Thread 3 - The one with the unhinged crab 🦀

1000 replies

Reastie · 14/09/2025 19:30

I certainly don't want an unhinged crab for Christmas Grin

This post is a work in process and if you have any links you’d like to share or would be good to add then please do let me know. The general consensus for the thread is to share any bargainous links, ideas and/or discount codes or information. No affiliate links (is that the right word?) And any referral links to the separate thread linked below. This is a warm, friendly, kind and cosy corner of mn filled with Christmas cookies and hot chocolate - let’s keep it that way!

If you have any referral links then please post on this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/5212180-bargain-referrals-thread-7 and share around the joy/referral perks.

Anyone got any good ideas for how to wrap tickets as a present for a 8 year old?

We’ve got him tickets to the Gladiators live tour (he’s going to lose his mind), but not sure how to present them. Think I’ve seen scratchcard options, but looking for what has gone down well.

I’ve done in a balloon to pop
tied to a helium balloon that comes out of a box
inside a cd - so you could do inside a toy of the gladiators if that exists!

Thanks @reastieand Thanks everyone for the recommendations…

So far I’ve bought a science experiment kit, a potions kit, some whistlefish cards with a nice referral code discount. I’m managing to resist buying things I don’t need so far 👍

I wondered if anyone had any recommendatiojs (ideally bargainous) for a game or similar for people who like escape rooms?

What about these?

I would have loved the Riverford offer but no deliveries to Edinburgh 😢

No deliveries to Inverness either. I was just wondering if they delivered to Edinburgh as I have family there. It’s a shame because that looks like a good deal.

Oh and printed scratch cards you can get on etsy

@Annie1290 when I bought my nephews tickets to a football match I popped them inside a team mug.

Worth checking your My John Lewis vouchers. I had £10 off a £60 beauty and fragrance spend, they are price matching Boots for Chanel so 50ml of Bleu for £57

Hi, can someone recommend a nice chocolate box for my DH?
I've given him, Godiva, Cadbury Milk tray, Lilly O'Brien, Green and Blacks, Charbonnel et walker, Hotel Chocolat, Lindt and Love Cocoa over the years. Budget up to £30-40.

This company do handmade chocolates using local ingredients. I have used them for years for gifts and for myself when I want a fancy treat. Highly recommend, they’re delicious and worth every penny!

@IceCreamplz depending on how squeamish your DH is, might he be interested in the Edible Museum?

Thank you to the Riverford poster - I activated the cashback with my bank and ordered a recipe box. And it looks like it’s coming for free! 🎉 Not sure how I had credit on my account. I used to be a customer many moons ago and it wouldn’t let me use the free cookbook code, but maybe I got some free credit for returning? Who knows. I am now quite excited about my box arriving next week and adding a new meal to my repertoire 🏖️

Fetcha chocolates is a small brand that provided chocolates for the Oscars goodie bags last year, and was recently visited by The King.
I genuinely highly recommend https://fetchachocolates.com/pages/grown-up-goodies

Grown-up goodies

Me again … just to say that my bank is showing the Riverford purchase as the price I was expecting to pay in pending 🤔 So its a bit confusing, I’ll wait and see what happens and report back. Riverford say free, bank saying £15 pending to be paid to Riverford.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 19/09/2025 17:21

If your kids/teens wear Nike or Adidas socks next sake has 6pk’s for £10 and under.

cherrybobbins · 19/09/2025 17:41

@Annie1290 what about a cameo video?

GRCP · 19/09/2025 17:43

Thirtysomething123 · 17/09/2025 20:22

My DD wants two things both of which I know nothing about!

a white fox hoodie: I’ve looked them up and they are so expensive! Are they worth it?! Do they give out codes or anything?

skincare: shes ten and I never use anything on my skin as I’m allergic to so much so I don’t know where to start! What is good for this age?

CeraVe is a good skincare brand - my 9 year old DD uses the face wash. There are cheaper dupes in places like Savers.

White Fox are expensive but try Vinted for good quality pre loved?

Thank you for this. My DNiece is studying film / screenwriting so I've got her a box of the awards chocolates for her birthday (and maybe a few bits for myself too😁)

Yalz · 19/09/2025 17:46

nothingtoseehereatall · 19/09/2025 13:48

@Yalz Well obviously people with allergies have to check labels for eg gluten etc. But sorbitol is an extremely common ingredient, Hotel Chocolat, Lindt etc all use it (obviously dependent on actual product). Why would you expect a high end box to be entirely gluten free though?

Hotel Chocolat and Lindt are not high-end.

In my opinion chocolates which are £1.67 each should only contain high quality ingredients, especially when the website says ‘Fresh, natural, ingredients are the only principles we believe in’ and mentions fresh and natural again lower down the same screen.

Even the link preview which MN attached to your post says “made with the finest natural and local ingredients”.

True, it doesn’t say only those ingredients.

(edit: Hotel Chocolat, while not high-end in my opinion, says it has no artificial ingredients. Hill Street lists 4 of its ingredients by their E numbers)

People who might be buying the chocolates as presents for those who are gluten-free might not realise that barley and malted barley are not. I didn’t, until it was pointed out to me.

I’m definitely not saying not to buy Hill Street products, just to be aware of their ingredients if you do.

Lobsterteapot · 19/09/2025 17:46

@Annie1290 Gladiators tickets sound immense! Were they on a site somewhere? We’ve never managed to get into the recording

Localres · 19/09/2025 17:56

Fair enough @Yalz if you want to avoid something - but at least they are very transparent on their website about what ingredients are in their chocolates. I just looked at a few other high end ones and they don’t have them listed like this.

btw I don’t know what your definition of natural is, but sorbitol is found in apples. Like many things it can also be manufactured but it is a “natural” compound, and it’s only bad for you in large quantities. A minuscule amount used to stabilise a ganache is hardly that.

Restlessinthenorth · 19/09/2025 18:10

Unbelievable deal on the boots no7 website. The build your own skincare bundles are usually £55. There is £20 off a £50 spend brining them down to £35. The future renew day cream I chose is £37 on its own! Total value of my bag was around £150 and I paid £35. Includec day cream, night cream, serum and cleanser. Plus a free face mask and a presentation pouch if you want to give as a Xmas gift. you are a new customer my code will knock you a £10 off on top of this. Total steal!

I've popped my referral code on the referral thread if anyone wants to take advantage!

I can't find anything at all and have VIP early access to the sale. There are some infant Nike ones for £7.

Chipping in to say I used two excellent recommendations from the ‘small business supporters’ Christmas thread!

One that does candles and wax melts at v. Cheap prices and one that does metal animals (with names) on Driftwood. Both really good products and great customer service. Really happy.

@Acatnamedpinto are you able to link the thread please? X

AlohaRose · 19/09/2025 18:25

Another one who can't find anything matching the Nike/Adidas socks referred to above.

Yalz · 19/09/2025 18:26

@Localres , I’d agree that, in some sense, everything we eat is natural, that is it’s made from things which were once found in nature.

Also, everything is made from chemicals. 😉

I don’t think I’d agree that they are ‘very transparent’ about their ingredients. This luxury chocolate box says “There are no additives or preservatives added to our chocolates.” You have to click on the “ingredients” link to see where the ingredients for each chocolate are listed, and it’s not clear which chocolates each box contains - there’s a long list. Only one of the first 24 chocolates gives an E number in its list, but each of the next 4 does. I don’t think that’s particularly transparent.
(Further down that page we see that most of the gelato flavours contain E410, E412, E471and E473. The first two are guar and locust bean gum, ‘natural’, why not write that?)

If DH looks through my browsing history I’ll probably end up with a box for Christmas!

Perhaps by mentioning them so often this thread will increase their sales: may they have many very happy customers in that case.
