Vintage decorations and fairy lights with potentially dodgy electrics

How do I get rid of these, in particular the fairy lights which are from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, and miraculously still work. Also Polish and German Christmas tree balls from the 70s and 80s. Our local charity shop won’t take any electrics and didn’t want the tree decs if they were glass, which they are.

There are a lot. Particularly the lights.

Honestly, I would bin them unfortunately, because of safety reasons .

happytobee · 11/11/2024 15:25

List the tree decs on facebook marketplace or give them away for free on your local ‘XXX is kind’ or equivalent? The lights maybe take to the tip

AutumnLeaves24 · 11/11/2024 15:26

If you're going to bin them <sobs. They are THE best>. Make sure you cut the wiring into short lengths.

nut hopefully you'll find a better option.

would they be ok to go in the small electrical items bins??

our local recycling plant would be happy to advise for our area. Would yours??

personally I'd keep them & enjoy them, but only have them on when I was in the room.

Oh gosh , I would take the vintage tree decorations off your hands if you were local , I’m sure if you popped them on Facebook they would go straightaway .

Do you have a men’s shed locally , they might be interested in getting the lights up and running safely , if not I think I’d recycle them in our small electrical recycling box , just so no one decided to take a chance and use them if they aren’t safe .

AmberCrow · 11/11/2024 17:45

You could probably get the lights tested - my DH has a PAT machine and does ours every year, you might know someone who can do it if you ask around. The charity shop would probably take them if they pass and if they don’t then they will need to be binned.
The decorations I’m sure someone would want if you put them on freecycle or something.

AppleandSpice · 11/11/2024 19:04

I’m another that would take these off your hands if I was local.

Vintage Christmas lights and decorations are highly collectable. They fetch a fair price on eBay.

It would be a shame to throw them, like others have said stick them on Facebook either for sale or free. Someone will take them off your hands.

yogasam · 11/11/2024 19:14

As pp has said vintage Christmas lights and decorations are highly collectable. You'd be mad to chuck them - at least put them on Facebook or eBay.
I put two strings of lights on my tree, new LED ones and lovely soft old coloured lights, but I only turn the old ones on when I'm in the room or nearby.
Putting ancient glass decs on the tree doesn't faze me one bit - most of my baubles are much treasured hand me downs from parents or grandparents.

MrsApplepants · 11/11/2024 19:25

I will take the whole lot off your hands OP, if you are anywhere near south wales?

Allnewtometoo · 11/11/2024 19:27

Give them to meeeee!

Mipil · 11/11/2024 20:04

Another joining to say I’ll happily take them off your hands! 😂 Hell, I’d even pay postage…

Seriously, you will easily sell them on eBay, vinted or Facebook. There are Etsy sellers that specialise in selling them. You would be surprised how much a single bauble goes for.

WesolychSwiat · 11/11/2024 20:43

I’m not sure they’d survive the post! I’m near Reading if anyone wants to take them off my hands.

It’s not that I don’t want to keep them but I’ve enough to open a shop already.

I’ve messaged you 😊

Greenfinch7 · 11/11/2024 23:09

I would absolutely love them and live near Reading! I am away at the moment, for a few weeks, but if you haven't found a home for them, I would be so grateful... not sure when I could come get them though- it might be quite close to Christmas.

Theraffarian · 12/11/2024 15:09

Regrettably I am nowhere near reading , I’m envious of their new owner though !

Mipil · 12/11/2024 17:11

I would love them too! Reading is not too far for me. I’ll PM you in case they still need a home.
