Poncetastic Christmas 2025

Added by MNHQ upon request:
OK, first of all, I know it's still September but we need to start this thread now because as you all know, having a truly Poncetastic Christmas involves precision planning, strategy, bravery, heroics, and frequently martyrdom. A bit like the war in Afghanistan, only with nicer food and sparkly shoes.

So, if you, like me, actually want to make the next twelve weeks of your life a misery by hand-crafting your cards, finding a huge bucket for Nigella's turkey in brine, pickling pears, shrivelling oranges in a low oven for those rustic au naturel decorations, dragging half a holly bush back from the woods, and just generally being a smug annoying jobsworth ponce, join me on this thread.

Feel free to post photos of previous tree-trimming, cake icing or table centrepiece triumphs, discuss this year's bauble colour themes, debate the merits of Delia versus Gordon, road-test a selection of canapes and cocktails, (all in the line of duty) and link to lovely inspirational photos/craft ideas for a truly Poncetastic Christmas.

Warning: If your idea of a good Christmas involves Pizza, ITV, gravy granules or anything with 'Aunt Bessies' on the packet, this is not the thread for you.The days are getting shorter, the leaves are starting to brown, that can only mean one thing- it's time to ignore the waves of Halloween decor all over your local The Range and head to the woods to start picking your own holly for that perfect Kirsty inspired wreath.

We want homemade stuffing recipes perfected by November, the handmade crackers draped in the most delicate of embroidered ribbon, mantle pieces draped in the most Scandinavian of wooden carvings, specialised stamps for the personalised wrapping paper ordered by next week and the word craft to be your official middle name by new year.

Happy ponceing and may Nigel and Nigella's fairy lights guide you on your way to getting the last box of rosemary and sea salt crackers in your own personal Bethlehem.

Yippeee a new poncetastic thread!! Thanks so much for starting it. Coincidentally yesterday a friend and I just booked onto a Christmas wreath workshop in December.

I did the paperwhites last year and I loved them but DS hated them said they smelled bad and turns out some people smell them as being quite fecal. 😦So will do amaryllis only this year.

Happy upcoming poncing everyone!

PinballWizened · 12/09/2025 07:05

@ExquisitelyDecorating thats fab thank you. Is that the 220g size?
Am I looking for tins without the plasticy lining in or does it not matter?

Ive been waiting for the thread to start to ask.

Surprise freezer cake sounds amazing!

ExquisitelyDecorating · 12/09/2025 07:23

They were Heinz 200g ones, I've kept the same set for the last couple
of years. Not sure about plasticcy lining, I can't say I've noticed that but am out at the moment, will check if I remember when I get home. I don't even like beans (apart from the BBQ flavour ones) and neither does one pf my DC so we don't have them very often.

Trumpton · 12/09/2025 08:20

@Magnoliasunrise
oh dear about the smell of Paperwhites being unpleasant for your husband. Fecal is not very festive!
The ones I have ordered this year are Ziva Paperwhites they are supposed to have less scent.

Frumpyunicorn · 12/09/2025 09:54

Hi everyone I am just checking in, I joined in last year but only briefly. I have already made my cake (I am making a wedding cake for a friend so just did them at the same time). Last year I made my own fabric crackers but not enough and there will be six of us so I need to make more. I also want to get some kind of green swag for our bannister but not really sure where to start.

Candlesonthetable · 12/09/2025 11:18

Yay, I love the poncetastic thread! I usually just lurk but I am going to try and contribute this year.

@Frumpyunicorn I love a bannister garland at Christmas. If you are thinking of making one I can recommend this video -
Or this one

But beware it becoming a tradition! We moved house before Christmas last year and the children insisted we have a bannister garland at the new house. Trouble is the staircase is more than twice as long as the one at our last house so it took me forever!

Who is the person who cleverly bakes individual Christmas cakes in tin cans? Can you please tell me what sort of can I need to be saving up? I normally do loaf size but have some singles and dieting relatives to bake for this year.

I have not decided on crafts yet, going to make a hot chocolate and peruse my knitting magazines in a bit.

@lucysmam did you get to finish your crochet village last year? I think the awkward-gauge church is as much a Poncetastic tradition as the opening post and @Trumpton ’s conservatory.

I used to bake these with my class. I’ve probably mentioned it on here before.
I’ve used mini bean tins but actually the tuna tins were the best size and easier to get out.

MrsClausMaybe · 12/09/2025 14:50

Hooray! Christmas!

On my to-make list is a lot of sewing:

  • Fabric crackers
  • Crowns to go in the crackers
  • A bag to store magnatiles (got some secondhand - without a box) - or should I try and be clever and do something magnetic...?!

To source is a box to store Christmas books in - anyone got any inspo? And a bunch of new unbreakable-yet-whimsical tree ornaments, as we smashed a bunch last year! Anyone got any online sources? Am not in the UK. DH mourns his lost hamburger ornament.

Already have some sugar cookie dough in the freezer from when a toddler demanded to make cookies and wandered off before we were even through mixing the dough, bless, he was just getting a start on prepping Christmas.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 12/09/2025 15:22

Yesss! It’s back!

Great theme @Trumpton! I was wondering what it would be this year 😊

My poncing is mainly finishing off what I started last year:
-I’ll finish decoupaging tile based trivets with Emma Bridgewater Christmas napkins to match the coasters I made last year.
-Finish/or make progress on my christmas granny square blanket.
-cut and sew 12 handmade christmas crackers and remember to order the snaps for them.
-finish sewing my felt mistletoe kit.

I will also be making some chilli jam, baking a Christmas cake, and attempting to make some mincemeat.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 12/09/2025 15:23

Oh I also have a bolt of material I originally bought to make the crackers with that turned out not to be suitable. So I may turn it into a cushion or something.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 12/09/2025 15:24

@MrsClausMaybe
What pattern are you following for the crackers? I keep changing my mind

PinballWizened · 12/09/2025 16:27

@Taurielwasntinthebook , @ExquisitelyDecorating thank you both. No tuna eaters in this house but DH will be thrilled if I start buying branded beans to get the small tins

Rose785 · 12/09/2025 16:48

I have just read about these mini christmas cakes on this thread! What a wonderful idea! I am thinking of doing this as table favours for my guests rather than the big cake that way everyone can easily take theirs home. Does anyone have any photos of theirs that they made in the past years? Just wondered how they looked once iced and or decorated! Thanks

Taurielwasntinthebook · 12/09/2025 17:05

I used to make them with 5-7 year olds so no photos and they were very cute - I did used to put a nip of brandy in the mix - you’d never get away with that now 🤣

Im going to follow the pattern in this little ebook - https://www.twigandtale.com/products/celebration-sewing-patterns-ebook-6-simple-projects-to-stitch-copy

It looks ridiculously simple… but I bodied some without a pattern a couple of years ago and they’re frankly quite crap - I want to do them properly this time!

Celebrating - Sewing Patterns eBook ~ 6 party projects to stitch

A collection of six sweet, simple projects for sewing party decorations and favours. All of the projects are suitable for beginners and for sewing with children.

I'm here for the homemade stuffing recipes...

ExquisitelyDecorating · 12/09/2025 18:30

These are mine from last year, no icing on the sides just used one of the tins to cut out discs of marzipan and white fondant icing and stuck on (Not Very Poncetastic) toppers from Lidl. Froze the plain ones wrapped in clingfilm.

We got burger / hot dog / pickle unbreakable Christmas tree baubles from Flying Tiger Copenhagen last year. I'm not sure if they are online, but we actually bought them in Copenhagen last Christmas. I think they have quite a few stores depending where in the world you are. Alternatively, Sass and Belle do some which are often on Vinted and Ebay.

Peculiah · 12/09/2025 18:39

Slipping in the back door and settling into a quiet corner to enjoy some vicarious poncing.

Christingly · 12/09/2025 18:40

I followed this pattern last year for the fabric crackers. Somebody else on here ( sorry I can't remember who) had used it and recommended it. It was very straightforward (aside from me trying to figure out how to get my pattern to be central on the middles)

https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1071766898/wonder-cracker-pdf-sewing-pattern-stitch

I tried making the mini cakes a few years ago but think I left them in the oven too long because they were a bit dry. But equally my christmas cake recipe might not be that great. Anyone got a fantastic recipe they could share? And any suggestions on how to adapt that recipe to make it alcohol free?

Oh I should add, I trimmed off any knobbly bits then turned them over and iced the bottoms.

I always loved a good ponce but have lost my mojo with Christmas. Kids grown up and spending Christmas elsewhere round the country, mum passed. I just can't be arsed but will follow the thread and cheer you all on. Happy poncing.

I love Flying Tiger and there is one here in town. Fingers crossed they have lovely baubles this year!

Ahhh it's back!
We have moved recently and the house needs lots of work. The aim is to have at least a dining room decorated for Xmas.
Gingerbread gin and blackberry whisky are infusing already.
Does anyone have a recommendation for where to get nice cotton napkins?

Sending you gentle hugs Hedjwitch. Sorry to hear about your lovely Mum. Flowers
