Desperately searching for a certain mug for DM (aged 83)

DM has broken her favourite mug and wants a replacement for Christmas… I have searched EVERYWHERE for a replacement and after a google image search, can only find it sold on a wholesale basis. Urgh!

At the age of 83, she really doesn’t want a lot…and I’m so desperate to find one…or even two.

The wholesale places won’t send me a sample and want a 10,000 piece minimum order… Urgh again.

I originally bought it from a gifty kind of farm shop in Shropshire years ago but I cannot - for the life of me - find ones to purchase online in ones or twos….

so, in desperation I thought I’d ask if the power of MN (which is spread far and wide) could keep an eye out during their Christmas shopping endeavours and if you see any for sale to let me know.

They’re porcelain with clear glazed stars. Think they also come in a hearts version which would be fine too. About 10cm high and 8cm diameter (roughly).

Thank you ☺️☺️☺️

I bought this mug for my sister a few years ago and really wished I'd got one for myself too! The shop I bought it from said that it was limited edition and they weren't getting any more but I still look everywhere I go in hope of finding one. When I saw your post, I was so excited 😅and may get the one from Tea&More instead.

JawsCushion · 26/11/2024 17:33

I was asking as if the minimum was 1000 as we all liked it we could all buy one!

Lallydallydune · 26/11/2024 14:54

I can't say that I understand it tbh.

Ive never insisted on someone getting me the exact same mug that I've had before.

It seems a bit odd.

Especially as cup designs come and go, and it would be hard to get a cup exactly the same, as the one that you had.

Any similiar mug would do

Ah, you've never had the love of the perfect mug clearly. Genuinely one of the best presents I've ever been given was a replacement for a favourite mug which had broken. It was exactly the right thickness, weight and size and looked lovely. It made my coffee taste nicer, and it made me happy every time I used it. I was so happy when I was given a replacement and so touched by the effort the buyer had put in. I cherish it even more now.

I don't expect everyone to get it, but there are far worse things to be into.

If you look at the third image of this item, which is of a similar style, there's a tag that looks like it says SIL ceramic or something (struggling to read it) but a quick Google suggests there is an Italian company called SIL ceramiche which looks more like tiles etc but may lead you further after a more in depth search?

Thighdentitycrisis · 26/11/2024 20:09

I looked up SIL ceramiche and they sell floor and wall tiles. Maybe the mugs were Ltd edition give away items ?

Greenfinch7 · 26/11/2024 22:20

I did order the bigger mug for the OP- wrong shape but right size... hope it works out!

SeaToSki · 26/11/2024 22:32

If you buy the World Market one and ship it to me in the US to arrive on Friday..express shipping will get it there in time (but you would have to do it now and its $$) then I am flying to the UK on Monday and can bring it with me.

PM me if that would work, and I will give you my address and we can work out how to get it to you once I am in England

SeaToSki · 26/11/2024 22:34

@Greenfinch7 might you be any where near the Seacoast…if you are and can drop the mug you bought at my house ..I am flying to the UK and can take it with me
PM me if you think it might work

hilariousnamehere · 26/11/2024 22:53

Found this one @Ohyeahwaitaminute - not quite the same but will keep looking!

That listing says the brand is TeaLogic and these guys stock that brand so maybe worth a call?
https://www.cupoftea.co.uk/tea-logic-/b20

And the SIL tag someone mentioned up thread is almost certainly this company: https://www.silplc.com/EN they are trade only but usually at some of the trade shows I've been to in the past and they might be able to give you an idea of stockists if you ring or email them?

Way too invested in this and I really hope you find one for your Mum x

I agree. Surely by the time you're in your 80s you've come to terms with the fact that shit happens. Just get a different lovely mug.

Yeah, because god forbid that someone wants to go the extra mile to do something nice for a loved one. 🙄

What is wrong with some people?!

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 26/11/2024 23:11

@SeaToSki - Thank you, but I’m hoping that @Greenfinch7 has it under control.

If I can’t pull this off for Christmas, then her birthday is the end of January.

Meanwhile, I’ll give the other links a peruse… send a few emails.

Im presently stuck in Shropshire in a hotel where the WiFi has gone down, so limping along with dodgy 4G. Apols if my replies are sporadic!

But I thought you wanted an exact replica OP.

The one greenfinch found is completely different.

I’m thinking that the OP has the best idea of what her mum might like 😊

I’m thinking that the OP has the best idea of what her mum might like 😊

That wasn't the point of what I wrote though.

I pointed out that the OP said in her first post that she wanted an exact replica, with the same glazed stars.

And several posters said why does it have to be exactly the same. That's unrealistic.

Now OP says she wants one with a different design to the original.

Mykittensmittens · 27/11/2024 21:38

The technical term for this ware with glazed holes
or perforations is ‘rice wear’ or ‘rice porcelain’.

If you adjust the search to include this you may find more. I live in the potteries (Staffordshire) and if you find a maker or stocker here I am happy to fetch and post or go to a seconds shop?

PullTheBricksDown · 27/11/2024 21:53

Now totally invested in the potential replacement mug and its journey with various helpers. It's like the Starlight Barking in 101 Dalmatians but with tableware 😄

LegoTherapy · 27/11/2024 22:16

What a lovely thread. It's a wonderful thing when mumsnet comes together to help someone out like this. Christmas spirit.

I love this type of mug now I've been introduced to it. Beautiful.

Fear of holes is trypophobia, for you lot who feel peculiar looking at them!

I knew there was a name for this. I absolutely hate them-no idea why! Good luck on your hunt OP-sorry I can't offer an answer but I agree with your poster who said she'd be very disappointed not to get the exact same mug. My mugs are very important to me like that too; if my drink is in the wrong mug (ie too heavy or too thin at the top), it ruins it for me 😁

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 27/11/2024 22:53

This was NOT supposed to turn into a bun fight! (That’s the phrase DM would use…) This is the Christmas Conversation Corner… not AIBU

Despite my searches over the months, contacting wholesalers in China who still manufacture said exact mug, but who’ll only send me 1,000 of them, through trawling through numerous websites using image search… it was in desperation that I turned to MN.

I agree… the one that has been found isn’t an exact replica, so I’m taking a punt on the most similar version that appears to be available. It’s the best I can do.

DM will be bowled over when I tell her that it’s been through the kindness of complete strangers that I’ve (hopefully) come up with the closest thing.

The other option was to completely give up!

Yes, she’s a fussy mare when it comes to drinking tea, but I reckon she won’t be around to drink as much tea in her lifetime that most of us will do on this thread.

She’s also very dear to me and I feel that finding a replacement would mean a lot.

Thank you all again for your time and energy in trying to locate it. 🤗

Ok…. So she changed her mind and hopefully has found a nice alternative option with help from around the world. That’s lovely, isn’t it? 🥰

This is so lovely! Just ignore the negative Nellies! You have done such a beautiful thing for your mum.

I saw the World Market one today, it’s pretty.
