I went to M&S earlier and picked up a pack of mushroom vol au vents . They do reminded me of Christmas parties from my childhood.
I thought it would be fun to do a retro Christmas buffet this year . What things do you remember having for n Christmas buffets as a child ?

We did this a few years ago, we got all our friends to bring a dish from their childhood Christmas, there was:
Black Forest gateau
pawn vol au vents
sausage cheese & pineapple hedgehog
Trifle
sausage rolls
open sandwiches

My auntie used to fill a bought sponge flan case with tinned fruit and jelly. Always loved that.

I know it's not really buffet foot but I'm still saying vienetta!

My childhood was abroad in a hot country. 1 grandmother would always make a cold, savoury rice salad. The rice was always either under done and almost crunchy or so overcooked it was mushy. She'd add raw peppers, which I can't stand, tinned pineapple and glace cherries!

Possible other ingrediants but those are the ones that stick in my mind.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 30/11/2024 21:36

Figs and dates that you pick from the box with a plastic fork.

Tinned salmon sandwiches on white bread

Mr Kipling iced fondants

Marshmallow tea cakes

Coconut snowballs

Witchlite · 30/11/2024 21:42

Does anyone remember pots of salmon paste? In sandwiches with cucumber.

Ralphiemia · 30/11/2024 21:49

How about celery cut in half and filled with primula cream cheese, I loved it back in the day.

Fireworknight · 30/11/2024 21:54

Starters -

You can still get them, also crab paste and sardine & tomato. Yum! on crusty bread 😀

Oh my gosh, I'd forgotten about that! Served with single cream so the sponge went mushy.

StrawberryWater · 30/11/2024 21:56

You've got to have a black forest gateau and a Walls Vienetta!

Mine used to do like yule log but it was beef mince covered in mashed potato.

I take it that's a no lol.

It was served as a main, it wasn't for desert.

Babycham in a proper Babycham glass!
