Jelly cats... have I missed the memo?!

I bought these for my kids as babies. Yet so many threads on here are about jellycats for teens. What's the hype?! I've clearly missed something!! My girls are 10 and 14.

Now you get them in odd forms, coffee take away cup, avocado, popcorn and they seem more expensive. All hype around a brand.

DrunkTinkerbell40s · 24/11/2024 06:42

It's just one of those things people collect now. When I was younger it was the me to you bears. These are just significantly more expensive!

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 24/11/2024 06:49

My girls (and me tbf) love the amusables ones - we have gathered a few over last 3 or so years but for some reason they seem to have suddenly really taken off.

TorroFerney · 24/11/2024 06:56

You can in theory buy or get one at any age, either sex - don;t like teddy bears but you eat eggs, get a little egg, new baby get a teddy/dog. have a handbag get a little keyring. We were in Selfridges in Manchester just as the new uni term started, the concession was heaving, mainly Chinese students and they were all (unlike me who just has a look) buying loads of them.

littlebirdieblu · 24/11/2024 06:58

It seems to be a huge trend in my daughters friendship groups at the moment. Twins age 11. They both have them in their Christmas list, but they are so expensive, and the ones they want are out of stock at the moment Confused

TheWayTheLightFalls · 24/11/2024 07:03

As above. In general the “kidult” market for toys and collectibles is huge. Ask me how I know 😁

makemineadecaf · 24/11/2024 07:07

£40 for a cuddly toy? They seem tiny!

Doesn't seem that different to the bedroom full of beany babies I had as a 90's tween. I guess the appeal is that is it is an acceptablely 'cool' way to still hang on a slice of childhood, for a group who are subconsciously terrified of how their entireworld is changing, but also feel societal pressure to want to grow up.

Thanks to a recent thread, I have the snow dragon. I am 56 and care not.

It is fabulous!

Fluufer · 24/11/2024 07:23

I bought the croissant for my grown up sister yesterday. I think they're adorable. It's nice that teens are still into toys in some form or other!

Itsgottobeme · 24/11/2024 07:28

Another one here for finding them adorable. I don't know why. It's not like me. But they've got me good. I cannot however afford any, and only have any because I've been gifted them.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 24/11/2024 07:32

I love them, and so does my typing adult daughter. And most of her friends!

Birdscratch · 24/11/2024 07:32

They’re very cute and some of them are around £25, which is more reasonable (I know, it’s still a lot for what they are!) The clementine is adorable.

queenofarles · 24/11/2024 07:34

Didn’t you see their pop ups on SM OP?
they were brilliant! And packed full with all age groups.

Paris was patisserie themed , staff pack your pastry of choice in paper and boxes , ask if you want extra cream 😂,
London was fish , chips peas , wrapped in newspaper served out of truck in selfridges.

DDs are crazy about them and collect the hard to find ones.

Onlymurders · 24/11/2024 07:54

They're very popular in older teens/young adults at uni at the moment too. Pinterest boards of uni rooms are full of them.

They're fun, what's not to like?! Older kids/adults appreciate them more than babies.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 24/11/2024 07:54

I really want the seafood ones. Have bought both my teens amuseables for Christmas.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 24/11/2024 07:55

I've bought DS the toilet roll one. It's been out of stock for months.

Onlymurders · 24/11/2024 07:56

@GargoylesofBeelzebub me too!

Gorgonemilezola · 24/11/2024 07:58

Their marketing strategy, whatever it is, is genius. They are ridiculously overpriced and overhyped. But if people like them, 🤷

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 24/11/2024 08:01

I went in Fenwicks last weekend, every single one even the £12 ones were security tagged. Lady on checkout said people are always trying to steal them every day.

makemineadecaf · 24/11/2024 08:02

So what is the typical size people are buying? Small? Medium?

You can get a grey felt seafood pan - I bought that for my daughter a couple of Xmas ago when I got her two of the jellycat seafoods.

Iheartmysmart · 24/11/2024 08:05

I’ve got a few and I’m 57. Have also bought DS and his girlfriend one each for Christmas and they’re both in their twenties.

The food ones are generally just one size per type. Some of the fruits come in a bit bigger range.

I have a range of the small fruits in a basket in the kitchen. I also bought myself the large octopus which sits on my bed. It's very soft and I love the textured tentacles!

I think if you feel you may get into collecting small are probably better as otherwise it's gets pricey.

My youngest has the fuddlewuddle dragon in her Xmas list in medium.
