Family board/card games - suggestions?

I'm looking for a family gift of a game that the six year old can join in with, that also won't bore mum to tears. Any suggestions?

So many threads like this so you could do a search…most say please and thank you though 😅

But since you don’t give your mums age, I’ll assume she’s not very elderly and suggest Carcassonne, without any expansion packs while the younger ones get used to it. Or Tacocat spelled backwards.

Uno is a good one to get kids started too or Dobble

Agree with above suggestions - or Qwirkle - colour and shape matching game. Dragomino is the kids version of Kingdomino, you could play the junior version for a year or so then move up to Kingdomino. We bought my nephew junior settlers of catan and junior ticket to ride - both playable without too much boredom as adults, but from 8/9 he could play the full versions.

Cranium. Brilliant.

Some of the orchard toys games are surprisingly fun and stimulating!
We play the shopping list game A LOT in our house and we all enjoy it

Taco cat goats cheese pizza.

We love "costume party assassins" and have even made our own travel size version.

GreenCorduroy · 17/09/2025 09:57

We loved Ticket to Ride Junior, great for all ages.

We bought outsmarted last year and our kids (8 and 6) love it. They have settings for children so the questions are bespoke for their age.

The sock game

MCF86 · 18/09/2025 06:06

Thank you, plenty to look in to :)

Taco cat goats cheese pizza.

Dh declared he was injured after this game, we didn't think about how hard our adult children could slap the cards Grin brilliant fun though. I personally think he injured himself mixing up what action he should be doing for the action cards in the frenzy to be first.

OP If only one child you can pair them with an adult, we used to do teams for games, one adult with a child. It feels great and conspiratorial for the child.

I second Uno, Dobble, Settlers of Catan junior.

This is my suggestion. Hilarious fun. And my child ALWAYS beats me.

We got injured too. In fact, more than one person cried and 3 had cuts!

neverstopthelaundry · 18/09/2025 21:49

@CountryQueen maybe it should come with a warning, enthusiasm may result in injury 😁

YorkshireWelsh · 18/09/2025 23:56

Dobble - so many themes to choose from!
Sushi Go - got this recently, brilliant and was on sale for ~£5-6 on Amazon
Monopoly Deal - bit tricker but DS started playing it at 5, it’s the grandparents we have to remind how to play!
Uno
The Muddles - the silly made up animals make everyone laugh
Kaboodle

Zapx · 19/09/2025 00:37

Herd mentality. Stick to the easier cards and your 6yo should be fine

shinebright3 · 19/09/2025 11:16

Game of life. Put it’s only upto 4 players however it is great for all ages

SeaBaseAlpha · 20/09/2025 14:09

Rhino Hero is quite fun

How into games is your 6year old? I have 2 ds, 8 and 6 and we play games a lot.
Favourites of my 6 year old are exploding kittens - doesn't really require reading ability once he can recognise the pictures - ds2 has been playing since he was 4
Bag of dungeon - dungeon crawler game, you have to kill the dragon. Strategic but you can work as a team and play cooperatively
Taco cat goat cheese pizza - seen this mentioned above, quick and chaotic snap type game
Kingdomino- requires some strategy but doesn't take too long to play.
Blockus
Minecraft heroes of the village - you don't have to be into Minecraft to play. It's a cooperative game where you build defences to stop the mobs reaching the village. Fun to play without really knowing anything about Minecraft
Power hungry pets - bit of a silly one again but quite strategic.
Some of these require quote a bit of strategy but me and DH also enjoy playing. Shopping list we haven't played for a while, I don't think it would be worth buying at 6 as he will be too old for it soon, if he isn't already
