 17:36

I love everything you said OP...

They are my favourite things to get.

AtWitsEnd21 · 24/11/2025 17:39

My family have implemented a secret Santa. So now instead of random stuff that piles up we get one thoughtful/wanted present each. This year DH family have implemented no presents. I’m delighted I absolutely hate the scented candle, soap gift set, random chocolates rubbish at Christmas.

Invinoveritaz · 24/11/2025 17:39

Cheap toiletry sets - I’m very fussy what I use
Xmas themed anything
scented candles that are not beeswax or soya wax
chocolates or biscuits - I don’t eat either
Homemade chutneys - I don’t like anything with sultanas.

Judellie · 24/11/2025 17:45

Candles. Detest the things and we have electricity now anyway. Also anything from the likes of Lush and why are those awful bath bombs still a thing?!

EchoedSilence · 24/11/2025 17:46

I like everything the OP said. But then I'm not a snob.

JH0404 · 24/11/2025 17:48

Not for myself but my husband always gets at least one gift of novelty chilli chocolate every Christmas…… why? Just why would you even make this??

I still disagree.

I think it's rude and entitled to be given a cash gift, and then moan that there's no effort. How spoil do you have to be to dismiss a nice gesture 😂

Bet you would be one of those posters horrified to receive a hand-made gift.

Or, if you want to be as mean as you are, maybe it's a hint: your gifts are crap and they are begging you to stop giving them stuff they don't like

I loovvveee a gift card. I struggle to spend guilt free, even if I got cash I would be tempted to save it or put it towards bills.
A gift card to one of my favourite shops is the ultimate gulit free splurges!

Katypp · 24/11/2025 17:48

Haven't read the full thread, but the MN Bingo Card usually consists of:

  1. Scented candles: Anything apart from Diptyque gives MNetters migrane
  2. Chocolates: Specifically any chocolates that can be bought on the high street or shudders the supermarket. A small box of fresh artisan chocolates from a bespoke chocolatier MAY be acceptable as long as there is no palm oil
  3. Bath bombs: All MNetters get thrush at the sight of anything less than £50 a bottle, they just do
  4. ANYTHING from Bayliss and Harding, see thrush above and add itching. Again strangely, anything costing more than £50 does not seem to cause any problems.
  5. Any 'tat' that is not to the posters exquisite taste
  6. NOTHING bought from a supermarket is ever acceptable as it screams that the giver has not spent hours debating the perfect gift for the givee, who is the partner of the present giver's cousin. The poster has of course carefully selected things she knows the distant relative will just love.
  7. Bayliss and Harding, Lush, Hotel Chocolat, Yankee Candles and (new for this year I think) Lindor are never acceptable under any circumstances.
CantBreathe90 · 24/11/2025 17:48

Everything everyone else has said, plus ornaments and paintings / wall hangings. I try to choose not have them cluttering the place up with dust. There are lots that I like the look of, but avoid buying for this reason.

Having cats also brings the cat related presents, most of which are nasty...
Coasters
Tea towels
Mugs
A tray (to match the coasters)
Jigsaw
Socks
Humorous cat books
Ornaments
Biscuit jar (I actually like this)
Basically, if you can put a picture of a cat on it someone has bought it for us.

I really like all the cat tat - anything with a cat (especially a Siamese!) on it makes me happy!

hazelnutvanillalatte · 24/11/2025 17:50

Miniature toiletries sets.

booknerdhead · 24/11/2025 17:51

Hand cream, books people ‘know’ I will love and as a musician, anything music themed, treble clef earrings and brooches.
My late DH once mentioned he liked pigs. Cue years of rubber, ceramic and every sort of pig. Same with jigsaws. Ended up with cupboards full.

I’m reminded of a character in a novel I read. An aunt who painted all day, every day. The family were all given a horrible picture for Xmas, birthdays etc.

endocolonoscopy · 24/11/2025 17:51

anything babyliss and harding
scarves
cheap chocolate
all gets donated on

Nothing wrong with Babyliss products !
Bayliss however…!

Reminds me (with a shudder) of my ex. I mentioned one day casually in passing that I quite liked owls. Cue YEARS of every single gift being owl-related; usually those rather scary ceramic owl models that look as if the damn thing will come to life at midnight and take your throat out.

And the year I carefully and with diagrams told him that I wanted a dressing gown for Christmas - whereupon he told me I didn't, and gave me stuffed owls.

Nightmare fuel, I tell you.

Burnthroughthewitches · 24/11/2025 18:03

No cheap, nasty, palm-oiled plastic garbage 'chocolate' like Cadbury's, Galaxy, Hershey's, etc. Lidl chocolate is fine, as the ingredients are of higher quality than the above. Lindt is ok too.

No lotions, creams, scrubs, masks, conditioners and the like. I don't use any of it, except for a particular moisturiser for my face, a serum, shower gel, and shampoo.

Candles, hate candles. And also random ornaments, which are never to my taste.

Socks, slippers, book vouchers, alcohol, consumables - all those are fine.

WhineAndWine1 · 24/11/2025 18:03

@Katypp happy to be a number 5

user1471538283 · 24/11/2025 18:13

Nothing perfumed unless it's a perfume I wear. I've got very sensitive skin so I only use certain things. But I buy and receive few physical gifts anymore (except to and from the DC) as we tend to go to dinner or a spa as we've all got far too much stuff.

iSage · 24/11/2025 18:15

I wouldn't say I 'hate' receiving any gift as at least someone has bothered to think of me,. Disappointing gifts would be - candles (don't use because of cats) - alcohol (don't drink) and hand/body creams/lotions (don't use).

luckylavender · 24/11/2025 14:03

Who on earth buys you tea towels?

My mum used to buy them for me for Christmas. It really upset me tbh. It sends a shit message “Nothing girly/indulgent/a treat for you - something soulless and useful tea towels or dishcloths are a good choice for you”

kurotora · 24/11/2025 18:23

I am pretty happy with most things! My aforementioned cat related tat - anything from a tea towel to an ornament to socks - all your cheap chocolate, I’m unoffended by a smelly gift set even though I’m not exactly jazzed with the dreaded Bayliss and Harding.

The gifts I do dislike a bit are hot sauce gift sets (I am really not into spicy food at all, and someone always wants to gift one), and cheap Works style tattoo books since I’m a tattoo artist - I’ve had about 6 of the same £5 book full of bad tattoo photos from the 90s!

For legitimately dread, it’s my SIL’s gift of weird but expensive makeup. She will hang over me anxiously while I open it, then stare at me closely for my reaction. It’s always in colours that I never wear eg neon coral or bright red lipstick, eye glitter, bright pink blush - I’m over 40, while I loved glitter when I was a teenager it doesn’t exactly form part of my makeup kit nowadays 😂

AmpleSwan · 24/11/2025 18:24

One of the things I feel the most guilty about disliking was a beautiful deep red rose bush an old family friend gave us for our wedding. It was in so many ways a perfect gift for us, we love gardening, are rose enthusiasts, and deep red is my favourite colour. But when I opened it my heart sank because I had just spent the last three years in the house gradually expanding the border and transitioning the colour scheme to soft pastels (including rehoming some lovely red plants which were there when we moved in).

Bleachedjeans · 24/11/2025 18:37

Most posters dislike the same stuff and I’m sure it’s almost universal. But manufacturers keep churning out the same crap and the same people keep buying them. It’s lazy, thoughtless gift buying. I bloody hate it.
My DH’s daughter (age 48) goes to Home Bargains and buys a shed load of cheap shite. I’d rather she just put 4 £1 coins in a Christmas card. It always gets binned.
