Clueless what to get my mum for Christmas- are you a 70 year old woman? What would you want?

She likes nice things, fancy things, should be easy enough to buy for but I'm just drawing a blank. Only definite nos are handbags or anything you wear on a shoulder, as she only has the use of one arm.

littlefireseverywhere · 12/12/2024 13:52

My mum I’m getting vouchers for a meal at a nice restaurant local to her.

Buddhalover · 12/12/2024 14:06

Well I'm 71 and I would like to receive an aray of things. My favourite perfume, nice underwear, jewellery. My list could be endless! Lol 😄

AdaColeman · 12/12/2024 14:19

Perfume
Cashmere cardigan or scarf
Beret & scarf
Posh hair brush & mirror
Orchid in a pot

What sort of budget have you got in mind?

I got a flying lesson, luggage tags and a new iPad case for my 72 year old mother.

MaryGreenhill · 12/12/2024 14:21

Have a look on TkMaxx they have some beautiful things.

I like your (& your mother's) style!

Aspinal of London have lots of nice ‘fancy’ home accessories, notebooks, makeup bags etc that are great gifts.

Cashmere cardigan, scarf, etc.

A fancy blanket for the house - Aran do gorgeous ones, Hermes if she likes to show off the logo’s!!!

My 70s female relative, one loves everything The White Company and also likes eating in so home decoration. I’ve got her a luxurious Christmas table runner.

My DM who’s a young 83 year old would love home made things from her grandchildren but also likes Adidas Gazelles, Lucy and Yak clothes, Uniqlo heat tech, her favourite perfume or hair thickening products. Tickets to a play or musical. Turquoise and silver jewellery but preferably necklaces.

saraclara · 12/12/2024 14:26

We (nearly) 70 year old are as diverse as any other age group. These threads do my head in.

You know your mum, we don't!

bookbook · 12/12/2024 14:27

Your mum sounds amazing! I have a beloved friend who would also fit that description. She's 87; I'm 35 and she's more fun than anyone else I know.

Very hard to think of gifts based on age alone!

Rocknrollstar · 12/12/2024 14:49

I want one of those rechargeable heated hairbrushes that are all over the internet.

I understand that, and hope I didn't offend. I'm not trying to lump all 70 year olds in together, just thought there might be someone here who had received an amazing gift/asked for an amazing gift that I hadn't thought of! I'm not massively close to my mum, I love her but I don't spend loads of time with her, so want to get her something nice but was just drawing a bit of a blank.

Some great suggestions here, thanks all.

Thank you! My DM often says she doesn’t want anything.

I’ve so far got her a Superdry varsity long sleeved top and tartan pyjamas she saw in Primarks window the other day when we met up for coffee and shopping.

Is it a mam thing. My mam says not to get her anything

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 12/12/2024 15:28

Nothing, except maybe a box of Maltesers, or perhaps a bottle of M&S mulled wine or Buck’s Fizz. I’d far rather they save their money. I certainly don’t want any more ‘stuff’ and TBH I’d prefer to choose any clothes or toiletries myself.

Defiantlynot41 · 12/12/2024 15:43

For anyone interested in the hair thickening suggestions, I've been really impressed with the results from using the Philip Kingsley Density range. Also (sadly as it is ruinously expensive) the K18 leave in Molecular Repair product that came in the Space NK advent. I went from sceptical to devotee in a week! Not especially for thickening but has worked wonders on my fine dyed hair without overload

I got my Dad a flying lesson when he was 72 and he was over the moon (not literally 😉). He wanted to fly when he did National Service but they discovered he was colour blind and he couldn't. It was like dream come true for him and worth every penny.

Now I'm 69 and I'm struggling to think of what I want. I know I'm getting walking boots which is what I wanted. I like perfume but don't want someone else buying me underwear or a cashmere cardigan. I make my own clothes but usually buy my fabrics and yarn in out of the way places. An event might be good like a ballet but they'd have to check with me first. I like really, really dark chocolate DH got me a bar of 100% cocoa solids last year which was better than any fancy box of chocolates.

I think I'm quite difficult to buy for.

ginslinger · 12/12/2024 15:59

I'm approaching70 - I'd like some new running socks, a new running water proof jacket. I'd also like some Jo Malone cologne, some novels, a subscription to Private Eye, a statement necklace and some silver hoop earrings. I'd be pretty pissed off with vouchers. Also a Liberty scarf. If money is tight then I'd be happy with a paperback book

msbevvy · 12/12/2024 16:02

I'm almost that age and the only thing that I have actually asked for is Lego.

Sorry. Having a crappy birthday today, and feeling very old and grumpy. 🙁
I'm sure you'll find something to suit your mum among the kind suggestions

To be fair people also ask what they are getting there 15/16/17 year olds or their husbands or their young adult kids etc and non of them are a homogenous group either!
But I'm sorry you are having a rough day, and I hope you have a better weekend Flowers
