The John Lewis Christmas advert

What does everyone think of this year's Christmas advert? I used to love the JL adverts but they're just bizarre and obtuse now. Is it just me or is it a touch 'wtaf is going on there then?' 😂🎄

I thought it was fairly obvious what was going on. But I didn't think it was anything particularly special. Definitely not one of their best.

Not very impressed.....it was too "busy" and doesn't feel festive to me at all 🤔

My thoughts exactly! I was left spectacularly under whelmed, which I'm guessing isn't the intention.
Their best one (don't even think it was a Christmas one tbh) was when we followed a little girl though all stages of her life (thinking about it, it could have been the other way round ... an older lady reliving her life..?) . The music was 'always a woman to me'.

No matter how many times I saw it, it made me cry!

I thought it was messy, banal and not very festive.

I like it, at least it's honest, it's about shopping at JL! It helps that I love that song.

Not as good as Monty. I doubt one will ever be as good as Monty and they will always be found lacking in comparison.

I showed ds the Monty advert yesterday (he was 1 when it originally came out so didn’t remember it) and he laughed the whole way through.

I agree with the song choice being good but beyond that it is really a boring ad.

@Smileybutwily my favourite was the one with the monster under the bed.....the song by elbow is absolutely brilliant!!! Its called golden slumber

I really liked the snowman and woman trying to get to each other ⛄ have t seen this years, will google now.

I love that Elbow cover. For me it actually tops the Beatles’ original. Wonderful. The monster makes me cry 😭

The penguin one is the best though.

The new ad is the worst one yet! No magic whatsoever. Best ones the penguins and the snowmen but I also liked the recent one with the dad learning to skateboard.

She's reminiscing about her sister at various points in her life to try and figure out the perfect present for her.

I liked the guardian's review of it, which included this paragraph:
But most importantly – most importantly of all – it must not be about John Lewis. The whole point of a John Lewis Christmas advert is that, if people watch it out of context and are subsequently asked what it is advertising, they should ideally reply ‘palliative care’ or ‘some sort of childhood trauma charity’. The point of a John Lewis Christmas advert is that a foreigner should be able to watch it all the way through and still have no idea what John Lewis is or why his kink is making people from Surrey cry.

Awful! And I'm confused about the trailer one with the pink jumper with the blob of jam on it...what was that all about? I used to love the JL Christmas adverts but this year it's rubbish!

I didn't understand the bit that made her sad about seeing one of them pregnant?

The timeline of the flashbacks didn't seem sequential.

It was so fast and incoherent.

The concept was fine but could have been done much better. And I honestly don't see why it makes people emotional (and I say this as someone who gets on v well with my sister and often cries when watching films!)

Watching it makes me feel stressed.

I don't think it was the pregnancy, I think it was seeing into the kitchen from the doorway. I'm assuming the lady dancing with the rubber gloves on was her Mum, who in the present day is dead (recent loss maybe?)

I quite liked it but not a patch on the golden years of JL adverts - power of love snowmen, the hibernating bear, the penguin etc.

It's a bit stupid! Didn't really understand it!
