Ds2 turns 6 at the beginning of December. He’s never really been into toys, he’d rather be playing football or drawing. So for his birthday he’s getting lots of football related presents, and he’s already got enough pens/pencils/crayons/felt tips to open his own stationary shop! But what the hell do we get him for Christmas!!?? I literally have no ideas whatsoever, so please, wise ones of mumsnet, give me some ideas !!

Marble run, super mario hover strike, table football, air toobz, Simon jump mat are a few ideas that may suit

Lemonsugarpancakes · 21/11/2025 20:35

Experiences? Tickets for the theatre, an attraction, something to expand his horizons?

Books, subscription to a magazine (Aquila or something similar?) or podcast (Who Smarted? is a good one)

Is he into Lego? Mine got int Lego around age 7 and that was Christmas and birthdays sorted for a good few years!

lookwhatyoumademedoo · 21/11/2025 20:37

Second the Lite Brite, you can get a really cool Pokémon one if he’s into that. Got one for DS last year (aged the same as your son more or less), huge hit, still played with relentlessly.

If he likes drawing (I accept this is random), would he like sewing? I’ve just taught my DS to do easy cross stitch, he does the most basic adult ones but you can get smaller kids ones that are quicker. He’s obsessed! Just mention it as your DS sounds a similar character, mine isn’t really into toys either.

Mine is also getting a rock tumbler, a kit to grow crystals, lots of board games, puzzles, and books.

PP’s idea of a marble run and Yoto are great, these were a big hit last year.

I also got him a Clementoni lab moving animals thing, which is good value for the money. It’s essentially a small battery-powered motor, with bits you attach to it, and you can make animal robots that walk/snap their teeth. DS made the animals a few times but now uses it to make his own inventions.

Does he have a a bike already?

How about magnetic tiles? Huge huge hit in our house, for two very different kids.

My DS is similar, although thankfully now developing an interest in Lego finally!
We got him a crayola light board tracing pad for his birthday and it’s probably his most loved gift, up there with his new yoto mini. He also loves his travel Spirograph which I got to test the waters so I think I might get him the full kit for Christmas 🤔

Stadium tour

Light box/tracing pad
blank comic strip books so can create his own comics
printing set

Mine got these last year and they absolutely loved it. They are 3 and 8 now and could both use it. They are screws and tools for miking structures/forts/creations of out cardboard. I have bought them some more screws and some add on bits this year as it keeps them occupied for a few hours at a time and there’s lots of cardboard around at Christmas.

I love drawing but also woodcutting and Lino printing and screen printing etc
Which I draw on before cutting and printing. here is an easy introduction to block printing, you might find screen printing kits for kids?
just kind of different methods to drawing with added extras (you can screen print in T-shirts too btw)

You could also get fabric markers etc - drawing on different surfaces is fun :)
(btw paint pens like posca can draw on metal and wood ans anything really etc)

Some things my 5.5 year old will be getting, plus some bits that were a hit for his birthday:

New bike
2 wheel microscooter
Hobbycraft den kit
Beyblades and battle stadium
Learning Resources Rocknoculars/magnet kit
Galt science kits
Metal detector
LED drawing board
Minecraft magnetic building blocks

Anything superhero or Pokémon themed seems popular with his friends in school

Apocketfilledwithposies · 22/11/2025 10:17

Joke book.
"Would you rather?" Silly scenarios book.

Mine was almost six last year. He liked .. vtech marble run, a raccoon board game where you have to grab the trash out of a bin (can't remember the name of it!), a harry potter football, Lego sets, etc. This year age six he's got very very into Minecraft.

frozendaisy · 22/11/2025 10:18

Has he got a bike?

lookwhatyoumademedoo · 22/11/2025 19:45

these are all great suggestions thankyou!!
@undercovermarsupial funnily enough, him and his nan sewed a Autumn wreath together which he enjoyed.
he does have a bike, both a balance and a pedal bike but he’s no interest in them. prefers his scooter 🤷🏻‍♀️
