He's asking for things like :
a real jet pack so he can fly through the sky
An invisibility cloak
An x box, phone and switch 🤣

So obviously pretty much everything on his list I've tried to dampen expectations of and now feel really bad. I'm sure he will be confused as to why Santa hasn't got him ANYTHING he has asked for!

Needmorelego · 23/11/2025 09:52

Tell him Santa can only get what's in the Smyths catalogue (cutting out the pages with Xboxes etc).

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/11/2025 09:54

He says Santa is magic! He is pretty clever so he would question why Santa can't make stuff in the workshop and with magic. I'm not quick enough to come back with reasons!
So he would definitely be confused why it was from a shop catalogue

If he keeps asking you could just reveal the truth to him to explain him why those presents aren't possible.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/11/2025 09:54

6 is so young to know the truth plus he would then tell his friends. I definitely don't want to reveal!

I think Santa needs to write him a letter to say while he could make those things, they’re not on the list of things he’s allowed to make as they’re not toys, so instead he sent his elves to spy on DS to figure out what things Santa can make that he might like and that’s what Santa has delivered.

If you want to trail this before, you can say you rang Santa/asked around at work and some of your friends asked for this stuff as a kid and that’s what Santa told them.

Bitzee · 23/11/2025 09:57

Obviously the jet pack is a none starter 🤣 But could you not get the switch? The original not switch 2 can be picked up second hand and isn’t mad expensive… Or if that’s a no for other reasons then maybe time to reframe what you’re telling him about Santa. It might be better if he thinks Santa just does the stocking bits because otherwise it is setting him up for disappointment if he gets nothing on his list and even worse if his best mate then gets a switch or whatever but Santa didn’t bring him one…

GagMeWithASpoon · 23/11/2025 09:57

For the first two you tell him he’s too young and Santa wouldn’t want him to get hurt.

For the last, you tell him to not be so greedy and pick one if that’s in your budget/agree with the choice.

Ibizaonmymind · 23/11/2025 09:58

This is why it makes sense to explain the big presents are from you/family.
We made lists for Santa and mum and dad. Stockings and some other bits were from Santa but the main present was from parents.

Ermm....ok. Lets think. His workshop burning down will be too traumatic 😂
Maybe the weather is too awful this year up at the North Pole and Santa has given the elves permission to get gifts from the shops instead.
(or you might have to tell him the truth....😬😬)

TheCurious0range · 23/11/2025 09:58

One of the reasons father Christmas only does the stockings here, that won't fit in a stocking worked a treat when ds wanted a goat

itsthetea · 23/11/2025 10:00

Santa is magic but magic is the one thing he can’t give away. Because if he gave it away there would be no more magic, no more presents for anyone ever again!

he has to use the magic carefully for what it was intended - making and delivering gifts to children.

and he is very careful about the gifts. He has a set list of gifts for each age group and mummy is pretty sure that a phone is on the list for 11+. Because he cares deeply for children and knows that some things can be dangerous for younger children. In the same way babies never get Lego from Santa. Some parents supplement santas gifts and so may get something that Santa doesn’t provide. But Santa won’t provide things he believes will harm children.

Needmorelego · 23/11/2025 09:52

This!

Also jet packs are only allowed to be sold to grown ups who’ve had special training, otherwise they’re too dangerous.

3 year old Gdd1 once asked for a real baby, boy or girl, she wasn’t fussy.
We had to explain that FC wasn’t allowed to bring babies or animals, because the people might not know how to look after them properly, Plus, it’d be too cold on the sleigh!
Gdd1 did get her wish very soon after the following Christmas, though. 🙂

CryMyEyesViolet · 23/11/2025 10:00

Or you “come clean” and say you have to send Santa money to make his presents because Santa isn’t rich / can’t magic things out of thin air (there are rules to magic too, it’s not infinite!) and you only have £X to send to Santa and unfortunately Santa has been in touch to say everything is out of budget and would he like anything, and you can help with what is in and out of budget.

But like PP said - is there no way you can stretch to a Switch? Because saying Santa only gets you one big thing is another get out if you could…

Eenameenadeeka · 23/11/2025 10:03

I remember telling mine that Santa knows if you're allowed or not, so he can't get you something he knows Mum and Dad said no to (when one of mine wanted him to bring a puppy haha)

Needspaceforlego · 23/11/2025 10:04

Santa wont bring things that aren't age appropate or are too dangerous. Btw nor can he bring live animals, they'd poop and pee on the other gifts in the sleigh.

A jet pack is too dangerous, as is an invisibily cloak its important to be seen!

Make up your own rules about electronics.

Countsounds · 23/11/2025 10:04

Santa knows if he’s been tested by being asked for magic things, to prove he exists. Santa also has to bring toys to children around world, so its important kids show they are appreciative my not asking for toi much. If santa provided everything then noone woukd be surprised on christmas day and that would spoil the magic.

gucciandscandal · 23/11/2025 10:04

No one has a jet pack or invisibility cloak for good reason, if Santa gave him these things he’d have to do them for everyone and then where would we be! Robbers walking into the Tower of London stealing the Crown Jewels in their cloaks and the sky full of people in jet packs, it’s dangerous!

Set the expectation for the rest, he’s too young for a phone so maybe ask Santa for something else?

But could you pick up a switch lite from Cex or somewhere? Black Friday deals for the original switch or an Xbox from somewhere like o2 or Vodafone who do pay monthly with no interest?

I would encourage him to put some things on there that aren’t electronics and say that Santa will need some smaller presents too.

user2848502016 · 23/11/2025 10:05

I have two non believers now but I used to say Santa only deals in toys, not magical items.
Also cannot bring live animals in his sack

I also had a one main present rule - Santa doesn’t like kids asking for too much. So you can veto the phone as he is too young, so that means choosing between the switch and the Xbox (you could look for used refurbished ones to save some money)

What I also wish I had done with my DC was say the parents send Santa the money to bring gifts, so if something is wildly out of budget you can just say that.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 23/11/2025 10:07

For DS the stocking was from Santa and the tree presents were from family. That made it all very straightforward right from the start - Santa presents had to fit in the stocking!

WiltedLettuce · 23/11/2025 10:07

I feel you, OP. My DC has asked for a teleportation device.

JamesWebbSpaceTelescope · 23/11/2025 10:08

He knows FC can’t get those things! He is testing you out about the whole FC story. You say he is smart, 6 is not uncommon for smart kids to realise the story doesn’t add up.

He is too young for all of those things, expect possibly the switch, so you could go down that line. FC knows how old he is and those aren’t suitable, but I expect you will have more probing questions coming your way.

Christmas can still be ‘magic’ and special if he has figured out it is a make believe game. If you try to convince him using tricks/ complicated arguments is when it starts straying into lying (for me, everyone is different). My smart DD figured it out early as she was a huge fan of ancient cultures and couldn’t figure out why the didn’t have FC (or equivalent) in ancient Egypt / Rome. That and different gods and religion and she just started asking questions.

Herbisaurous · 23/11/2025 10:10

And this is why in our house, father christmas only brings the stocking. DC know that other presents are from us. No fictional guy in red is taking the credit for my jet pack!

Catwoman8 · 23/11/2025 10:12

I can relate, mine put a real T-Rex last year, this year he has put a new house with a bigger garden 🤣 He is also 6.

100%, this is his way of figuring it out without risking not getting anything at all (because who knows what they think the consequence of asking would be!)
Mines 6 too, and he's definitely got some doubts. I was 5 myself, although I hadn't quite got the details of it down because I didn't think my mum knew 🤣

romdowa · 23/11/2025 10:13

Tell him that santa only brings age appropriate toys and that hes too young to have those things at the moment
