Best dessert for Christmas

I'm hosting Christmas this year and have to get a non traditional pudding for after dinner.
I'm planning on getting vinenetta for fun but what exciting pudding is the best. No allergies and a tenner or under.
Thanks

Following on from previous suggestions, i have made a tiramisu yule log before. You should be able to find a recipe online.

MrsNotquiteAverage · 11/11/2024 11:45

How about a trifle?
We have been talking about food we had a kids, my Aunty used to make a 'traditional' trifle with those special sponge cakes and an orange jelly. I am seriously considering it for this year.

InnerPlop · 11/11/2024 11:45

My personal faves for puddings are:
Treacle Tart
Sticky toffee pudding
Bread and butter pudding

DH would always go for a lemon cheesecake or key lime pie.

Love the Vienetta idea though OP!

Newname101 · 11/11/2024 11:49

Thanks for the ideas, do people like trifle and tirammso and best place to buy. Soggy sponge is not a texture i like so I had forgotten about them.
I was thinking special supermarket puds for some wow factor. People at dinner will be parents in law, me and dh and 2 teens. DH hates pudding so I'm getting him the vinentta as a surprise. Teens will want something with chocolate.

We love pavlova.
I know it's traditionally a summer dessert but it's nice and light after a big dinner.
And if you put enough fruit in there it's almost healthy! 😜

KnickerlessParsons · 11/11/2024 11:54

You want something light really - like a light cheesecake or a fruit salad. What about a "charlotte aux fraises" - I don't know what that is in English - strawberry something - you could use any fruit.

Tarte tatin is also nice - easy, and not stodgy

(I'm not French btw!)

I remember reading somewhere that Panettone is becoming increasingly popular as a substitute for Xmas pudding. And it comes in many sizes and prices.

Waitrose also have this cinnamon-y version which sounds delicious.

I'm.neither a tiramisu or a trifle fan. So woild be very disappointed if that was the offerings.
If you want chocolate how about chocolate brownie brownie pudding

SatansBobbleheadedDashboardOrnament · 11/11/2024 11:57

A chocolate orange cheesecake (using good old Terry's choc is perfect) for those fancying something a bit more indulgent. A posh fruit salad (the classic fruits plus some posh stuff - pomegranate pearls and lychee are tasty and good festive colours).

mitogoshigg · 11/11/2024 12:00

What's wrong with Christmas pudding? Though i would avoid vienetta instead get a roulade from Lidl, they are yummy

Newname101 · 11/11/2024 12:03

I'm the only one who likes Christmas pudding so I'll be having that on my own. My husband only likes vinenetta so that's for him. Roulade is soggy sponge :-)

M and s and Waitrose both sell lovely lemon tarts if you want something pre made.

Ophy83 · 11/11/2024 14:02

M&S profiterole stack. Put it on a pretty plate with some berries around it to look extra festive!

skippy67 · 11/11/2024 14:06

We have pavlova, and apple crumble cake.

CoastalCalm · 11/11/2024 14:08

Deffo pavlova for me , lots of nice tropical fruit

Ohyoudodoyou · 11/11/2024 14:08

Curly wurly, spangles, finger of fudge then some of mum's after eights.
I always skipped pudding as a kid 😀
(Something light like the very nice chestnuts and chic homemade nigella roulade, or black forestry something)

Can't find Nigella's but this will be nice.

TomatoSandwiches · 11/11/2024 14:11

Mini pavlova in the shape of Christmas trees, whipped cream, whatever space you like and plenty of mixed fruits of choice, toasted nuts, there is a recipe for a large one on Recipe Tin Eats for inspiration.

madmumofteens · 11/11/2024 14:18

I make a key lime pie then a pavlova with the egg whites 😘

TomatoSandwiches · 11/11/2024 14:21

@madmumofteens that sounds right up my street 😋

Mindymomo · 11/11/2024 14:24

Another vote for M&S profiterole stack.

ElizabethVonArnim · 11/11/2024 14:30

I yearn for a proper 1980s Black Forest gateau. One from the freezer section, with bright red glaze cherries and chocolate vermicelli around the outside. None of your posh stuff with natural colouring. If the cream isn't stiff-piped, it isn't proper. Should taste distinctly of penicillin.

katscamel · 11/11/2024 14:34

Sainsburys did a great profiterole dish last year so am hoping the same this year as I've got one on order.
I've just seen a recipe for a gingerbread and orange trifle which I might look at properly and try.
Pavlova is always good and nice and light after a typical Xmas dinner or a good ice cream or Vienetta as you've said.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 11/11/2024 14:34

I have a very good recipe for a never fail chocolate cake that uses vegetable oil instead of butter or margerine. I have converted it into a black forest cake using canned cherry pie filling, kirsch, and whipped cream.

When we opened the fridge the cream had squished out between the layers and the whole thing looked alarming, like it was out to get us. It tasted great though.
