Not necessarily just for Christmas , but his birthday is in a few days. And then I'll be in the same situation for Xmas in a few more weeks.

So please!

Ideas!

He likes DIY & machinery but has every tool under the sun x2. And storage boxes to keep them all, which sit empty.

He's Into boxing / gym. Would love to get him some boxing tickets but no idea where to start? Have wanted to do that for years!

We have 2 young children and his mum is ill so never any time to do stuff really.

Clothes - maybe. He's rubbish at buying any really.

Would love random / quirky gifts but I'm all out of ideas.

Doesn't drink, like food but doesn't need chocolate / sweets if you get my drift!

Google Boxing tickets UK.

Find suitable boxing tickets.

Buy boxing tickets.

Seriously, just have the conversation about not giving presents to each other!

Take one job off the table.

Studies have shown that Christmas presents are a net economic loss - in that the value the receiver feels they have is less than the cost of the amount given.

Just give cards or something.

Try it - the sky doesn't fall in, I promise.

Maybe Christmas presents are about a bit more than their economic value?

How many people in here don't really enjoy receiving presents? It won't be zero.

I don't want to not give a gift. He only has me that buys for him, it goes against every grain in my body to say "Happy birthday" and for him to have nothing to open... even if it's just a pair of socks!

Thank you, I don't know some of these words so will have a good google! Bird box / camera may be a good shout though. Thanks.

How easy does he find it to buy things for you? Socks are of course useful

Zanzara · 12/10/2025 12:52

It would be helpful to know your budget OP. 😊

topcat2014 · 12/10/2025 12:53

We used to buy gifts for each other, then (and I forget how this came up) mentioned we found it a source of stress at an already busy time of year, and agreed to both stop. Happy to be in an MN minority of 1..

Gymbunny2025 · 12/10/2025 13:00

‘Easy’ gym gifts are water bottle, sweat towel, hoodie, pants, socks etc especially if you know what he likes/needs already

I would definitely get him clothes if he’s not good at choosing his own

fitness watch? Jewellery? Winter coat? Sports bag?

tickets to boxing a great idea

Dolallytats · 12/10/2025 13:11

The boxing match tickets sound good. I get my husband, son and stepson tickets to a football match playing a few days after Christmas.
They love it.

Thanks.... issue I have is it doesn't tell you who is fighting until nearer the time. I just don't really know how people do this .... do you just book random tickets? Or do people wait until they know and just do things very short notice?

OP posts:
summerlovingvibes · 12/10/2025 14:13

@Zanzara I don't usually have one - if it's something he'd like I'd happily spend 250/350 etc, but equally if he'd like it and it's £50 then great!

Yeh maybe a coat is a good shout.
He wears shorts and T-shirt most of the year (even still today) but does occasionally realise he's being stupid and feels the cold and doesn't have a coat currently. So maybe a useful one! Thanks!

summerlovingvibes · 12/10/2025 14:17

Think I'll try the tickets. Will speak to his brothers GF as they both enjoy boxing so could go together.

Would prefer to buy more local (midlands) as when I type in UK Boxing matches it just comes up with a few at the O2 (but no names so I don't even know if this means there will be one "main match" and then a few others boxing before the main match? Absolutely no idea!) but will try to work out how to find local matches x

You could make him a voucher to say you'll buy boxing tickets when there's a fight on that he wants to see? Or maybe a voucher if they can usually be purchased through somewhere like ticket master? What about a cooking class for a cuisine he loves?

summerlovingvibes · 12/10/2025 14:55

@Poobs2022 I did that 2 years ago... and about 5/6 years ago and he never got round to booking. So I think it's a case of I'll have to definitely book them this time.

Tips I’ve picked up from MN over the years:

Replace something they love that is wearing out - I’ve tracked down things on eBay/vinted that aren’t made anymore. Or bought a better quality/brand but keeping in mind what it is he likes about something.

Solve a problem - longer charging cable with flexi head that doesn’t break, a flexible torch, a magnifying glass with grippy clips, reading glasses he keeps in his mobile phone, heated gillet - all responses to the grumbling I’ve listened to from him.

We’ve literally just had a conversation about this - it’s worse for me as his birthday is 17th dec plus our wedding anniversary 28th too and he says he doesn’t need anything , I’m same so we are going to put £200 each into our ‘tin’ where the passports etc are and have a weekend away or some special meals out next year with it

summerlovingvibes · 12/10/2025 15:10

@Deliveroo thanks, good tips. I'll have a think about what he likes / needs replacing. Maybe the lawn mover Grin hahaha
