SIL gift. Which would you prefer?

Looking for some advice for buying my SIL a gift. She is very nice but also quite difficult to get really close to so I'm afraid all gift ideas I have for her are quite generic. She goes to the gym a lot, she loves her cat, she likes plants I believe and has a sweet tooth. Bought her a jumper for the gym last year.

As generic gifts go, this is what I have so far in terms of ideas:

  1. A rituals gift set (posh shower gel, candle and body cream etc)
  2. A kittens/cat wall calendar and some posh chocolates
  3. Nice pyjamas

Are these all just a bit crap?
Which would you prefer? Any other ideas? Budget up to about £40

What about the rituals set and a voucher for her fave coffee shop? Might be a nice post gym treat!

Do you know where she gets her hair or nails done? A voucher for there could be a lovely gift!

LittleBoPeepHasLostHerShit · 29/11/2024 15:40

Just the chocolates. Charbonnel et Walker, Marc de Champagne truffles! Cat calendar is too childish for an adult.

She can thank Mumsnet for saving her from the cat calendar 😂

Was thinking this too. The box is nice but the bits I'm sure she would use are the shower gel and candle. Less sure about the body cream and body scrub.

I’ve found that stores will gift wrap for you if you choose individual items anyway which I think is worth it even if there’s a charge as it means nothing is wasted. Plus I have fun choosing the individual bits!

I love my cat but definitely don’t want a calendar of him or other cats 😂

Elf36 · 29/11/2024 15:50

She is (in the most charming way) slightly obsessed with her cats but I totally get the point that doesn't necessarily mean you want a full on cat wall calendar! 😂

What about a voucher for a restaurant? That is always my go to and I know I would much prefer a night not cooking over a calendar/body wash etc.

Good idea. It reminds me of a couple of times I've sent my son and DIL a subscription to "the spicery" and my friend who was a bit unwell at the time a subscription to same company. But I chose because I know my son/DIL enjoy cooking, and my friend's husband enjoys cooking and she'd had about a dozen bouquets of flowers and I wanted to send something practical her husband could use quickly to make them a meal (I was too far away to go round with a meal to give over unfortunately).

Gift giving is a tricky business!

Amazon voucher would do me, then I can get something I need or like. Hope you're reading this, lovely SiL but purveyor of things I never want....

Gift giving is a tricky business!

It is but I feel it’s only on Mumsnet that people seem to be offended by almost all gifts. IRL I think most people are generally grateful for what they receive.

Letmegohome · 29/11/2024 15:57

One example... Again personally I'd be horrified!

Not to be disagreeable or anything, but an Amazon voucher would be a nightmare for me. I try as best as possible to avoid that company that pays hardly any tax in the UK.

BeaLola · 29/11/2024 16:01

For me it's a no to the calendar and Ritud (sorry) - I'm a login and potion lover but I do t like Rituals .

How about Neom mini pod

I have just bought sone bits from Wildsmiths which I'm pleased with and Aesop hand wash - but then again to sone hand wash would be boring

I do love a book -ask your brother /husband depending on who she is related to

BarnacleBeasley · 29/11/2024 16:02

honestly, though OP, if my SIL bought me a lovely gift which I could tell she'd put thought into, I'd be really touched and grateful even if I didn't like it that much.(Though I get that you do want her to like it!)

Get a picture of her cat - hand drawn by somebody who does pet portraits. Maybe an experience? Like a voucher to a cat cafe if you have one locally?

Fair enough, another voucher then? I find it hard to think under pressure re gifts for me, and also buy stuff when I want it so al hard to buy for, and prefer to spend when I want something. I get your point of principle though.

I have two cats, love them dearly, and would really really not like this.

Haven’t RTFT but Sweatty Betty has Black Friday 30% off everything.

Are you serious about the cat portrait?

I know someone who received a gin club membership which they loved ( obviously not suitable for everyone) every month received a (decent) sized bottle of gin, a mixer and fancy snacks
Not sure of pricing, but could you share with someone else ?

It’s about £40 a month.

Letmegohome · 29/11/2024 16:16

@ThatIsNotMyNameSoWhyAreYouCallingMeThat wow! That's a lot more than I realised ( I should have googled before suggesting)!

I am with you on that. I once bought my very beloved MIL a framed picture she had gone on about for years that she really liked after discussing with DH to push the boat out on budget for her that year to get it for her. She immediately said she didn't like/want it and to take it back and give her the money. I was crestfallen. I said, we can't return it because we chose the picture and got it specially framed and it's non-returnable. She made us take it out her house. After that, I just gave her money at Christmas. But if you observe the person's interests/what they buy others, I now realise you can get a feeling for what the recipient would like
