The other meal on Christmas Day

We're doing turkey and trimmings for "lunch" but fancy doing something nice for our other meal. Lunch is at 2ish so we want to eat again about 6. Usually just M&S party food or charceuterie. Any ideas for something different? Should be something people can graze on in front of the telly.

If you are eating at about 2, presumably you won't be finished til at least 3. So I'd be suprised if anyone is very hungry by 6..... I'd be more thinking 8 or so.
However- I love cheese and charcuterie and some fresh bread and that is the easy option. Maybe with some cut fruit to pick at. But after a heavy lunch something tasty but less greasy might be nice.
What are you having for breakfast? Smoked salmon on blinis or something if you aren't having anything like that in the morning. I'd actually really enjoy a good homeade (or nice shop one) vegetable soup with bread, as it feels like a real and balanced meal (if I just graze on biscuits and chocolate all day i feel a bit weird. Both nauseous yet still hungry all at the same time) but doesn't really qualify as a sofa snack......

We’ll probably just have a cheese board at about 8, although that’s just for the ones that eat lots. I couldn’t face any more food after the big meal.

We eat Christmas dinner and then just cheese. All of the cheese in the whole wide world. It’s my favourite part of Christmas. Just cheese.

Yep same here! It's not really a separate meal it's just one very long meal with breaks in our house 😁

JamonMfucker · 20/12/2024 21:26

We have lunch around 2, finish about 3ish. We then go for a long walk with the dc & dog and they’re usually hungry again by 7pm! I always do party food and a cheeseboard. Usually get my party food from Sainsbury’s or M&S as I like their selection.

melmos · 20/12/2024 21:35

We do a traditional lunch then a couple of hours later a round of puddings and desserts, then a couple of hours later a massive cheese board. It's great and you get to enjoy each bit without feeling sick full and we the games are normally after the first two and during the cheese course. Breakfast is bucks fizz and coffee plus chocolate gifts. And late night Christmas bagel is a nice way to finish the day.

johnyhadasister · 20/12/2024 21:38

deli, cheeses, salads, left over turkey , even stuffing with a bit of sauce on top or whatever. Massive pudding. We don't stay hungry after it :D

HarryMcGraw · 20/12/2024 21:41

It’s already been said - turkey and stuffing sandwiches. Made by someone other than the cook who prepared the dinner.

Fuckthecamelyourodeinon · 20/12/2024 22:00

Can you push breakfast back to 10-11 then lunch at 3-4pm means you can have peanuts with a g&t for supper?

Mill3nniel · 20/12/2024 22:02

I also wouldn't want another meal after Christmas lunch at 2pm but if you do how about tacos or nachos. You can make the beef chilli ahead of time and then either put in dishes on tortilla chips with cheese and nachos and pop in the oven or just put some tacos in the oven and serve with guacamole, salsa and some salad.

GettingStuffed · 20/12/2024 22:06

We normally have breakfast and a late lunch, around 4pm, then we're usually done for the day.

TryingToHealButFailing · 20/12/2024 22:11

This thread is making me hungry!
we like crumpets or sausage rolls and mimosas for brekkie, big lunch around 4 then some choccies/crisps/ nuts late evening with an action movie.

ThisIcyHare · 20/12/2024 22:13

Ham, bread, leftover Turkey, cheese, picky bits, fruit, chocolate, perfect!

ChristmasEveNotChristmasSteve · 20/12/2024 22:13

With my family we usually have crackers and cheese/spreads/olives or cheese on toast.

Peanuts with a g&t sounds like the absolute perfect way to spend Christmas night.

Scutterbug · 20/12/2024 22:20

We do pastries for breakfast. Food around 3/4 so no need for anything else but sometimes the cheeseboard comes out!

RosesAndHellebores · 20/12/2024 22:26

Traditionally we had lunch at 3pm. No second meal but birthday cake and tea at about 6.30pm with the second round of presents.

We might manage chocolates and satsumas later.

Sodullincomparison · 20/12/2024 22:28

It made me hungry too… so much so I just opened some of the Christmas pate and had some crackers 😂😂😂

EmmyPankhurst · 20/12/2024 22:29

Brunch. Then dinner about 4pm when I do family christmas.

We're usually only hitting cheese at about 10pm as we usually have a digestion break (or two) to play a boardgame after main or pud. After pud is better as you can clear the table for game playing and cheese can be assembled for picking on around the game. And we can wash all the crystal except the port glasses and put it away!

I am grateful to you for not using the terms ‘picky bits’ or ‘picky tea’ here! 😬They really set my teeth on edge, though I can’t really explain why!

Me too.

I know this isn't AIBU but unless you mistyped 12 as 2, and 8 as 6, then YABVU. I'm not a 'make a chicken last all week' MNetter by any stretch but I can't imagine wanting anything else ---- (aside from Quality Street or a couple of slices of Terrys Chocolate Orange in the evening) after a full Turkey & Trimmings lunch.

To answer more sensibly, we have a big cheeseboard and charcuterie on Christmas Day; but we have it instead of the Turkey, not as well as.

How greedy.
in our house we share one chicken breast and a chipolata sausage for Christmas lunch and are so stuffed we can't eat again until New Year.

seeing as nobody here seems to eat anything other than a roast lunch at Christmas it amazes me where all the special festive supermarket food goes. I suspect some posters are being economical with the truth 🤔

natalieplusone · 20/12/2024 22:36

We are having part baked rolls warm from oven just with butter, cheese cut up, cocktail sausages, sausage rolls, slices of thick ham, breadsticks, crisps oh and chocs!

BrendaSmall · 20/12/2024 22:36

We have breakfast at around 8, then a normal size roast at 12/12.30, nothing too much, then cold meat, pickles, cheese, crackers, crisps at around 5/5.30! We don’t have big meals, knowing my husband he’ll get the chocolate out at around 7/7.30, then bed by 8.30/9.00, so a normal day for us 🤣🤣

Goldbar · 20/12/2024 22:38

We solve this issue by having Christmas dinner at 6pm (brunch at 11.30am).

How greedy! A whole chicken breast, we have dust and paper and don’t eat again until Easter Sunday.

natwalesrug · 20/12/2024 22:42

Cheese and more wine about 9 pm and then bed time!!
