Well meant gifts that didn't hit the mark

Here's a thread to post your disappointing gifts that you can't be disappointed with in real life! Let off a little steam without upsetting anyone!!

My lovely daughter bought me some novelty earrings. I never wear novelty earrings but she's so proud of them i have to wear them. She was so secured about me opening them but now I have to work out how little I can get away with wearing them so she doesn't realise I hate them!

Also DH only bought what was on my list. It was a cheap and simple list. I would have liked him to choose something he thought I would like. After 22 years not sure why I expect that though!

Your children sound ghastly @Whatayear2023 but I’m not sure what your post has to do with the thread subject?

My friend’s mad aunty once got her a sexy nylon babydoll nightie, when she was about ten years old.

Don't you think the poster is feeling bad enough without someone sinking the boot in?!

@Whatayear2023 take all your son's presents back. Not sure what you can do about your DD! Could you have got a 2nd hand switch?

My DM bought me a lovely jigsaw but it's a Christmas one and I only do them in the run up to Christmas. I accept this is self imposed but this one will have to wait until the end of the year for me to enjoy it.

@ApolloandDaphne Christmas does technically run from today to 6th January (before this it's been Advent) so you could extend your timeframe and do it in the next few days and it still be Christmas.

Otherwise, put it somewhere safe and remember for next year!

puddleofpuppies · 25/12/2024 18:25

Every year DH and I buy thoughtful gifts for his family - in the 12 years we have been doing this we have not received a single gift or card in return. I’d be happy with some chocolates just as a gesture! I think I’m just going to stop bothering next year. His D(?)M also once bought him a box of cheap supermarket chocolates that contained an ingredient he is allergic to and some novelty socks (sent straight to us from Amazon) for a big birthday…

TypingoftheDead · 25/12/2024 18:28

I asked for one thing for Christmas from our hosts (even gave a direct link to it). Got a bag of sweets and nothing else, while everyone else opened several presents before we left. I was told not to get them gifts, just things to put on the table. I’d have bought proper gifts, otherwise, though.
Off topic but mum’s dog had also had a dirty protest while we were out and I had to scrub the floor myself when we got back, since mum is disabled.
Might be the start of my villain origin story.

Mother87 · 25/12/2024 18:28

DS25 got DH a dogbowl with "Dad's Man Bowl" on the side - as i'm always complaining about his eating habits (often gross). I found it very very unfunny - in a kind of, we must accept boys-will-be-boys way...
DH also got me some (admittedly posh) "bumbum firming cream" & am NOT saying I don't need it but... very deflated tbh

Mother87 · 25/12/2024 18:30

Monkeybutt1 · 25/12/2024 12:23

My well meaning MIL bought me 2 huge tubs of anti wrinkle cream, one of which is retinol which I react to. I'm only 44 and didn't think I looked that wrinkly 😂

Yep - DH got me saggy-arse/bum-firming cream which I DO need but...

DH and I decided against Christmas presents for each other this year as it’s the first Christmas with 2 DC. My DP’s always just transfer money into my bank account on Christmas morning, we see them Boxing Day and oh how I wish they’d rather just think of something that I would like rather than just cash. It’s not about the cost, it’s about the thought for me. I’d much rather something lovely like a well recommended book for £10 than £100 of emptiness. But that just shows how little they know about me, they have no interest in me as an adult which is quite sad really.

My in-laws are like this. When we do see them at Xmas they whinge about how much we buy for the kids. Which is mad as they've just transferred £200 into each of the kids accounts. They do buy them gifts but only if it's something they are also interested in. Eg 16 year old gets all her sailing stuff bought for her as FIL is into sailing. And 18 year old gets loads of her art stuff as MIL is a trust but when it comes to something small and thoughtful they just don't seem to be capable. My mum on the other hand is the other way and tries to buy meaningful stuff but often misses the mark. We just hit back from my parents house and she bought my dd who is a chronic nail biter a nice manicure set.

I got my usual snoopy branded clothing. It's pale blue with a picture of snoopy playing tennis. I usually wear black and I'm a bit of a metal head so not really the one! It's ok I'll wear it to bed!

I feel very ungrateful. I got a voucher for afternoon tea for one. I'm a single parent, quite lonely at times. Actually feel like the gift is tone deaf. It's made me feel quite low. I'm sitting here alone waiting on my kid returning from their dad's. Wish I hadn't opened it. It has accentuated my loneliness.

That is crap of the person who got you it! Hope you can invite them to go with you - and pay for their own when you go. Message might get the point over to them

Lovemusic82 · 25/12/2024 18:34

I had some lovely gifts and some pretty disappointing ones. My dad has discovered temu so I had a box of random crap that I will probably never use (as did the DC’s). New ish DP gave me a t-shirt and something sexy to wear for his benefit and not mine (not much thought gone into it) whilst I spent twice as much on things I knew he would love. I tell my DM every year not to buy me food, every year she ignores me, every year she buys me fudge (I don’t really like fudge) 😬. That’s my moaning done.

Nice gifts were…..a lovely picture frame, a canvas photo print which I love, a new handbag from my dc (which I chose).

Bumcake · 25/12/2024 17:05

I’d be tempted to bin that right in front of her face. It really doesn’t come under the category of ‘well meaning’.

i just put it down dont know where it gone to never mind

LunarLanding · 25/12/2024 18:36

DH gifted me a dress is opposite to my style, two sizes too big and a colour I would never wear. It is just not me. I would never had chosen it for myself.

GingerKombucha · 25/12/2024 18:37

My husband gave me a £5k diamond necklace but hasn't done a single thing, he lay there and critiqued how I was filling the stockings without getting off the sofa. He has had no part in anything and I was left from 4 onwards when he, my mum and my dad went for a 2 hour nap, to entertain the 6 month old and 3 year old. My (full time, long hours) work has been incredibly stressful and I'm on medication for anxiety over work / family / Christmas / life. I want to throw the necklace in his face.

I got a set of scrubs.... I remarked how practical they were when we last sat in A and E..... they are actually really comfortable, a nice colour and material, great for around the house so I've ended up pleased although I don't work for NHS

Love this. As long as you like them!

I miss my aunt buying us gifts, she used to buy us so many random but great presents! One year my sister and I got random handbags (as teens) which we both ended up using for years. Never would have picked them ourselves. I feel like scrubs are something she might have chosen and we'd have ended up loving!

DP and I don't exchange gifts.
We just had a little alone time and he said - this is all I need.
Sorry pass the sick bucket.

I understand. All I wanted for Christmas was to spend time with my Mum and a family friend I have known all my life. Both in their nineties and both interesting, funny and much loved women. It's enough for me that they are still with us.

TheBunyip · 25/12/2024 18:55

I smelled some perfume at an artisan craft type place ages ago. Sent DH a link and indeed he’s bought it for me. Now I’m not very well and I enthusiastically sprayed it on myself and the smell made me throw up 😭. I hope I can get over it when I’m better

i bought him some trainers that he doesn’t like and are too small so we’ve done very well this year

Left · 25/12/2024 18:59

Paint clear nail varnish on the earrings is the new cancel the cheque!

I LOVE stationery and once bought some for a relative. A few weeks later they were ranting about how stationery is the sort of present you buy for an aunt that you don’t like very much - she’s not my auntie so think one of her nieces got the blame for the stationery set. Awks 🙈

8 months pregnant and aware I’m feeling fragile but after planning, buying and wrapping gifts for all members of my and DH’s family, which involved a lot of physical pain bending down on the floor, today I unwrapped a jar of Nutella, a where’s Wally book (apparently to do in labour!) and 3 posters, one from a TV show I like, and 2 from shows I actively dislike. It happens every year and i don’t know why I ever expect anything more but I just don’t know what to do anymore, I’m just so sick of every occasion being ruined by the utter lack of effort and feeling like he doesn’t know me/care about me at all. Sorry, rant over!

ITSSSSCHRISTMASSS · 25/12/2024 19:04

Not me, for the first time DH has done good, but my DDs have been quite disappointing with sulking and some ingratitude. They are 10 & 12, there is some competitiveness between them so we tend to do similar gifts each, guaranteed if we don’t there will be “o but I like that”. We stuck to lists but still got some sulking, 12yo would have loved the bag gifted to 10yo and 10yo wanted the hoodie 12yo was given 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤯 All of them got bags and I thought I’d done good in assigning who got what. The hoodies originally weren’t ment to be Christmas gifts, I’d ordered the ones they wanted ages ago, 10yo was Christmas themed and she has been wearing it, 12 yos only arrived yesterday so got lumped into Christmas gifts, I had no idea it was a dupe of a popular brand, I actually thought it was just a random hoodie she liked in her favourite colour. I feel I can’t win sometimes.

One DD was upset she got a shit secret Santa gift in a family SS we did last night. To be fair DH and I did drop the ball, our 10yo had her, we forget she’s only 10 at times and needs guidance as she generally acts so much more mature. I managed to salvage it by passing my 10yo something to pretend fell out of the gift bag.

Im actually pretty impressed with DH, usually I buy myself gifts for him to give me but this year the man’s done really well, not a mug in sight!

Jom222 · 25/12/2024 19:08

My poor stupid H was reminded last week that it appeared he hadn’t gotten me anything. I’d emailed him one small item I’d like and we both ended up in tears when he kept saying he never got the email ( it went to his spam folder 🤔)

I categorically refused to resend the email and fix his poor planning.

I was disappointed and angry and ordered it for myself. Dumb man found the email and ordered it, both arrived yesterday. So I now have 2 travel mugs!

However in a valiant bid for redemption he took himself to the jeweler and bought me a lovely pearl necklace.

Which is much much too small for me. He didn’t have a clue that a fat old lady wouldn’t look good in a 16” necklace. We’ll go to the jeweler and exchange for something suitable.

Sorry for the loss of your dad x

Thank you so much. I really do appreciate you taking the time to reply..very kind of you ❤️

Stumpy54321 · 25/12/2024 19:09

Last year we didn’t get each other anything, we both agreed as there really wasn’t anything either of us wanted. Again this year there wasn’t anything I wanted so dh agreed to pay for all my hairdressers appointments for next year a good result I thought.
The worst gifts I ever received are though from my parents. One year a skirt that was 3 sizes too big and nowhere near my style that went straight to a charity shop. Also another year as a family of 4 was given a £10 gift card for all of us.

Pagens always seem angry to me

Maybe they are angry at your misspelling of Pagan.

They aren't exactly common and are in general quite well known as peaceful people, I'm surprised you have managed to find and piss so many of them off to categorize them as 'angry' lol.

NancyJoan · 25/12/2024 19:13

A Nespresso coffee machine. I mentioned a while ago I’d like one, but was researching which one, what sort of pods etc etc. And DH has v sweetly chosen me one, but it is very much not what I would have bought, is HUGE, and the pods are a faff, according to reviews. I am notoriously picky, have often returned gifts if I won’t wear them, but this feels too mean, like I’m just being horribly fussy. Ugh.

How is it his fault if it was spam filtered? and how do you know he hasn't bought you anything a week out? and why are yous crying about it? and why wouldn't you just re-send it? this whole story is unnecessarily dramatic.

A jar of Nutella from your husband? I'd be ranting for sure.
