Surprised at how much these kids are getting and wondering whether perhaps my DH is more in line with general public views than I am.
Our DS (12) is getting a hoodie, a photo album of something special he did this summer, an upgraded mobile contract and a swatch.
I come from a family where the average present tends to be a book or two, so the above feels extravagant to me, but judging from other posts perhaps it is not?

You do you

Out of interest, when does your DS get new clothes/bike/hobbie equipment/craft items/etc?

Mine get them whenever they need them. No point waiting until Christmas if his helmet stopped fitting in july

SuiGeneris · 09/12/2024 21:31

@Fernleigh22 DS does not have a bike and generally wears hand-me-downs from his brother or cousins. If he needs something new in addition to that I buy it when he needs it.

His main hobby at the moment is gymnastics and we pay for that as we are happy that he is improving his coordination and stamina. If he wants a new game for the PlayStation he has to buy it by saving pocket or birthday money (which he saves with us and gets interest on).

PandaChopChop · 09/12/2024 21:37

Both DC have got a game, a book, pj's, chocolate, some cheap stocking fillers (lip gloss, wind up toys, fluffy socks) and DS got an echo pop in black Friday sale.
And gig tickets from Santa. Both had fairly big birthday spends/parties this year so I've dialled it down this Christmas. ( i say that... still spent quite a bit of money!)

Surely your DS would like some new clothes of his own?

But as I said in my initial response to you everyone does Christmas differently. And to many a PlayStation itself would have been a Christmas gift at some point. And games too.
You probably give a fair amount to your DC over the year compared to what other children might get.

I will be sticking to the rhyme:

Something I want
Something I need
Something to wear
Something to read

I have done this for a few years and found it useful as I am otherwise prone to over-indulgence!

The wants and needs can be big or small. For my DS, the need is the biggest this year so the want will be small, but for DD, the wear is usually the biggest present.

As they get older, I'm more inclined to give them activities or days out so have added a 'Something to do' to the list'. Also, we have a joint family present of a board game or similar that is opened after lunch and played on Christmas Day and usually on subsequent days too if it is a success.

I like this. Some of these lists are incredulous

I'm a single mum my kids will get 2 ITEMS EACH.

MangshorJhol · 09/12/2024 21:51

2 Rubik’s cubes, a sweatshirt, 4-5 books and a board game.
Then with his younger sibling he’s getting another board game (family one).

Little sibling is getting a Lego set, a science kit or two, books and a board game.

We don’t do stockings- where we live Christmas isn’t as big as it is in London especially if it’s not ‘your’ festival.

SuiGeneris · 09/12/2024 22:32

@Needanewname42

He does get new clothes of his own when he needs them but he prefers not to receive clothes as presents.

And yes, unfortunately the PlayStation was a gift from his grandmother, which I did not want him to have. It has caused more arguments than everything else we own put together.

But I agree, everyone does Christmas differently and this thread is a very interesting window into different approaches to it.

RaspberryBeretxx · 09/12/2024 22:40

Nothing huge this year as he had a new x box last year.

extra storage device for x box
heated throw
hot choc maker
fluffy pjs from next
hollister hoodie
usual stocking bits of chocs, shower gel etc.

from others:
adidas trainers (can’t remember which but similar to gazelles)

pinkgrevillea · 10/12/2024 01:05

I do spend a bit at Christmas but don't shop or buy stuff for them at any other time, only new shoes when they need them. They aren't interested in clothes, we get books from the library, we don't shop as an activity and I hate clutter and buying stuff that won't get used so Christmas/birthdays are the only times they get new things really.

Like the idea of activities too - I have found a show that I think we will all like that I might buy tickets for.

I'm also really impressed on here to see people buying secondhand and will try and donate some kids books to charity shop before Christmas and hopefully they will appear under a few trees.

DisruptiveCumin · 10/12/2024 05:34

Squishmallows
Books
A Taylor Swift poster made by me
Jewelry making kit

Humphreyshead · 10/12/2024 10:44

Coaching sessions for their chosen sport. Some clothes. Something to read. Family board game. Bit of Lego. Perfume/make up/jewellery.

MrDarlingtonsPie · 10/12/2024 17:02

I’ve got two teen sons who could not be more different. One could spend all day on clothes, trainers and fragrance so I have indulged him a little in what he likes, taken him shopping and let him decide with a few surprises. He has a couple of inexpensive sporty hobbies, gym memberships and loves aftershave so have picked up a few extra bits I know he will be pleased with.

The other could not care less about fashion and wouldn’t see clothes as a gift. He still needs decent clothes, shoes, aftershave throughout the year so I buy these as and when and he also has a few fairly expensive hobbies and trips. He collects something in particular so I get him a few specified pieces, wouldn’t even attempt to guess as I’d get it slightly wrong but I’ve had free rein on his stocking.

I feel as though the first son has more this year but think this is just the way it’s going to be now as they’re such different people with different costs throughout the year. They’ve both reached an age where they have decent tech, laptops, bikes, consoles, headphones etc thankfully.

Where I am charity shops turn over of kids stock is very high, so alot of people seem to be buying second hand. And I saw a thing on social media saying to people to consider donating before christmas so people can buy for presents. Rather than them being overstocked in January when people won't be buying so much.

Definitely better for the planet and often with things like books many children/teen ones are practically new. I know most of the ones I've bought dont even look read, obviously it is trickier if they want new releases or more obscure books but I've had some luck on vinted for those for dds.

SootspriteSearcher · 11/12/2024 09:22

I would like to remind people who are shocked by large lists that some children will only receive presents from their parents. My dds lists are larger however they won't be getting gifts to open from anyone else.

And I rarely buy through the year, apart from clothes they need or the odd book. They don't get huge amounts of pocket money either. So I generally spoil them at Christmas.

DeathStarCanteenGal · 16/12/2024 19:00

DD (13) is getting an iPad, cos her existing one just died, some Converse high tops (from Vinted) jelly cats, snow fairy stuff from lush, some clothes and the final 3 books in the Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children series

Everyone does it differently and I’m sure your son will too when he’s older.
I grew up in a household where Christmas presents were sparse, some monetary related the other just not hugely child focused. Both parents worked in our family business so Christmas was stocking , church , lunch and they worked.

I go the opposite with Christmas , and I go all out . Not totally ridiculous, however use it to treat my children and make them feel so extra special. Totally is an over compensation from my childhood, which I’m starkly aware of!

Soccermumamir · 17/12/2024 07:24

Ds 11 (12 in January) has an Oled Switch and headset for his main presents. He's last headset has just working and he's had his other switch for years and is about to conk out 😂

Needanewname42 · 17/12/2024 07:59

@Soccermumamir Are you aware there are rumours that Switch 2 will be released early in the new year?

Id have a proper Google if I were you and maybe see if you could hold of until birthday or at 11/12 give them the choice of waiting until the new one comes out.
