Ssssh .... Looks about to check no one is listening in .... I will share my recipe for homemade mincemeat. My DH raves over this and reckons no one makes mincemeat like me. Little does he know! Take 1 jar of Robertson's mincemeat and hide it in a cupboard. When no one is around, put it in a mixing bowl, add a chopped apple and some orange zest. Pour in a good glug of whisky. Pour another glug of whisky in yourself. Stir and put back in the jar and make sure all printed labels have been removed.

DH reckons he doesn't really like much processed, shop bought food. He jolly well does, he eats lots of it I just don't tell him. It's not my fault if he assumes I've made it!

Ooh delicious! Will try that pie.

Mine is an old recipe of Jamie Oliver’s-

Sausage & chestnut stuffing- I’m not strict on quantities of anything. It always tastes fabulous no matter what.

Good quality sausage meat from the butchers
crumble some vac pac chestnuts in
grate a white onion into the mix
grate a cooking apple into the mix
snip some sage into the mix
crack and egg in
add a generous handful of breadcrumbs & mix it all together

I place it into a large foil tray, spritz with olive oil and bake for around an hour until it’s really crispy.

Christmas soup: Left over parsnips, half an onion, turkey stock, other bits of veg (leek and courugette are good), large cubebd spud if it's looking a bit thin, salt, pepper, smidge of curry powder, smidge of turmeric, smidge of easy garlic.

Makes a nice supper with bread and cheese and leftover cold meats.

Ooo love this thread already! I make this chocolate orange trifle most years and it always goes down a treat 😋

I always make a load of Nigella's cranberry and soy glazed sausages. Just cocktail sausages mixed with 60ml each of soy sauce and cranberry sauce (obviously), 125ml sweet chilli sauce, tbsp brown sugar, juice of 1 lime and 1 clementine. You have to cook them in a foil tray because they come out so amazingly sticky and delicious!

We have been known to eat them with a baked Camembert around Christmas....

Wow lots of good recipes already.

Will give that mincemeat hack a go, my husband and daughter love mince pies and they have asked for homemade but I can never be bothered with the faff of home made mincemeat (mostly because I don’t like it myself 😂).

Especially love the idea of a Christmas soup - why have I never thought of making soup with our leftovers! Will definitely do that this year.

I also make stuffing parcels (although I leave out the port) -

That sounds delicious- is it in the Nigella Xmas book?

I am vegetarian so sadly it will have to delight my family, & my enjoyment will be purely vicarious.

It is!
Maybe you could try with veggie sausages?

This gingerbread works well. I don't bother icing it or threading it into bunting. I just cut into shapes and put in a glass jar. Nice.

🤣I usually find the pre-made too sweet. I suppose if there's loads of whisky the sugar is forgotten 😂

Jamie Oliver's Christmas bombe is delicious and so easy! https://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/fruit/winter-pudding-bombe/

The hardest part is finding a panettone on Christmas eve!

I will have to find it but we use a HFW stuffing recipe based on celeriac and pears which goes down a storm.

I make a traybake called White Christmas which has white chocolate, cranberries nuts, glace cherries etc in it. It's lovely but very sickly

ivegotthisyeah · 02/10/2025 20:20

Nigel as Christmas Ricky road - always made in our house and for work and Christmas. Little tip put a dash of disararno ( can’t spell) in, dead easy and no baking
