A christmas morning travel box

Enko · 24/11/2025 07:54

Ds (24) and his girlfriend are coming to us to celebrate the 24th in the evening (Danish Christmas) the idea is then to get up early on the 25th and drive the 3.5 hour trip to her parents home and celebrate British Christmas with them.

Usually we do stockings and big breakfast on the 25th however with them going off so early dh and I have decided to put together a christmas travel box for them and I am looking for ideas

So far we have
Bacon rolls (premade and heated up as they get ready to go)
Iced coffees
Peppermint sticks
Christmas cd (we are.checking if there is a cd in the car)
Mince pies
Silly christmas hat
Costa coffee voucher for stopping along the way
Perhaps a joke book
A cracker

Any other ideas. Im ok with some specific hia and hers as we want them to enjoy this and have a bit of a laugh with it as they drive.

I want them to feel loved and cared for and know we support their choice to split christmas like this

You sound absolutely lovely!! Such a thoughtful thing to do.
I love a quiz so would be grateful for a small pack of trivia cards to while away the time. I recognise this might be niche! Pastries/biscuits sound good.

ConnieHeart · 24/11/2025 09:32

Bacon butties & a voucher sound good. They wouldn't need any more food

MiddlingMarch · 24/11/2025 09:34

Couple of bags of chocolate coins.

Christmas socks

Car decorations sound fun!

If someone planned to make me a bacon butty and someone else talked them out of it, words would be had.

OK I get it.

Bacon rolls are a necessary part of Xmas day.

Talipesmum · 24/11/2025 09:56

Fingerless gloves for driving? Love the idea of car decorations!
Little box of fancy Christmas nuts?

MrsClausMaybe · 24/11/2025 10:07

How about some dried fruit and nuts and bottles of water? And a pack of wet wipes for hands. Then if they don't eat them right away, they'll be fine in the glove box for another time.

This is in addition to the bacon butties, which sound lovely!

I don't think they need to bacon butties. They will be having a huge meal at some point.

Maybe cereal bars instead that they can eat or leave.

This gave me a giggle. Nothing says Merry Christmas, we love you more than a couple of cereal bars.

I would do the bacon butties, something sweet and Christmassy for the post salty bacon sweet fix and tinsel and a Christmas scented air freshener hangy thing for the car.

Pineapplewaves · 24/11/2025 10:08

Have you thought about getting up early and making them a nice breakfast before they go - my DP wouldn’t be wanting to eat a bacon roll while driving and I’d be worried about dripping bacon fat and tomato sauce down my best coat! The Costa coffee card is a nice idea but will there be any open on Christmas Day? DP and I would only stop once on a journey that long - toilet, petrol, takeaway coffee and go.

It’s a nice idea but maybe they just want to get in the car and go. I would put all of your efforts into the evening before to be honest.

JacknDiane · 24/11/2025 10:29

That's true. Presumably they will be wearing the clothes they want for Xmas day. They won't want bacon rolls dripping onto anything.

BloddersMum · 24/11/2025 10:29

Last week I saw a phone charging cable with Christmas lights along it. Think it was Amazon (presume other places also have them…). That would work as car decs if they connect their phone to the car or need to charge… Am thinking of getting one for dd.

PolskiFiat · 24/11/2025 11:00

You sound lovely OP

I’d also do food parcels ( we celebrate on the 24th too) but would probably ask the in laws if they could do lunch later, so everyone could have a bit of a lie in
/not get up at the crack of dawn on the 25th !!

AppropriateAdult · 24/11/2025 11:11

Ignore the Grinches, OP! Your plan sounds lovely. If you can’t spoil your kids with some mild
excess at Christmas, when can you? Team Bacon Butties here.

LastNovember · 24/11/2025 11:24

This sounds so lovely!

(also reminds me of the six hour journey we used to do between both lots of parents on Christmas Day. We were told not to wake anyone up as we left…)

Enko · 24/11/2025 11:51

Bacon butties are specifically requested by them.

While I 100% will get up I am not making breakfast at 6 am on christmas morning for them. We have a tradition we will upkeep for his 2 sisters who will be here for christmas day. Also ds would not want this.

I am 100% finding the christmas light charger love.that idea.

I do not believe they will travel in what they intend to wear for the day. But I may look to see if I can find huge big apron smocks for them to wear.

A Christmas scented sachet for the car e.g cinnamon, mulled wine, frankincense ...

I agree with this. However they want to leave then to arrive in time for all her usual christmas traditions. This is their first year celebrating together previous 3 years they have spent apart. This year they have moved in together so I want to work with what they wish. This year its for each of them to experience the others christmas.

Huge big apron smocks?? I've heard it all now 🤣

Pippatpip · 24/11/2025 12:18

This all sounds lovely. I think he hasn’t thought out the bacon butties though. You can’t eat them while driving smock or no smock. Can you keep them warm somehow so they eat them after an hour? Like a cool bag but the opposite?

Specialagentblond · 24/11/2025 12:27

Christmas car air freshener? A shared Christmas song playlist? A print out of Christmas in car games ie bingo so they can spot things eg blow up reindeer etc, or Christmas jokes the passenger can tell the driver to keep them going?

MrsWhites · 24/11/2025 12:33

I don’t have any suggestions other than those already given but I just wanted to say that this is such a lovely idea that it brought a tear to my eye. I hope your son and his girlfriend enjoy and appreciate your lovely effort.

ExquisiteDresses · 24/11/2025 12:36

I assumed they'd be stopping for breakfast after an hour or so as you can't eat a bacon butty or mince pie while driving but sweets for the driving time would be nice. Maybe as they will be presumably eating in the car Christmas napkins would be a good idea.

PragmaticIsh · 24/11/2025 12:44

I remember that first Christmas when DH and I had moved in together and had Christmas lunch at his parents, then a long drive and another Christmas lunch with my parents. It's actually kind of lovely doing that together for the first time!

A Christmas hat each would be fun.

Talipesmum · 24/11/2025 12:56

I really want a bacon butty now. Thanks everyone.

ps if it’s half wrapped in a napkin or foil it’s fine to eat while driving!

stealthninjamum · 24/11/2025 13:10

What a lovely idea op. I think something like a Christmas quiz would be nice, I’m sure you could download one.

Observed · 24/11/2025 15:02

How about a food flask to keep the bacon butties warm?
