I’ve cried. I wasn’t sure where it was going. I am not sure it’s Christmas but it did make me cry.

I have never knowingly not cried at the John Lewis Christmas advert.

I thought it was really lovely. ☺️

Not very festive. I presume the son is meant to be neurodiverse in some way?

Well, I thought he'd died. Then I reminded myself it was a JL Christmas ad and thought surely not.

I've not seen the JL one yet but last night on STV I saw the M&S one with Dawn French, Sainsbury's and Argos.

I don't like any of the above to be honest, quite like the Lidl and Aldi ones usually but my favourite is the old JL one of the dog on the trampoline beating the kids to it on Christmas Day.

I hope they haven't done the usual thing with the accompanying music, a horrible warbling cover of a really nice song to go with the JL advert. 🙄

Mmmkaay · 04/11/2025 08:01

Nice house though 😁

Anxietybummer · 04/11/2025 08:02

I don’t think they were going for the merry Christmas vibe, perhaps more the meaning of Christmas. I get it, I cried 🥹

TheChicDreamer · 04/11/2025 08:07

I found it a bit depressing and over earnest if I’m being honest. The mum seems abrupt and pissed off, the kids sad. And I like that song, I was of that time, clubbing in Manchester etc, with young adult kids so I am their target market. But it left me feeling a little cold.

TheGrimSmile · 04/11/2025 08:13

I think if you've got awkward teens it hits harder. Also helps if you used to be raver 😄

TheGrimSmile · 04/11/2025 08:13

I really like it.

Georgiepud · 04/11/2025 08:19

The message is there, but not really Christmassey, especially the middle bit in the clubbing scene.
I'm not impressed.

CactusPat · 04/11/2025 08:22

Bit glum for my tastes. And I found the transition to the baby in the nightclub a bit weird and clunky. Feels like it could have easily just been more JOYOUS with a few tweaks.

(Do JL even sell vinyl? 😬)

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 04/11/2025 08:53

I cried, but it reminded me of clubbing in my 20s and how I'm no longer young and carefree (not sure it was meant to). Love the song as well. But it's all about how a song can take you back in time.

Still prefer their older ones (the dog, the snowman, the boy with the box etc).

I really liked the one they did years ago (not a Christmas one) with the woman through all the stages of her life, to the soundtrack of You're always a women.

Same here

It's like the skateboard one
Dad making it all about him
The DS looked really anxious, horrible

Agree. Joyous is a brilliant word to sum up what it’s missing at the heart. But I’m a sucker for dads and lads bonding and presents are my love language soooo I give it 6/10.

Gazelda · 04/11/2025 07:44

Loved it. Maybe it’s because I’ve got a teen at the moment. And the music is from my clubbing era too, so it hit the spot.

i booked my tesco Christmas delivery slot this morning, so I’m deep in festive spirit!

Same here. Booked Tesco then watched the JL ad. It got me mildly choked, which is more than most Christmas ads do.

Why?

EverardDeTroyes · 04/11/2025 09:06

They hit their zenith with the penguin ad for me, but yes, I shed a tear when his distant son turned into a smiling toddler. That will get most parents of teenagers I would have thought.

BlueGlassOfDoom · 04/11/2025 07:19

It reminds me of a trailer for/flashback in a Channel 5 crime drama - I kept expecting Jill Halfpenny to appear!

Brilliant!!!

WildFlowerBees · 04/11/2025 09:09

It’s awful, not festive just a boring advert. I can’t understand why people are fawning over it on social media and declaring themselves ‘a wreck’

They're going to be launching Rough Trade concessions in their stores and selling the vinyl from the ad to coincide- they wouldn't be allowed to advertise the hero product in the ad if they didn't sell it.

DarkEyedSailor · 04/11/2025 09:13

Oh that's really quite bad. About as festive as a plain brick.

Dontcallmescarface · 04/11/2025 09:17

I can't see what the fuss is. It's the usual nonsense.....oh and why does the son get to go upstairs/dance with his dad whilst there, in the background, the mother and daughter are tidying up.

CactusPat · 04/11/2025 09:21

Ah, thanks for the info Sweetpickle2, the ad actually makes a lot more sense now. (In a marketing sense; I still don’t think it’s festive.)

*cries in middle age that Rough Trade is now respectable and available in grown up department stores

AlohaRose · 04/11/2025 09:33

Well that was the most un-festive ad ever. What on earth was the message supposed to be?

CremeBruhlee · 04/11/2025 09:35

Yep that made me cry too ha ha

TidyDancer · 04/11/2025 09:37

It was awful. Felt like a trailer for a crime drama at one point. Big fail imo.
