The other meal on Christmas Day

We're doing turkey and trimmings for "lunch" but fancy doing something nice for our other meal. Lunch is at 2ish so we want to eat again about 6. Usually just M&S party food or charceuterie. Any ideas for something different? Should be something people can graze on in front of the telly.

@DeanElderberry do you do any active "looking after" or just let them get on with it ? Also how do they like wind ? We are at the top of a hill so very windy

DeanElderberry · 21/12/2024 19:42

I just leave them to it - they grow about 2 metres tall and do get knocked over by the wind (and eventually need to be 'topped' so I can walk past them) but they thrive on neglect in cool damp Ireland. They are a real winter treat.

MaraMar · 21/12/2024 19:55

Our other meal is always the dessert we were too full from Christmas dinner to eat. Might have turkey sandwiches if we're still hungry after that.

DeanElderberry · 21/12/2024 19:59

PS on the Jerusalem artichokes, it is often recommended that you just plant a few that you have left over from food prep, but to select the biggest and easiest to prepare as they tend to grow up into similar shapes. Come to think of it, the peels and bits I tipped out probably all came from what looked like easy to tackle specimens.

Christmas Day eating looks like this in our house

7am - snacking on some choc whilst dc open the presents
9am ish - smoked salmon, bagels, cream cheese, pastries

more snacking on choc, crisps, nuts

3pm - massive Xmas lunch
5pm or later - tuck into the desserts
7pm - start on the cheeses, chutneys and crackers.

maybe some more snacking.

There is only one meal on Christmas Day. It’s a feast day. Just like Sundays. I was brought up this way, only one meal on Sundays and feast days, no breakfast or lunch, ready for the big dinner. We still do it this way. I’m not going to stop people from having a bit of something if they want to but there aren’t any other meals.

No breakfast? No celebrations or heroes while waiting for Xmas lunch/dinner ?
I find if all I eat is dinner I am so hungry by bedtime

Bakedpumpkin · 21/12/2024 21:28

No no no to only one meal!
We tend to not stuff ourselves at the main lunch just have a normal sized roast. Cheese board and chocolates in the evening.

ribiera · 22/12/2024 07:44

We have homemade sausage rolls in the freezer to put in the oven if anyone is ever hungry enough. They never are. We put the cheese platter out after pudding and that just stays out.

SallyWD · 22/12/2024 08:03

We have a late breakfast/brunch, plenty of snacks throughout the day then Christmas lunch/dinner around 4pm (because I can never get it ready earlier!). People are usually pretty full in the evening but I'll usually get out the cheese selection or do mince pies with brandy cream.

NCTDN · 22/12/2024 08:25

I think reading this there's very much a generation thing. When I was growing up, like many on here were world have a full three course meal all in one sitting then around 6/7pm would be another sort down meal of cooked meats, bread, salad etc. I don't know how my mum did it tbh.
We're very much not like others on here that we have a starter then a break. Then the mains and a long break. Pudding is usually much later in the day with cheese and crackers after that.

Jellycatspyjamas · 22/12/2024 09:42

We have a cooked breakfast around 10 and Christmas dinner around 4, with lots of snacking on crisis and chocolate. Usually dessert is eaten around 7 by the time people feel like it and the adults have some cheese and crackers as a supper after the kids are in bed. I couldn’t be arsed doing another cooked meal at Christmas - I’m toying with baking muffins for breakfast this year and saving the cooked breakfast for Boxing Day.

I’ll also be snacking on a crisis some time around 1pm 😂

we do this as in usually save the cooked breakfast for the day after when it’s chill and there’s no inevitable rush. Christmas Day I usually just do frozen pastry’s in the air fryer and pre-made pancakes with orange juice and coffee. St Stephen’s Day we don’t have dinner until 6pm so we have a nice cooked full “Irish” about 11am as a sort of brunch

AlexisP90 · 22/12/2024 09:50

Other meal?!

We usually have christmas lunch then it's time for the host to relax (me this year!) So it's just a help yourself to the fridge... which is stocked with cheese, Crackers, rolls etc etc and obv plenty of turkey left.

It's my first year hosting and honestly I don't plan on cooking more than 1 meal.

Eat an orange if you're still hungry and leave me with my wine.

DeanElderberry · 22/12/2024 10:46

@Aliflowers St Stephen’s Day . . . we have a nice cooked full “Irish” about 11am as a sort of brunch

I have just returned from the local Spar with my Clonakilty black and white puddings. I already have a roll of gluten-free sausage meat ready for portioning out. I'll probably eat it a bit earlier than that though, so that I can go for a walk.

Jellycatspyjamas · 22/12/2024 10:49

Lol total Freudian slip there but yes we rarely get through the day without someone having a meltdown.

I am grateful to you for not using the terms ‘picky bits’ or ‘picky tea’ here! 😬They really set my teeth on edge, though I can’t really explain why!

@Clafoutie
Sorry but doesn’t everyone have a picky tea on Christmas Day? 🤭

(Have a fabulous day whatever you eat)

Aliflowers · 22/12/2024 11:07

Its kearns sausages here along with black and white pudding from our local butchers (not fussed with the bits in clonakilty). Full rings of black and white because it’s the best big of the breakfast. Big shop being delivered today but will pick up a fresh batch Christmas Eve for the toast with the fry

DeanElderberry · 22/12/2024 11:11

The advantage with Clonakilty for me is they're made with oatmeal - I'm allergic to wheat. Roll on the day when all the Irish sausage-and-pudding producers switch to non-wheat rusk etc.

Aliflowers · 22/12/2024 11:21

SIL is coeliac so understand the frustration! It’s a minefield when she’s here for food because there so much hidden gluten in stuff.

Whichone2024 · 22/12/2024 11:24

We don’t get anything specific for later on but there is always leftovers or whatever.
growing up we were always told if hungry later to help ourselves to leftovers/toast/cereal/stocking treats and just do the same now.

some years it was a turkey cranberyy sandwch, or a bowl with potato’s, stuffing and gravy… or stocking chocolate lol. Just play it by ear.
Boxing Day usually soup for lunch and cheeseboard for dinner.
but anyone hungry in between help yourself to whatever is kicking about lol.

Whichone2024 · 22/12/2024 11:26

Oh and there is always plenty of Pringles 😝

FiatMultiplaWhopper · 22/12/2024 14:13

Breakfast is croissants, Christmas dinner served around 1pm.
snack on chocolate and crisps.
then everyone just helps themselves to leftovers, cheese etc during the evening.

turkey sandwiches and homemade sausage rolls for Boxing Day.

definitely would not be serving another meal on Christmas Day.

Other meal? Other meal? What other meal!

Exactly, isn't Xmas day food just one long continuous meal/picking/treats. 😀
