Thread 3 - The one with the unhinged crab 🦀

1000 replies

Reastie · 14/09/2025 19:30

I certainly don't want an unhinged crab for Christmas Grin

This post is a work in process and if you have any links you’d like to share or would be good to add then please do let me know. The general consensus for the thread is to share any bargainous links, ideas and/or discount codes or information. No affiliate links (is that the right word?) And any referral links to the separate thread linked below. This is a warm, friendly, kind and cosy corner of mn filled with Christmas cookies and hot chocolate - let’s keep it that way!

If you have any referral links then please post on this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/5212180-bargain-referrals-thread-7 and share around the joy/referral perks.

@CarrotVan my flag obsessed 8 year old was kept busy with this colouring flag map last year. Huge hit.

It's been an intense phase so I have a few recommendations 🤣 he likes to get us to quiz him by describing a flag from the book and he has to identify it, or using the flags from the game as flash cards rapid fire.
When we got the board game it also had the Flag bingo included so check before buying both as you can get them separately on Amazon!

I’ve been a sheep and last night at 11.45 I placed a CLARINS order- cant remember who originally posted but thank you!

Which brand of magnet tiles do people recommend? Magnatiles and connectix are very expensive. Desire deluxe are cheaper on Amazon at the moment but don’t want to get ones which will fall apart or break.

We have the desire deluxe ones and they are great, we've had them ages and none of them have broken despite being dropped or the built product collapsing

CarrotVan · 15/09/2025 13:33

@GiddyDog it has been very intense for several months. Driving anywhere usually involves quizzing and cries of ‘I NEED a geography question’. And he’s become an ace at Geogrid and Geoguessr

GameOfJones · 15/09/2025 13:33

@onlyatchristmastime I am paranoid about marbles too and my youngest is 6 but I still won't risk it.

My DDs have a set of giant marbles from House of Marbles which they love.....and they're definitely too big to fit into mouths.

ThaliaFailure · 15/09/2025 13:54

Might anyone have any suggestions for button-operated toys which have lights but no sounds (or at least the option for sounds to be off?)?

DS2 has developmental delay and poor fine motor skills due to his medical condition. He can smack big buttons and switches and loves making them work, but I would like toys I can take out in public for him without tinny music blaring!

Thank you for any suggestions. I love this thread 😊

Any ideas for very, very bright geography/flag obsessed nearly 9yo?

Do you have the where in the world game?

deeplybaffled · 15/09/2025 14:10

Yes I just did the same. Some good 1/2 price gross laboratory bath stuff which is great for kids who like making ‘potions’ in the bath.

Would you mind sharing the link, as I am really struggling with the boots website… is it just me that finds it impossible to navigate?

redjoker · 15/09/2025 14:26

This one is so pretty!

Heated throw

Some great items in the TU Sainsbury’s clothes sale. Just managed to get oldest DS pack of 3 boxers (men’s) middle DS pack of 3 too and my DD 5 pack of knickers and 7 pack of days of the week socks for £10.95. Used a 10% off code as it was my first order (you just put your email in on the website and it sends you a code). So managed to get it all for £9.85 👏

IlovePond · 15/09/2025 14:31

@PudgeJudy copied from the previous thread:

Do they have/can they use mobile phones/or tablets? If so, they might enjoy an Audible gift subscription, (depending on whether their eyesight is good enough to access the menu):

https://help.audible.co.uk/s/article/gift-a-membership?language=en_GB

I think the previous suggestions of fingerless gloves/wristwarmers -maybe also fluffy bed socks or a woolly wrap to wear in bed/sitting in a chair are good ideas.
Monthly flower deliveries might be nice, (assuming the care home staff would be able to deliver them to the right rooms/be ok with doing so).

Available from here:

https://www.freddiesflowers.com/brighten-your-home-vase?
They also might enjoy a nice throw/small blanket for use on the bed/chair - as long as this wouldn’t get lost in the communal laundry system.

I was in Aldi earlier and they have their Sweet Angel shower gel in, their Lush Snow Fairy dupe, for £1.99. Always sells out incredibly quickly every year (I couldn't get any last year), but the shelf seemed fairly well stocked when I was in there today - great stocking filler for teens.

Loving the return of these threads. Mystery guides are a brilliant idea!

Any recommendations for decent quality/ideally also bargainous popcorn and/or candy floss makers gratefully received. Am also on the lookout for a marble run for DS who will be 4 although part of me is still wondering can he be trusted not to put them in his mouthHmm

I’ve going to get this one for my
DS as it’s not too big. I’ve previously seen it reduced to £20

£10 off a £30 spend at Sass and Belle, with code TENNER
ends tomorrow at 10am - but they have some nice homeward stuff, including cute noodle bowls with chopsticks, and some kids stuff too

Arregaithel · 15/09/2025 15:44

@Realfastfoodie

We have connetix, which are lovely (we have the pastel ones, beautiful colours), good strong magnets, and hold up very well – but there's no denying that they're pricey. PlayFaire seem to have some discounts on connetix at the moment, and connetix themselves do usually have a sale about 20% off at some point between now and Christmas.

@FortnumsWeddingBreakfastTeaPlease brilliant that made me chuckle

my unhinged crab is on its way for DS15
