Does anyone else still buy themselves a ‘little pictures’ Advent Calendar?

And isn’t remotely bothered about the ones with ‘stuff’?
I hope I’m not the only one…

I'd like one but haven't seen any for years! My Auntie used to send me one every year in the post when I was a child and I have fond memories of them. Any suggestions on who sells them?

Forgottenmyphone · 22/10/2025 11:17

You’re not the only one. My mother and I buy each other a little picture advent calendar each year. I love it.

Forgottenmyphone · 22/10/2025 11:18

@Justlovedogs Have a look at the Roger La Borde calendars on Amazon

JDM625 · 22/10/2025 11:19

I'm not sure what a picture advent is? Does it have a tiny pic and frame inside each box that you then put in the house, or its simply a photo of something?

Catpiece · 22/10/2025 11:20

I’m in my 60s and always get one. No chocolates etc. Just one with windows that reveal a little picture just like we had as children before everything became saturated with greed

khaa2091 · 22/10/2025 11:20

We were always banned from chocolate and were only allowed religious advent calendars.
My local bookshop sells Fairtrade chocolate advent calendars and has “little pictures” available by mail order (or in person if near Bucks)

John Lewis always has a good selection, and the town centre church usually has some, along with charity 🎄cards.

Yes I do! I love them. I get mine from The Art File.

ruethewhirl · 22/10/2025 11:22

I love them as they take me back to the excitement of waiting for Christmas as a child. I have one now which I do every year, even though I'm in my late 50s. 😄

ChangeOfNameAujourdhui · 22/10/2025 11:23

I buy one every year and I love them. Usually order them off of Amazon as they are hard to get in the shops. I get them for my adult kids too but they still like a chocolate one as well 🤦‍♀️😁

I can remember the anticipation as a child wondering what was behind the window. I also remember the disappointment I felt when my parents decided to start saving money by reusing the advent calendars - just not the same 😄

JenniferandJuniper · 22/10/2025 11:23

Yes I love them.

problembottom · 22/10/2025 11:23

I get a beautiful one from my local National Trust, they do a few different ones each year. Wouldn’t be Christmas without it.

muddyford · 22/10/2025 11:24

Yes. I have never had one with the treats in. Neither has my sister. There are some traditional ones on eBay.

Catpiece · 22/10/2025 11:24

They’re under Traditional Advent Calender on Amazon. About £5 x

purser25 · 22/10/2025 11:25

Never had treats just a picture calendar that was shared

mondaytosunday · 22/10/2025 11:26

Yes! I used to make them as a kid. I like those German ones that have snowy village scenes or houses with glitter. Got a great one last year of a street scene which was 75cm wide.
I did get my DD a Bonne Mammon one with little pots of jam inside once but the chocolate ones are boring and the beauty ones are just not worth it as I’d probably one like a couple things in it. Of course Lego ones were a hit when my kids were little.

SquigglePigs · 22/10/2025 11:26

My MIL always buys one for DD (now 6). She loves it!

Zov · 22/10/2025 11:26

WH Smith sell the traditional advent calendars too. I prefer them too @GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

.

NapoleonsToe · 22/10/2025 11:27

Yes, I much prefer a picture one. The excitement of that last door....

Pumpkinpuffin · 22/10/2025 11:29

Richard Sellmer advents calendars from Amazon. They are the reprinted German calendars we had in the 60's. I just bought mine for this year and I'm 65!

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/10/2025 11:30

Yes. WH Smith do them and possibly Oxfam. I usually get one from a localish church shop or Amazon.

I quite like one with the nativity story inside the door. But you do have to hunt those out.

PrimSec · 22/10/2025 11:37

My Dm has always sent our DC an old-fashioned German snowy glittery scene one, like a PP mentioned. Something like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Adventskalender-Rodelfreuden-Papier-Adventskalender-Anita-Rahlwe%C3%9F/dp/B07NRJ2JG5

Btw, did you know that a lot of them have yellow slightly translucent backgrounds to the open windows, so if you place them in front of a window, they have a lovely glow (often looks like the houses in the picture are lit up)!

We also often get them a Bonne Maman one and they've had a few chocolate/toy ones over the years, but although they are now in their teens they still love their picture ones and they're the ones that feels most Christmassy to them.

Ddakji · 22/10/2025 11:38

Yes, always, and the more glittery the better and sod the environment.

I got this year’s one in a gift shop in Hungerford that had loads of them, but more often I get them either from the Medici shop next to South Kensington tube, that has an entire room devoted to them (proper German ones), or from Holy Trinity Church at Sloane Square, which has a huge charity Christmas card shop with additional advent calendars.

So if you’re popping to London in the run up to Christmas, make a detour!
