Treat bits - when do you put yours ‘out’?

My late teen kids joke that the Christmas stash (as they refer to it) is out of bounds til a certain date (usually 23rd ish Dec). I’m just curious as to when you have your treaty bits out for general consumption?

@Soupwithstring We don't put anything out as we have labradors

Part of that club too!!!

OffMyDahlias · 24/11/2024 19:30

Probably the 20th once everyone is finished for the holiday. There will be no shrine to gluttony (as much as I’d love one) as my DS would take it as a challenge.

We have two pre teen DC who would demolish most things in seconds so things don't get put "out" at all.
We would usually get a box of Clementines a few days before Christmas and leave that out.
Crisps if we got them, would get out a sharing packet if we're watching a film with the DCs.
Their selection boxes they can have as pudding.
Fancy chocs not till they have gone to bed!
Some things are DC proof but stay in fridge or cupboard - blue cheese, dates, twiglets.

Surely fruit like clementines are a fairly regular part of the weekly shop, not a 'Christmas treat'?!

Some people on this thread must be so miserable in december, heaven forbid anyone eat a quality st before dec 24th 🙄🙄

I’ve spent today clearing out my desk ( which is in the sitting room) ready to turn it into a shrine to gluttony. What a fantastic idea! In recognition I put a fererro rocher into each lunchbox this evening.

AspirationalTallskinnylatte · 24/11/2024 20:36

About 3 hours before I want them to run out.

soupfiend · 24/11/2024 18:31

Whats a curd cupboard?

I want one anyway. Is it like a cheese board?

On that note, let's all take a moment to celebrate the demise of 2022's horrendous craze: the "butter board".

@EyUpMiDuck - Yes, I am a healthy weight: 5 ft 6.5 in, weight usually around 9st 11lb, BMI 22ish, age 49. That said, I've lost 2 stone since April - I go to 6-9 exercise classes each week depending on work, but it probably is 80% diet.

I love food and don't feel deprived as I make sure I eat stuff I really enjoy, and I have stopped consoling myself with food in moments of boredom or frustration - these are key things for me.

I will definitely be more restrained this Christmas - way fewer mince pies, no crisps, no cheese, more fancy nuts and olives and chocolate in smaller portions, do some kind of workout daily. I'm looking forward to it all!

LilacLilyBird · 24/11/2024 22:12

DS is at uni so nothing gets demolished anymore

We can get by on one Lindt a day this early on and a pack of caramelised almonds has lasted a few days since I bought them a couple of days ago

And mince pies get eaten very slowly so a pack lasts ages. By me mainly so one every 3 days or so

After the King's Speech I lovingly present each family member with a single Quality St. We try to make it last until Boxing Day, then it's back to big salads.

How feckless!

It is all put out on Christmas Eve - if it goes out before we'd have none left at all as DH wouldn't be able to leave it alone. I've been buying bits and we've been eating Mince Pies and DH has already dropped hints about what is there to munch on that is different. He knows it's there and can't wait! 😆

Slightly odd controlling dynamic.

Dropping hints !? He's an adult in his own house. Why not have a straight conversation about it.

Sounds like you mother him a bit !

Oh lord, I hope this is tongue in cheek!

Otherwise it's so bizarre & weirdly controlling.

Oh dear. What do you think when you read something like that?

That you 'hope' its tongue in cheek

Many a good joke absolutely ruined on this forum because things need to be spelled out to people. Dry as a bone.

This place used to be bloody hilarious. Now you get ridiculous queries like that when humour is used!

ChristmasCheesecake · 25/11/2024 11:39

We start on the goodies on Dec 1st as we have so much stuff so will bring out a box of chocs or crisps every other day roughly. I do like the idea of displaying it as it’s just shoved in the kitchen cupboard at the moment. I definitely need a lit up shrine to gluttony but I don’t have any spare surfaces. Would it be too frivolous to buy a sideboard for the job? 🤔

A massive box of Clementines, often only available around Christmas, is a special thing. Why can't fruit be associated with Christmas?

The smell of satsumas takes me right back to my childhood Christmases - love it.

Oh Yes! Has to be satsumas - anything else is bland and tasteless even though it might smell lovely.

Same! If I put out a bowl of nuts or crisps it would end up either empty or seasoned with a fine coat of black fur! He’s too polite to counter surf but would sit politely in front of the table grumbling and stamping his paws just to remind us he was there for the whole month 🙈. Luckily, he’s offended by even the smell of chocolate.

We wouldn’t have anywhere to put a shrine of gluttony anyway as a major design flaw of our house is that it has a massive kitchen with barely any counter space 😡 and we don’t have any side boards or anything.

DH and DS don’t like much in the way of chocolate so if we buy it, it ends up falling to me to eat it and I don’t want to. They’re a cheap date and their idea of a nice treat when watching a movie is to share a big box of Malteasers.

We’ll go shopping on 23rd December ish and all pick what we want but it’ll live in the cupboards or fridge (and DH is a weirdo who believes all chocolate belongs in the fridge).

Our main Christmas treat is Costco mince pies as they’re my and DH’s favourite food ever. We buy a couple of trays and freeze them as they’re huge and Costco is far away. We’ve already been eating them at the weekends for about a month 😂. If we left them out the lab would definitely snaffle the lot despite them having raisins in.

ToffeeSquirrels · 25/11/2024 12:56

Please tell me you're joking @MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel 🙄

I believe it's a reference to Gavin & Stacey's Nessa handing out single Celebrations as Xmas gifts...
😉

NoWordForFluffy · 25/11/2024 13:54

We have a broken Labrador, who's not interested unless it's meat or cheese. Meaning most Christmas snack food is safe!

I've never known any other lab be so fussy! Xmas Grin

RosesAndHellebores · 25/11/2024 14:54

It is. We always have a heaving bowl of Satsumas. And grapes.

Shrine to gluttony sounds absolutely wonderful!!!!

I am also considering setting up a shrine to gluttony now

mitogoshigg · 25/11/2024 15:01

As it's just us we buy and eat when we fancy them, already had stollen. My mum puts out chocolates etc for Christmas even onwards for when we go to stay

cigarettesNalcohol · 25/11/2024 15:02

We start eating Xmas 'treat bits' about 14 to 10 days before Xmas day.
