I KNOW it’s not to everyone’s taste, I KNOW people could/will pile on about excess and budgets and gluttony, greed, and the spirit of baby Jesus himself … but I’m nosy and want to know 😁 I’m also here for the very divisive annual Christmas Fridge bunfight in a couple of weeks.

I’ll go first.

Quite an assumption people have wider families that buy for them!

Yes but it’s so boring to have to constantly put disclaimers on every single post on mumsnet covering different scenarios in case people call you out. It’s implicit in my post that that’s who I am referring to. I am not referring to the people who I’m not referring to 🙄

Majority of people on this thread posting 15+ gifts of tat for each child are not doing so due to their lack of wider family.

Honestly I think I bought too much. I spent £230 on DS. I bloody love Christmas and I love buying presents, especially love doing the stocking, but now ive written it all out it seems excessive. I buy throughout the year to spread the cost and buy during prime day/black friday and I just sold a load of DS old baby stuff/toys and made £450 so I think it's ok. I'm from a small family too so apart from my son, only have 4 other people to buy for. My DH and I are having a small stocking and a jumper each.

So boring putting disclaimers on…. Like I did to stop people like you commenting about the fact it’s too much? So your disclaimers are not worth it but mine were and were very clear that exactly the type of poster I was referring to was you. People have different situations, more money, less money, wider family, solo parents, working parents, home schoolers, brought up in an orphanage. Who knows?

I love getting them things they think you can't manage. Like sold out tickets.

I bought mine a PS3 years ago (the ps4 had just come out so there were loads of 2nd hand ones). I told them I couldn't afford it, which they were fine with. The looks on their faces when they opened it. Best Christmas ever.

Stop derailing, you’re spoiling the thread for everyone else. No one cares about your disdain over the size of their children’s present list which is none of your business to judge. Everyone is just happy that their children are going to be happy because that’s what Christmas is about - happiness. Take yourself elsewhere please.

Where did you get the Minecraft chess set please?

Menkind. In truth, it’s very expensive for what it is but he loves both Minecraft and chess so it’ll be thoroughly enjoyed and well played with so on balance we thought it was worth it. ☺️

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 09/12/2024 22:59

I love reading what other people have bought their DC. I'd sadly never post my list as others would have a fit. However I enjoy seeing all the different types of presents children ask for and how it varies and gifts parents are so excited to give, as they just know their DC will love. It’s comforting to know so many children will wake up to at least one thoughtful gift.

You’re very welcome. These threads are great for getting ideas if you’re stuck or struggling for ideas. I got DS a cheap lock picking kit last year from Amazon that I’d seen someone else suggest on a similar thread and he played with it for hours on Christmas Day and beyond so that was a nice idea that I’d never have thought of.

Superworm24 · 09/12/2024 23:03

I love these threads. Mine is still a baby, so is only getting a wooden shape sorter and some wooden blocks I got from vinted. I think they were around £4. He loves ripping paper so I will make sure to wrap them well.

TheresAHoleInTheNet · 09/12/2024 23:15

This is so interesting. Such a variety :) I'll add mine for anyone interested - we live in a not very easy part of Africa, and it's hard to get things here. So we have to be a bit creative! Delivery isn't safe, as most things get stolen, so we're a bit stuck unless we courier, which is very pricy.

My kids are getting:

  • A hammer and nails (we have a hardware store at least, and a son who loves to build things out of firewood!)
  • Pencils
  • Nice notebooks (we homeschool and use very boring brown exercise books usually)
  • A small bag of stones (nothing valuable, just a local guy selling pretty stones, which my kids love lining up, washing, swapping with each other etc)
  • I'm sewing them each a new pair of shorts from nice fabric
  • and we got a little toy unicorn imported from the UK for our youngest. It cost a small fortune, but they don't often get new/ special toys, so I think it'll cause much excitement. I hope....!

Oh, and a bar of Cadburys chocolate each, because it's the best we can get locally, and we don't usually want to splash out on the cost of it for regular consumption..!

What I'm most excited about for each kid, descending age from teen to toddler:
-Driving lessons
-Private cooking lessons (they're ready for more advanced lessons & want to learn a cuisine neither DH or I know much about)
-First smart phone of their own
-A hammock for their bedroom and noise cancelling headphones
-Starter dirt bike & tools
-An indoor climbing structure, wall climbing pegs, and crash mats
-A massive dress up chest full of thrifted items & hand-me-downs I've been collecting all year, plus some painted fabric backdrops an artistic relative has made

We try to keep quantity low, but they'll also each get 2-3 smaller items from us, a medium sized santa gift, and stocking treats.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 09/12/2024 23:31

This is from me, plus various grandparents and relatives. They all give money and I make the purchases. I've spent £200 per child, plus we've been given £130 per child extra so far. My dad will give money too but its always random amounts and after Christmas so I just give them that to spend. I also don't tot up stockings. So that's extra on top.

LOL movie set play set

They all have a switch to share, plus 3 games each as the main present. DSD has some more gifts to add yet.

Then there is my eldest...
Ds22

His is mostly food and money!
A gift bag full of his favourite foods, from doritoes to coffee sachets!
Big tub of Haribo
Rum and glass set
Oreo selection box
Incense sticks
Vans socks
Deadpool game controller holder
Lynx gift set (as requested by him!)
£150 in cash.

He doesn't have a Stocking. Also relatives don't give money for him anymore. But he does get as much again off his dad where as my younger kids don't, so it does even out. Also, his grandparents have somehow sourced 1k and have given it to him for Christmas as he's the prodigal grandchild (their only one to ever go to uni, and despite not having a penny all their lives somehow give him large cash gifts every now and then). So he's very happy 🤣.
