My sons just had a bday so won't be getting anything big. He had an expensive bday present (Vr) he's getting a stand/charger for it and bits and pieces. A new card game we thought he'd like we found in menkind. And bubble tea etc nothing hugely exciting!

StrawberryWater · 07/12/2024 17:15

Present or dinner?

Present wise my son (10, so a little younger) is getting a laptop, a desk and a new gaming chair. He's also getting an echo dot and a few little craft bits.

We were tempted to get him a metal detector but decided to save it for his birthday instead as nobody wants to stand on a cold beach looking for loose change!

present 😁

12 yo ds is getting a phone (at last) and some computer peripherals that dh cares about has agreed with him. Otherwise it'll be stocking bits like a new hoodie, pjs, hot chocolate packs and v bucks.

mambojambodothetango · 07/12/2024 20:17

Trainers he found on Ebay, a couple of sports items and PJs. Plus a copy of The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole!

user2848502016 · 07/12/2024 20:58

My 13 year old DD hasn't asked for one big thing this year but a list of perfume, jeans, a bag etc

PumpkinPie2016 · 07/12/2024 21:26

My son is 11 so slightly younger.

He is getting a switch and Mario kart deluxe 8 - his first console. He has been asking for aged and hasn't asked for anything else so I have bought it.

I have explained that it is an expensive gift and he therefore won't have a big pile of presents - he understood and still wanted it.

To go with it, he currently has a squishmallow (he loves them!), a small lego set (racing car) and a daft throw the avocado game which he will enjoy. I'll probably buy him a nice book and some pj's (he could do with some new ones anyway).

His stocking has always just been small bits - apple/tangerine/chocolate plus something like pencils/small fun toys. So he will have that too.

I am very fortunate that I only have one child so I don't need to worry about equalling up the spending across children!

itsalwaysthesame · 07/12/2024 21:52

12yo daughter has got Hyde park tickets to see Olivia Rodrigo (very bloody expensive as had to buy resale tickets), also some non expensive clothing, beauty products & some chocolates.

We are also going to Bluestone for a long weekend between Christmas and new year.

MrDarlingtonsPie · 07/12/2024 21:54

Clothes, trainers, aftershave, gaming stuff, new sports kit. The presents are less fun and more £££ when they reach this age, I find!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 07/12/2024 22:14

Lego tuxedo cat
Some books

Stocking will have bubble tea stuff, magnets (he's obsessed) and chocolate.

SuiGeneris · 07/12/2024 22:18

Surprised at how much these kids are getting and wondering whether perhaps my DH is more in line with general public views than I am.
Our DS (12) is getting a hoodie, a photo album of something special he did this summer, an upgraded mobile contract and a swatch.
I come from a family where the average present tends to be a book or two, so the above feels extravagant to me, but judging from other posts perhaps it is not?

Samandytimlucypeterolivia · 07/12/2024 23:21

Dd12 is getting

Kylie Jenner lip gloss
sol de janerio pink set

From ExH, he's getting a driving experience and a football jersey .

A tennis racquet and trainers plus books and stocking bits and pieces.

snowmanshoes · 08/12/2024 09:11

DD is getting

Trainers
Joggers/hoodie combo
jeans
a beauty storage thing on wheels (Asda £18!) with beauty things in - which are mix of a few spendy bits from Sephora and benefit but also filled out with cheaper items from Superdrug and face flannels etc - I know she’ll love this and I’m really pleased with the storage unit as it makes it look a much more substantial present and hopefully will help her keep it tidy!
Pandora charm she chose
perfume

I’ll add some chocs and a few more bits and bobs as I don’t do actusl
stocking fillers but she did have new satin jammies December 1st

When I was growing up we got probably around 10-12 presents each, including a new outfit (some MNers see this as the ultimate act of child cruelty but I loved it, i loved putting my new outfit on on Christmas day and we only got new clothes at Christmas/if we desperately needed something), bubble bath, a DVD or a CD (sign of the times😂) , a selection box, etc. We were never spoiled with expensive gifts, and I'm so grateful for that. My childhood best friend was showered with hundreds of pounds worth of gifts her parents couldn't afford and now has no concept of the value of money as an adult, and still gets showered with hundreds of pounds worth of gifts as an adult, that her parents still can't afford. I'm not saying that all children who are bought expensive gifts will grow up to be spoiled/not learn the value of money, but I don't think it does them any favours. Plus a lot of it is needless consumerism, which the world could do with a lot less of.

Throughthebluebells · 08/12/2024 09:37

I will be sticking to the rhyme:

Something I want
Something I need
Something to wear
Something to read

I have done this for a few years and found it useful as I am otherwise prone to over-indulgence!

The wants and needs can be big or small. For my DS, the need is the biggest this year so the want will be small, but for DD, the wear is usually the biggest present.

As they get older, I'm more inclined to give them activities or days out so have added a 'Something to do' to the list'. Also, we have a joint family present of a board game or similar that is opened after lunch and played on Christmas Day and usually on subsequent days too if it is a success.

EasyComfortDishes · 08/12/2024 09:44

New phone (to him, as got it off Backmarket)
Loads of clothes from Zara/Hollister/Uniqlo. Suddenly he’s shot up and nothing fits and he’s also suddenly into how he looks!

loads and loads of books
posh phone case
set of weights and a rack
punchbag
Outsmarred board game
keepsake chess set
Beanie
touch screen gloves
casio g shock watch

this is between Xmas and birthday and from all family, just including in case it’s useful

Everyone does Christmas and gift giving differently, some will do bigger birthdays than Christmas.
People's budgets vary.
Others see posh trainer's and new bikes as something to be purchased when needed rather than a Christmas gift.
