We all came down with the flu on Christmas eve. Kids opened presents but it was a real effort. No one was eating, everyone was really ill. Just starting to feel a bit better, but I'm just so disappointed we missed Christmas. I put so much planning and effort in and it was wasted. Kids will be back to school and we haven't done anything or seen anyone.
I'm finding it really hard to accept which sounds ridiculous and I know some people are in a far worse situation.

Did you freeze all the Xmas food?

I would just call this coming Saturday Xmas day and do it all again

DappledThings · 31/12/2024 08:58

What's to stop you doing it this weekend? It's still Christmas. Sunday is the 12th day. You could have a lovely meal and a couple of extra presents and a proper 12th night celebration.

Pandasnacks · 31/12/2024 08:59

My kids aren’t back in school until next Tuesday, can’t you see people and have a bit of a celebration before then?

OrangutanDaisies · 31/12/2024 09:00

So what are you going to do from now until back to school and work?

ChristmasGrinch24 · 31/12/2024 09:01

There's still like 6 days left of the school hols?

Changingplace · 31/12/2024 09:01

You can declare this weekend Christmas! Just do it now you’re feeling better :)

Twinstudy · 31/12/2024 09:02

We were all ill last year, just pushed everything back a week. It was pretty nice really!

mummysontheginalready · 31/12/2024 09:05

have a new years day celebration instead

Toooldtopretend · 31/12/2024 09:07

My husband started with it on Christmas Day and has now passed it to me for new year. I feel really cheated after looking forward to the time off work. Seems to happen every year though so I don’t know why I’m surprised!

Pineapplewaves · 31/12/2024 09:08

It's only Tuesday, Christmas doesn't officially end until Sunday (12th night) and the kids don't go back to school until Monday. You have plenty of time to celebrate Christmas.

Or make a big deal of New Year instead.

pictoosh · 31/12/2024 09:20

These things happen. There's nothing you can do about flu. It's a force of nature.

In a year's time it will be Christmas again. Enjoy Hogmany and New Years Day in whatever way you can.

Don't dwell on the lost Christmas. It was beyond your control.

CoastalCalm · 31/12/2024 09:25

Redo it without the presents obviously

KittenBiscuit · 31/12/2024 09:27

The first Xmas I can properly remember, think I was six, we all had D&V and were all really poorly. Father Christmas still visited us, and we managed an hour out of bed to open presents. With hindsight I don't know how my parents were able to do it, and it is one of my most treasured memories of childhood and how much they did for me.

Don't be sad OP, it will be a funny memory for the family to look back on in years to come - 'Do you remember that year we were all ill and had a second Xmas in January!'

Dreamsof · 31/12/2024 09:37

This was us last year! With the addition of a dear friend dying before Christmas and their funeral was just as we were all starting to feel better.

What I can say is that this year has been the BEST Christmas ever and I'm still feeling very very Christmassy so we've more than made up for it. I hope this time next year you have the same and this year's Christmas just becomes a family story of the time everybody was ill over Christmas.

Bornnotbourne · 31/12/2024 09:38

When I used work shifts and the kids were little Christmas could be any time between breaking up and going back to school it was so much fun. I told our local vicar who said there is evidence that Jesus was born in Spring so his family celebrated twice. I’d go for it if I were you. I often do two Christmas dinners, but I am a pig!!

bigkidatheart · 31/12/2024 09:45

I remember this feeling well. Can you not do New Years day instead - I know it's short notice but you should still be able to get fresh food for a nice dinner.

Sorry you had a crappy time ❤

gamerchick · 31/12/2024 09:49

Do it again. We have the full turkey/cracker fest on New year's day. Hope you're all feeling better.

HPandthelastwish · 31/12/2024 09:55

Panto is still on so book that, and then redo Christmas on Sunday.

Lazydaisy991 · 31/12/2024 10:37

Thanks everyone! We are still coughing and probably contagious but we decided we would have a nice dinner tonight with christmas crackers , christmas songs and board games. Unfortunately opened all the presents but will try and think of something else to add

If finances allow you could do an online escape room. Or a buyagift experience and then plan it out together (for example we are going to zip world so the kids like helping plan the hotel etc). Have a good night OP!

FunkyMonks · 31/12/2024 10:43

Sorry to hear OP you've all been poorly this was our first Christmas with us all being well to enjoy last few either of my two DCs have been poorly so I know how it can feel, as others have said maybe celebrate it this weekend.

Sheepdog49 · 31/12/2024 10:54

I feel you! One Christmas I spent in hospital with one kid and missed the entire thing.

We had a ‘Christmas weekend’ mid Jan - did the works, got turkey and had a roast, even did little stockings and mince pies - it was a fantastic weekend and totally healing - we all remember it with loads of joy and it made a miserable January so much better! We got crackers and put Christmas lights around one of the indoor plants and watched a Christmas movie.

Life is sometimes a b*tch with its timing of things so we have to think creatively :)

Merry Christmas for whenever you celebrate x

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 31/12/2024 10:57

I love the resilience here!
Good advice for you (and all) OP.

Baileysatchristmas · 31/12/2024 10:59

I hope you have a lovely day today op!

GCAcademic · 31/12/2024 11:02

Can you devote a weekend in January to a Christmas re-do? January is such a long and depressing month, and it would break it up nicely.
