"Pot luck" present for middle aged woman

A group of friends I meet up with regularly have decided to do a "pot luck" for Christmas presents i.e. like Secret Santa, but you are not given a specific person to buy for, you just need to buy a generic present that will be assigned at random.

I hate these things with a passion because I can never think of anything to get, while everyone else seems to manage to get well thought out unique gifts.

So hoping someone has some good suggestions for me?
The group consists of women from mid 40s - mid 60s; and budget is max of £10.

See, that book is a prime example of what different tastes people have. It would be charity-shopped immediately.

None of us reads these kind of books, we are either a bloody thriller, crime, historical or indie-romance book household.

I would still go for chocolate or wine.

But in a group of friends, you may well have similar tastes in books? I could easily choose a book that most of my secret santa friends would enjoy reading. And it wouldn't be a bloody thriller or a romance.

I’ve seen things I bought for one relative (a stunning H&M home vase and a cushion with lovely words I bought for a now late 30s relative and the cushion she loved but the radio silence re the vase meant it was probably charity shopped. Ah well.

Someone gave me that, but I thought the smell was awful! Just really unpleasant.

No toiletries or candles

I'd like a notebook or bullet journal, a nice tote bag from a bookshop or similar, or a lovely Christmas tree ornament.

Yes but the issue is that it is not a Secret Santa but a potluck. So even in a group of friends you will have a variety of tastes. Finding one fits all is really difficult as we found out on this thread.

I am so grateful that we stopped doing friend presents or Secret Santas, it was more stressful and got expensive than it was intended.

To be honest I hate it and would politely decline to take part if I could think of a way of doing so without it sounding scrooge like.

I've just remembered that the gift I got last year was put in a drawer and never taken out again :) So I'm probably overthinking.

Just regift that gift in that case.

CrowleyKitten · 06/12/2024 23:03

fluffy socks, a facemask, a giftcard for somewhere people generally like, bottle of fizzy, some chocolates.

things that are easy to regift if it's not their thing

I actually have a bullet vibrator I keep in my bag for neck, shoulder and back pain. it's FAR too vigorous to put anywhere near my undercarriage, but it's great for aches and pains.

Useful Tote Bag from Waitrose/JL

I'd go for a good small umbrella, a decent reusable shopping bag that folds down small, a bottle of decent local cold pressed rapeseed oil (my mum can't eat olive oil as it makes her throw up; really good decent thick yellow grapeseed oil is good for you and tastes delicious, very nutty), a handbag organiser or mini organiser/make up bag from Mia Tui or some of their packing cubes.
