The other meal on Christmas Day

We're doing turkey and trimmings for "lunch" but fancy doing something nice for our other meal. Lunch is at 2ish so we want to eat again about 6. Usually just M&S party food or charceuterie. Any ideas for something different? Should be something people can graze on in front of the telly.

How the hell are you gonna be hungry if you’ve just eaten at two with i imagine desert as well by six I don’t know about that

TwinkleLights24 · 20/12/2024 20:43

We always make a buffet/picky tea.

Alifemadelessordinary · 20/12/2024 20:44

I'd be aggrieved if I didn't get a picky plate at tea time on Christmas Day.
Don't overthink it. M&S Charcuterie sounds perfect.

pizzaHeart · 20/12/2024 20:45

Cheese board?

mynameiscalypso · 20/12/2024 20:45

We used to have a nice ham + a cheeseboard + bread at that time of night when I was growing up. Now, we push lunch back a bit and just stuff ourselves with canapés

WhateverThen · 20/12/2024 20:45

Nothing that involves more prep than throwing some part baked rolls in the oven.

Turkey sandwiches in our house. Maybe cheese and crackers. Normally have lots of cheese, meats, etc in the fridge for people to help themselves to. I’ve found most people want something, but at different times and different amounts, so apart from being totally unwilling to prep anything, it would be a waste.

Fabulouslyunfabulous · 20/12/2024 20:45

We eat Christmas dinner and then just cheese. All of the cheese in the whole wide world. It’s my favourite part of Christmas. Just cheese.

HoppityBun · 20/12/2024 20:46

If you eat at 2, surely you won’t finish until around 3 and it seems bizarre to me that you’d want to eat 3 hours later. Make extra gravy for the main meal and then just have the leftovers with some cake. Honestly I wouldn’t even think about this

QueSyrahSyrah · 20/12/2024 20:46

I know this isn't AIBU but unless you mistyped 12 as 2, and 8 as 6, then YABVU. I'm not a 'make a chicken last all week' MNetter by any stretch but I can't imagine wanting anything else ---- (aside from Quality Street or a couple of slices of Terrys Chocolate Orange in the evening) after a full Turkey & Trimmings lunch.

To answer more sensibly, we have a big cheeseboard and charcuterie on Christmas Day; but we have it instead of the Turkey, not as well as.

Glitterybee · 20/12/2024 20:46

Turkey & stuffing sandwich.

or dessert if you hadn’t already had it earlier

MikeRafone · 20/12/2024 20:47

im doing a fruit platter for over xmas

wster melon, melon, strawberries, black grapes, kiwi, orange & a bag of frozen mango. Add in some mixed nuts without salt

ww have lunch about 2.30 and then have pudding about 4pm then the fruit platter comes out about 7pm

CandiedPrincess · 20/12/2024 20:47

Other meal? Other meal? What other meal!

ShortyShorts · 20/12/2024 20:48

We eat at 3pm and then we'll put out some sliced meats, bread, cheese pickles etc about 7pm.

Everyone just helps themselves if they're peckish.

Sunflowers098 · 20/12/2024 20:51

DM brings in Christmas cake and cups of tea at about 5:30. We all groan that we're all too full...and then we get stuck in!

I am grateful to you for not using the terms ‘picky bits’ or ‘picky tea’ here! 😬They really set my teeth on edge, though I can’t really explain why!

snowlady4 · 20/12/2024 21:06

What about lunch at 2 and have your desert at 6? It seems too close together for another feast.
I usually like a turkey sandwich but not until about 9!

Tortielady · 20/12/2024 21:11

If your appetites have recovered by 6-7, cheese and crackers would be nice. At some point during the holidays, we'll be having that, probably with a gherkin or two 😋

I think you're being picky now 😉

We will have a tray of cheese, crackers, grapes, dates and pate and Melba toast from about 7pm.

Plus mince pies I will make on Christmas Eve ready to cook when required.

Ha, fair enough! 🙂

Whijfif · 20/12/2024 21:19

We eat Christmas lunch about 2.30. Then usually have biscuits and cheese, pigs in blankets, Christmas cake about 7pm.

IdaClair · 20/12/2024 21:19

There is only one meal on Christmas Day. It’s a feast day. Just like Sundays. I was brought up this way, only one meal on Sundays and feast days, no breakfast or lunch, ready for the big dinner. We still do it this way. I’m not going to stop people from having a bit of something if they want to but there aren’t any other meals.

It’s a great idea! Will add to my list.

MrsPeregrine · 20/12/2024 21:21

We normally just have picky bits. Crackers, nice cheeses that we don’t normally get, chutney, silver skin onions, ham, slices of turkey, maybe some crusty bread with butter, crisp etc.

HPandthelastwish · 20/12/2024 21:22

The other meal is chocolate isn't it?

We have adult lunchables (cheese, meat and crackers) pitta, veg sticks, dips and crisps, chocolates and fruit. But there are only a few of us we aren't catering for the masses, it's largely DIY.
