Do you put it on the inside or outside?

Am considering buying 2 to double up because I can't decide?!

I think outside because tou can see it more in the hall but we always take photos on the kids sat on the stairs Christmas morning so that calls for inside!

I don't have a bannister in my current house but, when I did, I wound the garland around going between the posts.

BashfulClam · 17/11/2024 12:13

The bannister is for safety so ensure it can be used when decorating it. I fell down my stairs grabbing the bannister broke my fall slightly ( I didn’t manage to fully grab it but it slowed the momentum).

Well it goes under the part you rest your hand on so what difference would it make?

Outside as looks better and won't get in the way going up and down the stairs.

I’m just advising you make sure it’s usable. If I hadn’t managed to slow my fall I would have been badly injured.

SoupDragon · 17/11/2024 15:16

I weave mine in and out of the spindles.

user9086572 · 17/11/2024 15:21

Weave in and out and it sits on the stair it doesn’t go on top of the bannister.

DramaAlpaca · 17/11/2024 15:23

Outside because it looks better with the way our stairs go. I fix it with cable ties.

Isthisjustnormal · 17/11/2024 15:38

In and out of the spindles like others: but if I had to choose definitely outside - mine would be trashed if in the inside!

MrsForgetalot · 17/11/2024 15:50

Outside to avoid rubbing damage. Maybe you could attach it with ribbons or cover the cable ties with ribbons so that it looks pretty on the inside too

PurebredRacingUnicorn · 17/11/2024 15:57

Outside. Nobody is likely to be looking at the decorations while going upstairs.

Lavenderandbrown · 17/11/2024 16:30

Outside Place some presents on the steps for your annual photo. As a rule i like to decorate where i can see it going about my day. I use green pipe cleaners Craft area or childrens craft area have them They are easy to work with and gentle on hands and furniture. I do think two garlands would achieve your picture goals if you dont mind the expense and effort

Daffyyellow · 17/11/2024 16:53

Bunting rather than a garland, but always on the outside - so it’s seen from the room, other decs are viewed as the landing and stairs are used.

ABirdsEyeView · 18/11/2024 18:22

How do people attach garlands if they don't have spindles?

I use these. We have glass bannisters at the bottom and these fit between the glass and the handrail

Thank you @HermoinePotter

Does anyone have any recommendations for nice bannister garlands as ours have seen better days?

titchy · 18/11/2024 18:59

Oh and we also weave between the spindles!

Sia8899 · 18/11/2024 19:02

I don't have spindles but I drape it one way then the other across the handrail so it gives the effect of going in and out of spindles. Then secure with Frog tape

I've just ordered these as they actually look weighty

I'll let you know tomorrow if they're any good

@Kitchenwoe did the garlands arrive? How do they look?

Not that impressed. It's not as bushy as I expected. I might use it for my porch or I might return it, undecided.

I actually found dark green bushy tinsel at Lidl and have wrapped that round the bottom of the bannister and once I decorate it I'll post a photo.

I usually put mine along the hand rail, but this year I'll probably add some at the bottom of the spindles as I'm swapping my garlands around, due to accidentally buying some faux cedar ones 😺

In our first house, I wound in and out of the bannisters, at the bottom.

In our second house, we had boards running up the slope, 70s style, rather than spindles, so I hung it in swags from red velvet ribbons.

The third house was a bungalow so the garland had a few years off, living in a box in the attic.

Hopefully we'll be in the final house by Christmas and it'll be back to winding through bannisters, but I'll work the velvet ribbon in somehow as well because it was pretty.
