Does anyone else still buy themselves a ‘little pictures’ Advent Calendar?

And isn’t remotely bothered about the ones with ‘stuff’?
I hope I’m not the only one…

I buy a picture one for the kids to share and I also buy one for my parents to open. Its a lovely tradition

Wookiefiend · 22/10/2025 13:37

When I was a child Mum brought the same one out every year. It was still exciting to open the door as part of the countdown. I still have it, a Nativity one from1970. It's possibly my only possession to which I have any real emotional attachment.

When I had my first "management" job, I found one that had a cracker joke in each window. Every morning my small team would down tools to open the window and tell the joke. I've never been able to find one since.

I went through a nostalgic phase and got my kids the little ones with a nativity scene with glitter on it like when I was a child in the 80s.
I loved each day opening the little windows and there would a picture behind it. We didn’t know about choc advent calendar’s until we were older so the nostalgia for the picture ones is everlasting!

And when i picked it up to open the door i remember the glitter going everywhere

Lookingtodate · 22/10/2025 13:43

I love the picture kind.
I got one from the RNLI shop put it in a safe place and keep finding it after Christmas :/

I'm not sure what a picture advent is? Does it have a tiny pic and frame inside each box that you then put in the house, or its simply a photo of something?

😨😥

I’m in my 60s and always get one. No chocolates etc. Just one with windows that reveal a little picture just like we had as children before everything became saturated with greed

Same here.

I have an Angela Harding one this year, it's beautiful.

TonTonMacoute · 22/10/2025 14:02

I do. Preferably the Angela Harding ones. I love the little pictures. The 'stuff' does nothing for me.

You’re not the only one. My mother and I buy each other a little picture advent calendar each year. I love it.

We do this too! I always feel like the chocolate ones aren’t very festive. I much prefer the picture ones, always have.

StokePotteries · 22/10/2025 14:29

They are the best advent calendars! I get them from the local church. Classic old fashioned ones with pictures of donkeys and shepherds and angels and stars and wise men then on 24th there's a double door crib picture. Takes me back to childhood. We always got a traditional one, even though my dad was an atheist!

dailyconniptions · 22/10/2025 14:31

I get advent calendar cards from Ebay for my parents and also for my children. I never buy the chocolate crap ones. All that awful plastic inside is just hideous.

😨😥

I'm not sure why the weird face emojis?
I grew up abroad and had chocolate advents only back then. I can't have children, so have never looked or shopped for them as an adult.

I thought by pictures it might have meant small photos of family members or something festive you remove from the advent each each day to display around the house- then put back in the advent after Christmas. As I wasn't sure- I asked and someone else kindly explained.

Sorry if my query was a problem?

chickensandbees · 22/10/2025 14:43

I'd like one of these, I'm also thinking of getting an advent candle this year as well.

Denim4ever · 22/10/2025 14:51

I like them, but the last one I bought from Bodleian Library had windows that were stupidly tricky to open and I was a bit disappointed

Blarn · 22/10/2025 14:59

I bought myself a beautiful German one a few years ago, I display that every year.

Baggyeyesbaggy · 22/10/2025 15:00

Yes and I choose mine carefully each year. I find it much more magical than any of the others.
My son also opens it with me, alongside a chocolate one for him. My husband has a coffee one.

I sometimes get a chocolate one too but my traditional calendar is my favourite.

Growing up, we had 1 calendar between the 3 of us, and would take it in turns to open a door. It was so magical each day, some of life's simple pleasures of sharing are the best. We also used to work out who would get the big door on the 24th and so take it in turns each year for that too!

Hotflushesandchilblains · 22/10/2025 15:04

So many great ideas here! I love the little picture calendars, have bought a few from various places over the last few years, but its getting harder to find them in person. Its such a special thing to open the doors - its one of my favourite parts of Christmas!

Justlovedogs · 22/10/2025 15:27

Thank you for all the suggestions on where to get one. I'm off to have a chat with Google and will probably send one to each of my sisters for a bit of nostalgia! 😊

Pekkala · 22/10/2025 15:31

I have several Angela Harding ones after they were recommended on here - they are beautiful.

Arlanymor · 22/10/2025 12:34

I like the Jacqui Lawson online ones.

They are gorgeous! My mother used to send me one every year before she died. Now I can't see the adverts for them without crying so I can't have one but they are absolutely worth every penny with the little animations and clever touches.

MrsBartlet · 22/10/2025 15:40

Yes we still have one every year. DC are in their mid/late twenties and this is what we had for them growing up. They took it in turns to open the doors and we played Christmas music and had a dance around the living room after they had opened the door! It has always felt much more Christmassy to me than opening a calendar with a chocolate sitting in plastic.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 22/10/2025 15:56

Granny always sends us one, the pictures are little angels, shepherds etc. no idea where she finds them!

John Lewis always has a good selection, and the town centre church usually has some, along with charity 🎄cards.

That was JL online - they might have them in the shops but I have yet to check.

If anyone likes Molly Brett or Margaret Tarrant style illustrations then you might like these calendars. We've had a picture calendar for our 4 year old DD every year, I don't think she realises yet that chocolate is an option. This year I'm hoping to get her a nativity one.

We do this too! I always feel like the chocolate ones aren’t very festive. I much prefer the picture ones, always have.

When I first (reluctantly) bought a chocolates one for dds (ages ago) I was shocked to find that there weren’t any little pictures as well! Sacrilege!

I still have the same one from when I was a child, it's probably over 50 years old. You don't need to buy them new each year, that's madness (unless you insist on sealed windows).
