Ex DH and I separated on good terms and the first Christmas exchanged gifts in front of our 12yr old DDD.To show we were friends. He got me 2 lush bath bombs. Now I have life long Rheumatoid Arthritis and haven't been able to use a bath since I was a child. We'd been married for 14yrs. We'd lived in a place with a walk in shower due to my arthritis. I wasn't upset just baffled.

My mother has a bedroom filled with tat that she buys from charity shops and car boot sales

When a birthday or Christmas pops up,she just snatches the first thing that comes to hand (or she used to-im now nc with her,my golden child brothers got lovely, well thought out gifts)

Classics include
Katie price knock off perfume (half full)
Snowball shaped candles
Eye gel that was so old the product had long gone
A blanket with sleeves-with the previous owners dinner down the front in a salmon pink colour
Cheap, non branded make up (the sort that would bring you out in a rash)
Half a packet of peanuts
Wine/fake baileys (I dont drink)
Bath salts/bath bombs/cubes/pearls/oils-i didnt have a bath
Some dishwasher gadget that made it smell nice-i didnt have a dishwasher
Granny knickers 5 sizes too big
Moth eaten jumpers 2 sizes too small
Clothes she'd bought for herself but changed her mind (I was a size 14 and she was a size 30)
Slippers, when just went to pick them up,the sole fell off
A cracked fruit bowl
Soap that brought me out in a rash and didnt lather
A handbag that had two used san-pro in the pocket and a ripped lining
A bottle of half used shower gel
A lush knock off set of smellies (i dont like lush and these where awful)
A broken hair clip-i had short hair at the time
Limescale remover for the toilet
A vhs player that smoked when I plugged it in
A freeview player with a missing remote-you could only use it via the remote
Teddy bears-i dont like teddy bears
A sewing box where the lid fell off as soon as I went to use it-the hinges where so old, they'd rusted and snapped

(She used to buy the kids knock offs of whatever they where into-i'll never forget the 'ratty teddy' dd got instead of a tatty teddy and the 'rob the builder' scooter that snapped on the first go on it)

Ill never forget the year my brothers got mountain bikes that cost hundreds of pounds and I got a vanity case that was falling to bits and stank to high heaven

I'm not hard to buy for,nor am i greedy-a cross stitch kit or some earrings would have been lovely

Somewhere in her narcissistic brain, this was forgotten

Id rather she just hadn't bothered-it was all a waste of money

But God forbid you ever binned any of this-she'd find out (she'd pump the kids for information) and hold it against you forever if you didnt keep it

Dp once bought and wrapped up a tiny box

I shook it and asked if it was earrings and he smirked and said 'maybe' so i saved it till last

Fucking toothpicks

This is one of the saddest things i have read in a while.

Oven gloves and a tea towel. They were expensive John Lewis items. Quite boring patterns but good quality. Just such a dull choice, I think SIL was just lacking inspiration.

I think it’s better to receive something that is at least useful, than her than buying something whimsical from Not on the High Street or Etsy and totally missing the mark with your taste. Unless of course it’s your DH getting you the teatowels !!

My MIL bought me some very racy knickers from Paris once as a suprise.

We were hosting christmas for both sides of the family so I ended up opening them in front of my Dad. 😳

OMG- this reminds me of Christmas a child when the entire extended family would gather, aunts, uncles, great aunts etc.

We'd all sit, watch the gift being open the show the entire audience. 1 year, my nan said ' Look everyone, I got this massive vibrator!'

Silence through the crowd as she revealed a back massager.

TrickyD · 07/11/2025 12:35

I know I have mentioned this on MN before.
Sizeable, nicely wrapped present for me from DH under the tree.
It was a paper shredder. This would have been acceptable, if not very festive, had there had not been a paper shredder sitting next to my desk in the study, about 15 feet away.

Hmm, I agree but the tea towel was just an overpriced plain check one and the oven gloves similarly neutral. I never doubted best intent and love the SIL dearly. I think she was just reaching that point of Christmas shopping where she ran out of inspiration

A couple of years ago my mum bought be a book about pottery from the early 20th century. I have never collected pottery in any shape or form.

I’m 54. In the 70s and 80s when I was a kid, remember how older women (maybe my age now!) woukd give you strange practical womanly things? Folded rain bonnets (head scarves) in a tiny plastic case that looked like a handbag. Small notebooks with tiny slim pencils attached. Kitchen gadgets like the wire thing you slice a hard boiled egg in. Notelets. A crust set. Lily of the valley bath cubes. Knitting needles. Pin cushions. A set of floral coasters. It was kind of adorable to be thought of by these kind old ladies but I was sometimes a bit puzzled. Was I, a nine year old, supposed to proudly use the coasters? Was I supposed to put them carefully away until I got married? Does anyone else remember this sort of thing

Edited

My grandad used to call these "bottom drawer " presents - things that were stored in your bottom drawer until you started your own household.

Many notelets from my great aunt.
Books of really shite poetry from my great gran (who I loved dearly so never complained and never held it against her)
Really delicate spun glass swans from an aunt, sometimes interspersed with wade whimsies

onetrickrockingpony · 07/11/2025 13:13

I would enjoy the Red Leicester present, I’ve previously specifically asked for a wooden chopping board for Christmas, and I was looking up scented drawer liners this morning…. I’d throw the glass crab straight in the bin though….

NotanNHSnurseanymore · 07/11/2025 10:42

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat , that's lovely about the bottom drawer! I would have thought old fashioned in the 70s though (I'm having a wild stab at when you were born so could well be wrong!)

This was mid/late sixties. It was getting to be slightly old fashioned even then, but if you lived (as I did) somewhere not particularly urbanised and decidedly behind the times, it was still expected that you would marry straight from home (no living together), so would need everything to establish your marital home. And they started supplying you early!

Femalefootyfan · 07/11/2025 13:23

When I was about 14, I got gifted a book on freezing foods and my sister, aged 15, got a book on cooking meals for one. We both lived at home and by the time we both left home, neither of us had any idea what happened to the books

A friend bought me a set of tea towels about 15 years ago when I moved house. She died 7 years ago and I think of her every time I use one of those tea towels. I also think what a great gift it was - very useful and long-lasting.

BatsInHibernation · 07/11/2025 13:32

My own mother got me a hideous cheap fluffy onesie in two sizes too large from George at Asda and left the label on that said £16.
It was not a money issue and she would never in a million years have bought herself something like that. She knew it wasn't nice.
I had got her a gift bag of little beauties like a candle and holder from John Lewis, coffee cup and nice coffee, chocolates, and books.
She is a terrible gift giver and always looks so pleased with herself too. She once gave me a Baylis and Harding gift set that came in a plastic mock croc holdall. I have eczema and can't use cheap harsh shower gels.
If she made any effort whatsoever she would know I would like a plant, a book token, lush products etc.

A joint present of a tea towel rolled up inside a toilet roll tube from my ex MIL

Remember all the bath cubes from 70's & 80's, so many memories

Wallasey123 · 07/11/2025 13:57

all from GH: full cocktail making kit cos I’d once mentioned it would be cool to just be able to whip up an old fashioned and a foot spa cos I once said I’d love a foot rub once. oh and a calligraphy set cos I complemented the local pub’s sign font.

I mean, it’s actually really sweet and thoughtful but I do have to be careful now what I mention in passing.

PermanentTemporary · 07/11/2025 14:22

A teddy bear. A fairly low rent one with a tartan bow tie. I was 15 years old.

KindnessIsKey123 · 07/11/2025 16:39

A HUGE blender (when I was 22), a glass teapot (which was requested by someone else but MIL got mixed up and it became obvious during the unwrapping that it wasn’t for me, so I basically had to hand it over to them) a catering size container of hot chocolate, lots & lots of tea towels.

Wade whimsies! Is that what they are called? (I mentioned them upthread but had no idea they had an actual name!) They are the things I was astonished to see on sale for £10 each recently! (I’ve probably still got a box of them sitting in my parents’ loft - could make my fortune 🤣)

Things from charity shops do not stink to high heaven

Get over yourself

Very rude and yes they certainly can do!

These weren’t dreadful gifts but it was the context that struck me as slightly bizarre.

A few years ago at Christmas I was about 3 months pregnant and because it was my third I was expanding quite rapidly. My MIL asked me straight up what I like for Christmas and I told her I was outgrowing most of my clothes so a nice cosy jumper that fits would be much appreciated (she often buys me jumpers anyway). Anyway, I was really quite looking forward to getting my new jumper and on Christmas Day I opened it and it was a very slim fitting jumper in my normal size. She said it would be something for me to wear after I’d had the baby Confused (which was due in the summer!)

Another one that springs to mind was when my first baby was born and was a few weeks old by Christmas. I had asked my husband for a very specific book I wanted for Christmas and couldn’t wait to read it (it was the Bridget Jones one that came out many years after the others). It was the only thing I asked for but he decided not to buy it because he thought I wouldn’t have time to read it while looked after DS. Instead he bought me a book on identifying trees so I could take it on my walks with him Confused

What did you say to him!!!? I’d have been speechless at such behaviour!

ThisCyanMember · 07/11/2025 18:22

Ex boyfriends mum gifted me a half eaten tube of Pringles for me one Christmas!
