Best shop bought beef wellington

We are thinking of doing beef wellington for Christmas dinner this year as it’s just the four of us. Anyone recommend any shop bought ones?

We could make our own…. But also two young kids and I’m working right up until Christmas Day so I feel like taking the easy option.

Alternatively any other bung in the oven type ideas for Christmas dinner.

We love a roast but I want to just be able to spend all day playing with the kids.

Have you tried Cook? I don't know about a beef Wellington but the mushroom Wellington was delicious.

We got the Tesco Festive food to order last year for ~£30 but it's £84 this year so we won't be getting that again! M&S are doing their one to order for something like £160. I hadn't thought of Cook though, I'll take a look now.

HollerWithTheRinsinSound · 10/11/2025 17:55

Cook - £30 serves 2, £90 serves 6.

Springbaby2023 · 10/11/2025 18:29

I looked at Cook earlier as we have a Cook store near us now! But wasn’t sure on quality. May give it a go!

Worth checking if your local butcher have them available to order for Christmas, ours does individual ones or a larger size that serves 6 people.

I just read a comparison piece the other day! Maybe The Guardian or The Independent - worth a Google.

mamagogo1 · 10/11/2025 18:44

I’ve had the Lidl ones which aren’t that expensive but still tasty, they have several different options in the frozen section of bung in the oven options. I’ve had their 3 bird roast in the past

Prelim · 10/11/2025 18:44

I was very disappointed with the Cook one. I didn’t rate the quality of the beef.

Cook does lovely (slightly expensive) food 😍

There’s a less expensive and smaller M & S beef Wellington for £60 for 950g. It’s in the frozen section.

@mamagogo1 I’ve been thinking of trying a 3 bird roast because I’ve never had one before. The one from Lidl is alright then? If so, I may get one just to have in the freezer over the holidays.

Northernladdette · 10/11/2025 20:18

M&S have a Tom Kerridge one, feeds six, £195.

Northernladdette · 10/11/2025 20:19

There’s a whole thread about it on here 🙂

Jellyellie · 10/11/2025 20:35

I wasn’t impressed with the Cook one either, the beef tasted really unpleasant

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 10/11/2025 20:46

Waitrose are stocking anew Charlie bigham bistro range, which includes a beef wellington for two for £30. I haven’t tried it yet but the review in the guardian was good. As was the review for the salmon wellington. Hope you find something you like!

Charles Bingham get good reviews but you need 2 for 4vof you and their priced at £29.95

Where in the country are you? Is Booths an option?

Genevieva · 11/11/2025 00:06

Have you thought about making it yourself? It’s not that difficult and much nicer.

Snippit · 11/11/2025 00:12

I ordered one last year on my Asda Xmas delivery shopping, it was lovely. I think it cost £40 and fed three adults, bearing in mind my husband is a piggy. I’m going to look for it again this year 🤗

Yes and usually would but working every day until Christmas Day itself and two young kids so don’t really want to spend time cooking when could just chuck something in the oven instead
