I certainly don't want an unhinged crab for Christmas Grin

This post is a work in process and if you have any links you’d like to share or would be good to add then please do let me know. The general consensus for the thread is to share any bargainous links, ideas and/or discount codes or information. No affiliate links (is that the right word?) And any referral links to the separate thread linked below. This is a warm, friendly, kind and cosy corner of mn filled with Christmas cookies and hot chocolate - let’s keep it that way!

If you have any referral links then please post on this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/5212180-bargain-referrals-thread-7 and share around the joy/referral perks.

Any ideas for a 15 year old who has started getting into cooking (but not baking)?

Some ideas…

we’ve had this Sandwich press for more than 5 years, dh is always making wraps in it

A spicery Legend kit - these usually have a decent discount at some point in the year

The Typo Noodle bowls

A nice knife? recipe box subscription? Local class eg pasta/bread making or foraging?

Jamie Oliver book eg 5 ingredients (he’s dyslexic and makes sure his books are simple and visual)

Actually, @Onemoret1me, that throw doesn't seem to be furry like mine, which I bought a few years ago. I think they've changed, as their furry ones are really expensive now. I'm sure there are cheaper brands that are perfectly good.

sorry to ask but is the problem with swallowing or choking on the marbles? Because I always feel the larger £2 sized marbles are more dangerous as a choking hazard than the smaller ones. Or can you die from swallowing them? I used to let my younger children play with the marbles and added small beads into the mix too. Until the 5 year old got a bead stuck up his nose.. 😬

With respect to my earlier post, the child I was referring too, swallowed a marble which got stuck in her windpipe and it couldn’t be removed thus choked her to death.
edit…As far as I am concerned, marbles should be banned.

What about a Spicery Legend kit? It makes it quite simple to produce a very good curry / taco or whatever. The curry one is my most used one

To answer @trivi’s question, a marble stuck in the trachea (ie, choking) will cause death by hypoxia. A marble ‘swallowed’ into the oesophagus will likely just pass through the digestive tract but still not advisable!

Yeknom · 15/09/2025 21:12

I'm glad people have recommended Mapominoes - I bought it 2 weeks age for DS off Vinted for £1 - doesn't look played with! Lots of people are selling it so I wondered if it'd be any good - for interested people after the game don't forget to check Vinted/ebay - loads of copies for sale!

MincemeatMaestro · 15/09/2025 21:16

Another geography/flag recommendation: the Lonely Planet Book of Flags. We came across it in our local library and it's spent a good chunk of its life at our house with my son (now 11)😁 There might be other possibilities in the Lonely Planet for Kids series; we've borrowed a lot of them over the years. Also seconding Mapominoes, and DS will happily read atlases for fun: a world atlas, a road atlas, UK and European rail atlases...

Can anyone recommend a decent smartwatch around the £100 mark? I was hoping to surprise DP with a Garmin but they are quite £££.

weareallqueens · 15/09/2025 21:58

Garmin have very good sales and tend to come down quite a bit around Black Friday so you may get a bargain.

Aw that’s so awful… so those vtech ones are just as dangerous, if not more so. Supervision needed then. And watch younger siblings. Any alternatives gifts to marble runs for the construction crazy boys?

Givealittlebit · 15/09/2025 22:30

I only had a 10% off sparks voucher but thankfully it worked with the icons beauty box! One present ticked off ✅

I had to buy the witch 🤣

Blessedbethefruitz · 15/09/2025 22:49

@trivi My ds6 and dd3 like gravitrax, similar concept to marble run but more grown up. The balls are smaller than a marble (so hopefully not chokable? not sure though) , and while solid metal, don't contain magnets (so if 2 were eaten, wouldnt rip apart the insides). My dd3 isn't a mouther/chewer but ds6 is, we only just got this over the summer for this reason.

Edit for PSA - those little magnetic blocks, there are lots of minecraft ones around atm, contain 4x tiny magnets in each side. The sides can come off really easily, so if you have a chewer, they're an absolute no. Those 2mm magnets could be swallowed like so easily and really make some holes in their digestive tracts.

TryingAgainAgainAgain · 15/09/2025 20:05

Yes, love them. They've generally got a timer you can set for 1 or more hours so it won't be on all night. I like the Dreamland ones and just seen they're on offer:

www.dreamlanduk.co.uk/products/relaxwell-luxury-heated-throw-dusky-pink

Thanks for this. I got a faux fur one for 49.99 which is the cheapest I've seen them.

Snugglemonkey · 15/09/2025 23:32

I am not sure whether to thank you 😂

My son will love the lab thing, my daughter will love her unicorn sparkly stuff, but things kept jumping in my basket and it somehow cost nearly £200!

I’m the marble run poster and having watched various tiktoks of different alternatives, I’m leaning towards Connetix ball run. Not very bargainous unfortunately but my DS will love it! I will be keeping an eye on Black Friday for it.

DD5 announced today that Santa is bringing a piano so if anyone has a discount or referral code for a really big house please let me know Shock

Melissa and Doug schoolyard tumble for 12 months plus down to £10.99. It doesn’t show the original price on it but when I bought it a couple of years ago I paid £38

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09RZV82YC/ref=sw_img_1?smid=AQ48P6MXO5STO&psc=1&tag=bb4bmgemma-21

thank you!! My 18 month old has this and loves it, I was just thinking the other day it would be a fab gift for my niece. Such a good bargain, I paid more than £30 for our one. Very well used toy in my house.

Snugglemonkey · 15/09/2025 23:56

🤣🤣🤣 @onlyatchristmastime

Wellwhoknewthat · 16/09/2025 05:59

@onlyatchristmastime sorry can't help with the house but this might do?

PinballWizened · 16/09/2025 06:54

@onlyatchristmastime lots of people give pianos away so you can get one for the cost of getting it professionally retuned.
Ask Santa to bring you an extension to house it 👍
