Hoping for a bit of inspiration. DS is getting some practical things for a trip in the new year and pretty much knows what they are. I don’t want to buy things for the sake of it, but I would like to get him a surprise or two, either one thing for up to £100 or a few smaller bits.

He’s not sporty at all, likes music, but I haven’t been able to pick up on any new vinyl he might like. I thought about aftershave, but so hard to know what he might like.

he does like clothes, but has a part-time job and has already treated himself to a few things recently and doesn’t really need much.

What are you buying your 17/18 year olds? Hoping for some inspiration! I’m normally pretty good on the surprise present front but I am stumped this year!

My DS is a little younger, nearly 17, and he might be a bit niche sorry because he and his mates are really into music and computer/gaming:

  • A Scarlet 2i2 box (he's in a metal band and they want to record music, tbh I'm not fully clear on what it does!)
  • 2x tickets to a concert next year
  • A book of D&D one shot campaigns
  • A cryptic killers murder mystery
  • A chilli challenge box of super hot sauces
  • Some band t-shirts
  • Pair of boots
  • Oddballs boxers and socks
  • New razor and blades
  • Chocolate, treats etc.

What kind of things does he like? I used ChatGPT to help with my niece, I put in a budget and her interests and it pulled some internet ideas together for me

Where do you get the one shot adventures from? I have a son a similar age who’s done it once or twice but isn’t sure how to get into it & I don’t really understand it!

Have looked around but don’t want to get the wrong thing.

It's a kickstarter campaign but they've started selling on amazon: One-Shot Wonders: Over 100 Adventures for Fantasy RPGs: Amazon.co.uk: Sam Bartlett, Beth Davies, Destiny Howell: 9781838218355: Books

If they're looking for a starter quest then this one is good: Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set: Heroes of the Borderlands, 7 cm x 29.2 cm x 22.4 cm : Amazon.co.uk: Toys & Games because it was designed specifically for those who are getting started. There's also some good youtube channels which talk through the game and how to begin (you mostly just need a couple of willing participants!)
We're quite a nerdy gaming family tbh so we do D&D, heroquest, Warhammer and a few other roleplaying games. If you have a Games Workshop store near you, they're really good at chatting through various games and they sometimes put on free events.

Thanks @NannyOgg1341 Some good ideas on there. He does like music but no upcoming tours that I’ve picked up on.

I think he’d actually be chuffed with a compact camera, he’s started using my ancient DLSR, but with phones being so good these days, the compact camera market doesn’t seem to be up to much these days (unless you spend ££££). I might do some more research.

He’s pretty well stocked on techy things like AirPods, speakers, phone etc too, nothing that really needs to be upgraded yet.
