My family of five has just scarfed down 36 mince pies and two tubs of clotted cream in one sitting

I'm slightly shell-shocked 😂 I spent the morning making them and suggested we all take a little mid-afternoon break to have a couple. Half an hour later...crumbs! I suppose I had better make some more.

How many mince pies do you reckon you and yours could get through in one go? I had three. I think ds2 had 8 😳

If they're not that big, DH might have stretched to two, I'd probably only have had one. Maybe I'm mean, but if I'd cooked 36 mince pies for a family of five, I'd be thinking that their lot for Xmas, unless that's the only sweet treat extra they have, and wouldn't be making any more. We're all different.

Can I ask, do any of you actually feel a bit sick now?

ChristmasKelpie · 19/12/2024 18:07

My Husband and two lads on a week when they were hardly at home would demolish 5kg of cheese so a few trays of mince pies would be a scooby snack.
I have just prepared 30 pigs in blankets for Christmas day for myself and DH, he is complaining it isn't enough even though i have another 30 honey and mustard chipolatas for boxing day.

BB49 · 19/12/2024 18:07

OP I would like your recipe! I adore mince pies and could probably eat 4 mini ones :) do not touch shop bought ones though, too claggy and sweet.

feathermucker · 19/12/2024 18:11

Imagine telling people they've had enough mince pies 😂😂

OP enjoy (and share your recipe)

DeffoNeedANameChange · 19/12/2024 18:12

I also make little jam tart sized mince pies without proper lids. My 8yo managed four yesterday (not quite in one sitting, but over the space of about two hours) so I can easily imagine a 20yo eating eight!

One question though - how many toilets do you have in the house?!!

I know right! MN is not the place to boast about eating accomplishments

I’ve had bowel surgery and I must confess this was first thought too. All that dried fruit haha.

For that reason, and also because I can’t stand them, zero for me. DD and DH would have one each. But ours are shop bought not homemade so less moreish.

Bumblenums · 19/12/2024 20:12

Home made mince pies are way better than shop ones that are too sickly- I don't eat the shop ones but I will happily eat my way through 4-5 of my mother in laws straight out of the oven - with brandy butter obvs!

SoySaucy · 19/12/2024 20:13
Oh My God Reaction GIF

Don’t you know any more than 1/4 of one mince pie is positively disgusting.
2 mince pies would feed my family of 5 for a week! 😜

I know!! 😂That is peak MN at Christmas.

DingDongVerilyOnHigh · 19/12/2024 20:20

One.

Obviously.

DingDongVerilyOnHigh · 19/12/2024 20:21

Seven mince pies each is a bit gross isn't it?

MikeRafone · 19/12/2024 20:22

I’m not sure your clotted cream ratio to mince pies was correct?

2 tubs of clotted cream spread around 36 mince pies, seems on the thin side

di you lift the lids and plonk cream in between?

Between 4 it's actually 9 Grin

It's too many for me but if they're only small I can see how it happened

True.

One mince pie. 1/4 of a tub of clotted cream.

Is the ratio.

Clearly nobody in my family thinks it's gross!

The cream to pie ratio is skewed by the fact that ds2 doesn't like it, while ds1 could literally eat the tub with a spoon.

My OH had mince pies at a hotel recently, I had a nibble of one of them to try it as I sort of like mince pies but then sort of dont. It was the George hotel in Stamford, they were the best mince pies either of us had ever had. Genuinely good, not particularly sweet. He would have packed away more of them if he could have but you only got 2 on the plate

Not sure why someone is querying cream with a mince pie, who doesnt have a cream with a mince pie, also got to be clotted cream.

FeralNun · 19/12/2024 20:40

Switcher · 19/12/2024 17:25

What's with the cream? Is this a thing now, adding cream?

Eh? It’s always been a thing!

We favour squirty cream in this house. In fact DH only really eats a mince pie as a vehicle for cream!

OP, I have a recommendation if you have any marzipan left over from the cake - use it to top your next batch of pies - heavenly!

sprigatito · 19/12/2024 20:42

The recipe is nothing special btw, I use Tesco finest mincemeat with a bit of extra orange zest thrown in. The pastry is 600g plain flour, 300g salted butter, two large egg yolks and a good splash of milk. Don't over-knead the pastry and rest it in the fridge in an airtight bag before rolling. It comes out lovely and short and crispy.

male

when a teenager once eat a dozen hot cross buns in one sitting so I would imagine 8 mince pies would be a doddle lol

Mermaimum · 19/12/2024 21:12

I don’t normally comment. But i think you are you are definitely not being unreasonable. I hope you all had lovely afternoon.

Oops sorry. This is ‘Christmas thread’ lol. Anyway, i still think no one was unreasonable!

I've been told I must make another batch, only bigger this time 😂

Why you? If they like them so much they could make them themselves and scoff them all down in one go.

BESTAUNTB · 19/12/2024 21:18

Don’t like mince pies.

eight packets of Monster Munch would be eaten very quickly here though…. 😃

Is there a way of eating mince pies without cream?
