I’ve cried. I wasn’t sure where it was going. I am not sure it’s Christmas but it did make me cry.

Or the one with the penguins (my favourite ever JL Ad that always brings a tear to my eye).

Monty the Penguin is the best advert ever. I will die on this hill.

Whinge · 04/11/2025 09:44

I'm really surprised so many people are crying. I think John Lewis have become quite lazy over the years with their Christmas adverts, as they know people will watch, regardless of what they produce. For the last few years, the fan made videos seem to be better than the real advert.

LondonLady1980 · 04/11/2025 09:47

I found the advert emotional but thats only because I have two sons and I can’t bear the thought of them growing up and not being my babies anymore more… but it wasn’t remotely Christmassy at all. Huge thumbs down from me.

I’m off to go and watch the Monty the Penguin Ad on YouTube ❤️

CausalInference · 04/11/2025 09:47

It isn't very christmassy, although I do sort of get the advert. They could have done much better, the choice of music just didn't land either. I prefer it to the dog on the trampoline one though where they basically show it's the dad out there building their trampoline and not the father christmas magic. I was very thankful we'd only just had our first child when that came out and it isn't now when the eldest is only just still believing. They didn't really think that one through.

I can't see what the fuss is. It's the usual nonsense.....oh and why does the son get to go upstairs/dance with his dad whilst there, in the background, the mother and daughter are tidying up.

Yes, John Lewis likes to keep us women in our place - in the background, serving The Men

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 04/11/2025 09:52

I think it does look like a typical family Christmas, so in that sense it's Christmassy. It chimes with me more than animated characters or tables groaning with a festive feast to feed a huge extended family.

Well, I thought he'd died. Then I reminded myself it was a JL Christmas ad and thought surely not.

Ha ha OP me too! Was quite relieved!

DierdreDaphne · 04/11/2025 09:57

And I know it's -for some unfathomable reason - fashion, but if anyone has MH or other issues in the ad its clearly unshaven Dad. He looks like a derelict.

VillaDiodati · 04/11/2025 10:06

Oh no! I'm howling! It's a great ad love it.

dedee · 04/11/2025 10:43

Ootofmymind · 04/11/2025 06:55

It’s not a great advert, I wish they would go back to the Bear and the Hare or Snowmen. All too forced now.

Me too , I agree

Myblueclematis · 04/11/2025 10:48

Afraid I don't really like it at all but as I'm bound to see it millions of times in the run up to Christmas, it might grow on me.

Mansionscoldandgrey · 04/11/2025 10:57

It's a reminder that in our prime, Gen Xers were way cooler than today's youngsters 😎

BrieAndChilli · 04/11/2025 12:13

It is not a sparkly magical ad but it did make me cry. I think the issue is that it only really hits home for a specific audience so not very universal.

I have a teen son who has just left for Uni and 2 other teens at home. I have also just bought DD a record player for christmas - plus the song and clubbing was my era so has a touch of nostalgia for me.
Christmas hits differently once you have older teens and you have to work at finding things that connect you which the Ad did sum up. They could have had the whole family dancing around the tree at the end though.

FlakeorTwirl · 04/11/2025 12:25

I've just watched it and sobbed. It really hit home for me. I thought it was humble -also in today's cost of living crisis it goes to show you don't need to spend a lot - it's the thought.
To the person asking about vinyl, yes, I saw them on sale recently in the JL gift section.

TheChicDreamer · 04/11/2025 12:29

It’s a decent enough ad, as ads go, I mean, if it was just a run of the mill ad for the launch of their Rough Trade collab, it would be great.

But as the JL Big Christmas ad, it’s a massive let down. I want a bit of twinkle and twee nostalgia. Woodland creatures and all that jazz.

TheChicDreamer · 04/11/2025 12:31

Also, why does everyone want to be sobbing over a bloody Christmas ad?! It’s the one time of the year where we can try to escape the shitness and feel a little joy for a while.

FlakeorTwirl · 04/11/2025 12:45

I'm the kind of person who doesn't like greetings cards with sickly sweet verses. So this advert is right up my street!

DinoLil · 04/11/2025 13:33

@namehomesafe I've just watched this after reading your post. As a clubber in the 90s and a mum of adult boys, it made me cry a bit too!

Bah, a little happy cry is one of life's pleasures. Nobody's distraught about it, just enjoying a bit of nostalgia and/or recognition of the scene.

I didn't cry when I watched it, but I did get a lump in my throat seeing the awkward teenage boy and the dad reliving a moment of his 90s youth. All very recognisable to me. Nice feelings only here ☺️

Completely agree ❤️

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 04/11/2025 17:44

I think if you are the target audience- someone who danced in sweaty warehouse clubs at end of last century and is now the parent of an awkward teen - then it’s a bit emotional and lovely!

Serenesage · 04/11/2025 17:57

Awful. Not remotely Christmassy

Ramona75 · 04/11/2025 18:03

It's a great advert! Music really is a Time Machine, although it takes us all back to somewhere different. I think every dad can relate to that advert from getting in at 3am to getting up at 3am to help with bottle feeds! :-)

hiintrepidheroes · 04/11/2025 18:04

(Do JL even sell vinyl? 😬)

Yes, but only recently.

I liked it, but because I like the idea of meaningful gifts rather than hauls like other companies encourage.

EchoedSilence · 04/11/2025 18:06

Are people really sobbing and howling over a Christmas Ad?
