Mine is mid 70ies, likes gardening, sailing/the seaside, is still quite stylish etc. Ex nurse.

In the past I've done bits of jewellery, special plants/planters, pictures etc.

But I'm stuck this year and she is the last recipient I need to buy for! I was wondering about a nice candle set or something, from Potts or similar.

Anyone have any inspired ideas?

A new fit bit versa as hers is giving up the ghost, my sister didn’t know what to get and so is going half’s. I’ve got her a gift set of shower gels she likes, a personalised calendar I get her every year and also got a Luther vandross vinyl on pre order which is due out the 13th December.

My mum is 68 and dad 79. I've got them tickets to see cirque du soleil at the royal Albert hall

If she enjoys sea and sailing why not buy her a swim suit or wetsuit from Finistere? Their spring suits are absolutely perfect, 4mm no legs long sleeves and front zip. Environmentally friendly Yulex, ladt well and look fab.

Do you all get on with your mothers?

I don't get along with mine at all, sadly

No I don’t. Got mine a heated throw, chocolates and may get her a calendar.

WhoDatNow · 06/12/2024 08:14

Got mine champagne afternoon tea garden tour at Highgrove for her and a friend (or me)

If she's a gardener really good sharp gardening tools are great. I've asked for darlac secateurs for Christmas. Even more important to have sharp tools as you get older as it makes the work easier.

My mum is 85. I enjoy photography and she is always telling me how good I am so I have had one of my photos taken in her part of the country printed in canvas and framed. I chose one with colours that will go in her bedroom well.

As well as that I have got her a knee blanket for watching TV as she doesn't always put the heating on very high.

Beautiful perfume, set from Clarins and might get her a Chloe bag she has had her eyes on. No one more deserving than your own mum 🌸

Mother - a nice top she's seen and a bag

Mother in law - restraining order if she carries on being a monster in law!

I've got my mum the Nigel Slater 'A Cooks Book' which is a collection of all his essential recipes from throughout his life. I'm hoping she will like that!

Then a bottle of M&S tiramisu Irish cream, some almond caramel chocolates a tin of blonde chocolate covered pecans. They are going away to a holiday cottage over Christmas so I thought some edible treats would go down well.

CookieMonster28 · 06/12/2024 10:08

For MiL we focus on experience gifts as she has so much stuff. Gift vouchers for a very nice restaurant she wouldn’t usually splash out on herself or for a hotel spa etc. Then smaller gifts like nice travel toiletries for an upcoming holiday etc.

Shes nearly 80 and not as mobile as she was but is very sociable. All she really wants is to spend time with us. Shes lovely.

She used to love the photo calendar of dd we’d make every year but teen dd is too self conscious now. Going to try to persuade her to give a framed pic.

My mum, 82, asked for Lego flowers!

They're wonderful - DD13 received them and we have kept adding to them with smaller kits (sunflowers, blossom branches). Hope your Mum enjoys as well.

Things that have gone down well with DM and MIL:

  • magazine subscription (Good Food or Gardener's world for Mum, crafting one or geanealogy one for MIL)
  • membership - RHS, National Trust, RSPB, local theatre so she got free tickets and advance bookings
  • Turtle Doves or similar cashmere gloves and scarves
  • Arena flowers subscription for monthly flowers by post
  • air fryer
  • jewellery with the names of their grandchildren on
  • sculpture for the garden
  • bird feeding station and book of garden birds
  • kindle so she could read things with a larger text size an not need her glasses (which she hates)
  • getting all the old cine-camera footage converted to DVDs so she could watch it on the tv
