Clueless what to get my mum for Christmas- are you a 70 year old woman? What would you want?

She likes nice things, fancy things, should be easy enough to buy for but I'm just drawing a blank. Only definite nos are handbags or anything you wear on a shoulder, as she only has the use of one arm.

A heated throw, you can get them in lots of different styles these days.

SeatonCarew · 12/12/2024 17:51

@saraclara , wishing you a happy birthday, and more importantly, a splendid coming year. I always value your contributions, even when I sometimes don't agree with them. That's the sign of a great contributor. 💕🥂

Laska2Meryls · 12/12/2024 18:05

I'm not quite that age but not far off, and for my very recent birthday I received a recycled x-ray silver bangle .. Am utterly thrilled with it.. You can get all sorts of x-ray silver jewellery from Royal Mint . Maybe she'd like something from there?

Almostwelsh · 12/12/2024 18:15

My mum is older, but so far I've got her a jigsaw puzzle, posh chocolates, a couple of books in the historical fiction genre and a photo book of her grandchildren

We (nearly) 70 year old are as diverse as any other age group. These threads do my head in.

You know your mum, we don't!

Quite!

CatrionaBalfour · 12/12/2024 18:21

My sister is 71. She wears DMs, drinks Guinness and goes to gigs. She also does all her own DIY so I'm getting her a new toolbox for Christmas.

OMGitsnotgood · 12/12/2024 18:28

A long necklace she can put over her head with one hand? Ie no clasps to fiddle with.

Personally, I would like: a voucher for a facial/massage/a restaurant/afternoon tea; ; nicer pjs than I would buy for myself.
Always love a new cookery book.

olderbutwiser · 12/12/2024 18:33

Not quite 70 yet but I want experiences and consumables, not things. A small amount of something really good is much better than a big amount of crap.

I’m 56 and would love all of those.

I would also add silk eye mask/silk pillow case.

Amen to that!

@saraclara
Hope the coming year is better than your birthday! But HBD nonetheless.

Soluckyinlove · 12/12/2024 18:45

My husband says the best present he has ever had was the flying lesson I treated him to, in his eighties. I actually took him to the airfield to book it as I wanted to be sure that he could actually get into the plane. My nearest flying school, Sherburn, Yorkshire, couldn't have been nicer. .... When he went up, I was in the back seat with my camera! He was in seventh heaven.

My family tend to buy me either chocolate or red wine, safe choices. I would hate lotions, potions, candles, scarves, gloves and most food as I cook most of our meals from scratch.

I remember the present my gran appreciated most at about 70 was a large delivery of coal.

UtterlyOtterly · 12/12/2024 18:50

My 82 year old friend is getting a new wetsuit. I am not far off 70 and would like a garden spade and some very good quality secateurs.

Possibly none of that is helpful for your mother.

Would a subscription to something work? I had a subscription to Slightly Foxed a couple of years ago and loved it. If she reads I think Persiphone books used to have a subscription type thing.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/12/2024 19:17

I'm 62 - like books, good junk jewellery, nice perfume, magazine subs( woman and home or good housekeeping)

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/12/2024 19:19

Fresh flower subscription.

junebirthdaygirl · 12/12/2024 19:19

'M not there yet but my favourite presents are flowers/ plants/ pots for for my patio ..you get the drift. I would also like a magazine subscription as l only read them in the hairdressers.

faffadoodledo · 12/12/2024 19:23

I'm 12 years off 70, and all being well I'd like a new tennis racket and tennis lessons. 🤞

I can't imagine wanting cashmere scarves or fancy things. But as this thread shows, all 70 year olds are different!

Yes but some older people prefer consumables as gifts because they may be struggling to dispose of a lifetime of clutter.

I'm nearly 70 and can manage clasps perfectly well. I wouldn't want any of those things apart from the PJs. We're all different.

Did you read the OP? That suggestion had nothing to do with age.

. I wouldn't want any of those things apart from the PJs. We're all different.
Indeed, but the OP aid looking for ideas and it is up to her to assess what she thinks her Mum would like. I have friends who eg strongly dislike afternoon tea, others who love them etc. Am sure the OP will be able to make a judgement for her Mum.

Which is why, as an almost 70 year old myself, it's hard to answer the OP's question. We don't all want the same things.

@avaritablevampire @TruthThatsHardAsSteel @SeatonCarew and @mathanxiety thank you so much for your lovely posts! You've cheered up my day and restored my faith in Mumsnetters! That was so kind of you. ♥️

I'm only 69 , 😁 but on my list is a new phone cover that has a pretty design on it , with a built a card/money holder , a new pair of embroidery scissors ( mine have gone walkabout ) , leather gardening gloves , a denman hair brush ( always used them , basic black they now do some with lovely designs on too ) new gloves

It was pointed out on TV recently that keeping your cards and cash in the back of your phone just makes it very easy for thieves to clean you out totally. it's incredibly annoying - but it's true!

AutoP1lot · 12/12/2024 20:32

My mum is and has requested Mugler Angel perfume and a snooze band.

Redburnett · 12/12/2024 20:35

A nice outing with DD, or a nice meal, but definitely nothing material that i have to keep and look at and never bin for sentimental reasons.
