A christmas morning travel box

Enko · 24/11/2025 07:54

Ds (24) and his girlfriend are coming to us to celebrate the 24th in the evening (Danish Christmas) the idea is then to get up early on the 25th and drive the 3.5 hour trip to her parents home and celebrate British Christmas with them.

Usually we do stockings and big breakfast on the 25th however with them going off so early dh and I have decided to put together a christmas travel box for them and I am looking for ideas

So far we have
Bacon rolls (premade and heated up as they get ready to go)
Iced coffees
Peppermint sticks
Christmas cd (we are.checking if there is a cd in the car)
Mince pies
Silly christmas hat
Costa coffee voucher for stopping along the way
Perhaps a joke book
A cracker

Any other ideas. Im ok with some specific hia and hers as we want them to enjoy this and have a bit of a laugh with it as they drive.

I want them to feel loved and cared for and know we support their choice to split christmas like this

What about oodie type things for the car? Not the actual brand ones that are so expensive but a Christmas themed one would be lovely (although probably won’t fit in a travel box)

Don’t spoil their appetite for the meal at the other end. Honestly that looks a lot of food.

SeaAndStars · 24/11/2025 18:08

Such a fun and thoughtful idea OP.

How about a little light up Christmas tree for the dash of the car like taxi drivers have?

I don’t think bacon rolls and a mince pie is a lot of food that’ll spoil their appetite - if they’re up reasonably early for a 3-4 hour drive, it’s not outrageous and they can always choose not to eat lots of mince pies. Peppermint sticks are just a sucky sweet :-)

Are Costas open on Christmas day? I'm not sure I would bother about the Costas voucher.

The ones in service stations are open every day of the year. If they are likely to want to stop for coffee en route I think the voucher is a lovely idea.

Kibble19 · 24/11/2025 23:35

Lovely to see the competitive undereaters are alive and well. Could you imagine Christmas at their house? “Oh Alan, do you really need to eat that? We’re having turkey in six hours.”

You crack on, OP. Do the bacon rolls, a voucher for Costa (though it probably won’t be open on Christmas Day) and whatever else you fancy.

Shinyandnew1 · 24/11/2025 23:52

I would just do bacon rolls, hot coffee (deffo wouldn't want iced!) in a nice travel mug and a couple of bottles of fruit juice and some sweets for the journey.

Then do them a stocking with nice stuff in. I wouldn't bother with a Christmas CD or joke book. If they want Christmas songs, they can put on literally any radio station (or Spotify) and most cars don't even have a CD player now

labradorlovescoco · 25/11/2025 00:37

If they don’t have it already a Spotify or an audible subscription would be a nice

MudLark87 · 25/11/2025 05:55

You are so thoughtful!

Surely time for a Christmas Percy Pig?

And naybe a cheap christmassy blanket and maybe all in a christmas box/tin that can come out each year and be reminded of you.
Would definitely recommend setting oven to come on and spending the about 10 mins that frozen pastries take to cook. Plus a couple of mini bottles of tropicana orange juice.....As well as a bacon roll, it's Christmas!

christmasideers · 25/11/2025 06:06

I think I would just do the food/drink and a stocking to open when they get there.
I’m not being miserable but I know when I’ve got up early to travel I just want to get going and I wouldn’t faff about putting Christmas decorations/lights/air fresheners in my car. Unless one of you could sneak into the car the night before and do this? Then I’d go full on Christmas, tinsel, lights, seat covers the lot 😂

Mumdiva99 · 25/11/2025 06:15

If I was them and you got up early to make me a fresh bacon roll I would love you so much!! I know 6am feels early, but freshly cooked bacon would be such a treat. Those - with the right choice of sauce. A couple of nice Danish pastries. A freshly made hot coffee for him, and a couple of good cans for her. That would set me on my way. I love a good christmas head piece but some cars don't have the headroom!!

Mrsjohnsmith · 25/11/2025 06:23

How about a festive car air freshener? Yankee Candle do nice Christmassy scents that aren’t too overpowering.

caringcarer · 25/11/2025 06:35

They can stop at a service station and eat bacon rolls then.

LozzaCh0ps · 25/11/2025 06:39

This is really sweet OP!

TheSandgroper · 25/11/2025 06:56

If you can sew a bit, how about making a runner for the dashboard and some matching headrest covers from Christmas fabric? Eyeing up my car.

Do Northern hemisphere people decorate their car grill with tinsel or is that an Australian thing?

DisappointedD · 25/11/2025 06:59

sashh · 24/11/2025 08:31

I don't think they need to bacon butties. They will be having a huge meal at some point.

Maybe cereal bars instead that they can eat or leave.

Bloody hell, we have bacon butties at home and don’t travel anywhere 😂

We don’t eat dinner until 3pm. Why wouldn’t we have breakfast?

jomaIone · 25/11/2025 07:48

Someone always comes along on these threads making out breakfast is crazy when there is a Christmas dinner coming ... I have never understood it!

A bacon roll and a mince pie are easy to eat while driving surely?? It's a one handed job!! Very rarely messy enough to ruin an outfit!!!

What a lovely idea OP, this is the kind of thing my Mum would do as well and something I would do for my kids now!

I'd definitely do bacon rolls, mince pies, coffee, small bottles of fruit juice or non alcoholic bucks fizz, festive napkins. Then I would do a stocking with a few gifts for them both which the non driver can open, it'll be a fun thing to do while driving along to pass the time. Scented car fragrance, socks, a couple of crackers, hand lotion, etc for a bit of fun.

Some people are so miserable OP.

mamagogo1 · 25/11/2025 07:53

I wouldn’t include any sort of voucher because service station coffee shops do not always accept them plus it might not be Costa, money is safer. Flapjacks are always welcome with me plus bottles of water. No idea what peppermint sticks are but I can’t stand anything artificial minty, check on that because it’s not uncommon, the smell gets into everything around it. Bacon takes a minute to fry, I wouldn’t pre make

SpamIAm · 25/11/2025 07:57

Ah this is such a lovely idea! Only thing I might add is some pastries.

Personally I love the CD idea (assuming there’s a CD player). Obviously there’s Christmas songs on the radio, and we also have a Spotify subscription, but we still love cracking out the Christmas CDs every year.

Bloody hell, are you suggesting they drive one handed???? Very dangerous and could get pulled over if the police witness this

Hello19834 · 25/11/2025 08:48

All sounds fab
Lovely idea!

Letthemeatgateau · 25/11/2025 08:49

Lovely ideas OP.

Could you tell us more about Danish traditions at Christmas, I love the idea of Scandinavian Christmases. Not the point of the thread I know Grin

Picking up a bacon roll, taking a bite, and popping it down on your lap is hardly driving one-handed.
