He's asking for things like :
a real jet pack so he can fly through the sky
An invisibility cloak
An x box, phone and switch 🤣

So obviously pretty much everything on his list I've tried to dampen expectations of and now feel really bad. I'm sure he will be confused as to why Santa hasn't got him ANYTHING he has asked for!

Honestly this boy...he's got DH to write all the stuff down from his head it's like a blooming A4 page!
But at least I can pick a few things off it

You could have some fun with a normal blanket and pretend he doesn’t exist each time he puts it on

Hotchocolateandsnowing · 23/11/2025 15:16

Santa doesn’t have all the time or money in the world to bring expensive presents. We always say Santa brings items they can build in the toy factory (so toys).

Parents have to buy the more expensive presents. I’m not giving all credit away to Santa.

plus it makes me feel sad thinking about kids who have tried to be good all year and then hardly get anything due to family circumstances, thinking they must have been bad.

Njx1990 · 23/11/2025 15:21

After the explanation of why he can't haven' them..

If it were me I would be looking for funny little gifts that "represent" each one.. e.g. an action figure with a jet pack, a comic about an invisible super hero, or a shiny cloak he can pretend in... Etc..

Then have a little note saying from Santa..

StrawberryJangle · 23/11/2025 15:23

Santa can only bring certain things. He doesn't do consoles because of the tricky electronics on the sleigh. Pets... Self explanatory.

I used try and get one big thing that I couldn't get at Christmas for birthday when money wasn't so stretched... I'd say Santa can't manage it for Christmas, but sometimes what can't arrive at Christmas can arrive on your birthday instead.

Then in lead up bday... What's on your bday list?

I don't envy you now mine have grown up.

Have a lovely Christmas!

mamagogo1 · 23/11/2025 15:24

Santa only brings modest gifts eg sweets, new toothbrush and a book, big presents come from parents and have a budget of x.

Latenightreader · 23/11/2025 15:27

My seven year old wrote a letter to Father Christmas on Friday. I wasn't allowed to see but she kept asking me how to spell words...

As with many others, he just does stockings in our house, but he can suggest things to adults.

APatternGrammar · 23/11/2025 15:28

I tell mine that Father Christmas only brings things that are good for them. A Switch to play whenever they want isn’t good for their brain at their age, so FC wouldn’t bring it. (If he says a Switch to play only sometimes, it sounds like he has that already.)
Father Christmas also knows what toys are really good and which look exciting in the adverts but aren’t really. So sometimes he doesn’t bring those ones either.

Kellogggs · 23/11/2025 15:29

Ibizaonmymind · 23/11/2025 09:58

This is why it makes sense to explain the big presents are from you/family.
We made lists for Santa and mum and dad. Stockings and some other bits were from Santa but the main present was from parents.

This

He remembers the last two years where he got his big present and a sack load of stuff.
I understand I created the monster but not sure how to dampen expectations now we went all out previously 🤦

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 23/11/2025 15:48

The jet pack backpack is cool!

I've seen the harry potter cloak...it would do but it's not what he is envisaging and he can be extremely particular!

Tell him Santa can only get what's in the Smyths catalogue (cutting out the pages with Xboxes etc).

My mum told me that Santa brought your presents, but your mum and dad had to pay for them.

SarahAndQuack · 23/11/2025 16:05

Most developmentally normal six-year-olds, even those that believe Santa is real, have cottoned on that Santa is in cahoots with mummy and daddy and there are limits to the 'magic'.

RedToothBrush · 23/11/2025 16:07

Santa is magic. Humans aren't. Santa can't make humans magic too.

Retrogamer · 23/11/2025 16:09

My DS asked santa for a giant mech robot that he can ride in.
I told him he's not old enough to drive so hes too young for a mech licence. Hes now asking for a kids robotics kit...which is more doable

MILLYmo0se · 23/11/2025 16:14

The rule in our house was Santa was not going to bring anything I wouldn't allow, so the jet back and cloak would be out for safety reasons, and phone and xbox wasn't allowed at 6

Hoppinggreen · 23/11/2025 16:17

We managed to never have to face this sort of thing by always saying that presents come from us/grandparents etc and Santa just puts small token gifts in the stockings they hang up

CheeseIsMyIdol · 23/11/2025 16:21

How does a six year old even know an Xbox exists, or think phones are even available for kids?

What about books, arts&crafts kits, etc? Sounds as though he has a good imagination.

”Santa thinks you have great creativity and wanted you to try this instead of video games. Santa doesn’t make Xbox or switch in his workshop.”

I'm guessing they interact with other children/the world.

MarvellousMonsters · 23/11/2025 16:25

This is why Santa fills our stockings with a few small gifts and everything wrapped under the tree are from parents/relatives/friends.

Its probably too late to change your Santa story now, so explain that you still have to pay for the stuff Santa brings.

FusionChefGeoff · 23/11/2025 16:27

We’ve actually got an invisibility cloak! It works on a green screen idea with an app. There’s cheaper ones on eBay

How would a 6YO NOT know an xbox exists… Like their best friend has an older brother who they’ve seen go on it whilst they’re there on playdates, maybe they have an older cousin, perhaps mum or dad is a gamer so it’s in the house, they’ve seen a game advert on TV or even if they’ve been inside a Curry’s because you wanted a new fridge and saw them there. I wouldn’t get one for a 6YO, the Switch is a much better console for younger ones IMO, and I honestly don’t think mine would want one but they obviously know what it is.

I always told mine that Santa will only ever bring things that parents approve of! You could possibly tell your DS that you haven’t given permission for an invisibility cloak because they’re against the law 🤣 and you don’t approve of a jet pack because they’re dangerous to birds and aeroplanes 🥴

Then maybe tell him you think he’s too young for an Xbox/phone/switch… he may not be very happy with you but Santa will be off the hook! 😁

6 is so young to know the truth plus he would then tell his friends. I definitely don't want to reveal!

I say 'santa makes the gifts but I have to pay him' lol. My 8 yo asked for a switch 2 and a PC for Christmas 😂 bare in mind a week ago he got a 300 pound handheld console for streaming Xbox games and steam lol.
