I'm hosting Christmas this year and have to get a non traditional pudding for after dinner.
I'm planning on getting vinenetta for fun but what exciting pudding is the best. No allergies and a tenner or under.
Thanks

My mum insists on making trifle, no one eats it apart from her. MIL insists on christmas pudding, no one eats it apart from her. We have pavlolva or lemon tart but mostly cheese.

Jukeboxjive · 11/11/2024 15:09

@ElizabethVonArnim minus penicillin me also.

Op I think a pavlova or proper homemade trifle is hard to beat..

I've never made a trifle and I'm not a good cook but I'm going to try one this year.
Any recipes recommend

I like M&S chocolate fresh cream Swiss roll. Melt and pour milk chocolate. Serve with extra thick cream.

Tattletail · 11/11/2024 15:28

A winter fruit crumble.

Genius. It is £4! and comes in a convenient box to store in the fridge! and we can add raspberries. Sorted. Thanks!

What with this and the OPs husband eating a whole Vienetta, I'm thinking of starting a new tradition: a different pudding for each person, all to oneself.

Mine would be a very large tiramisu.

SeatonCarew · 11/11/2024 16:04

Crepes Suzettes for a touch of retro 70s. Flambe at the table for an exciting touch of seasonal peril.

Cross posted with you on 'a pudding of one's own'.

Mine is the Morrisons panna cotta star. DP has something disgustingly chocolatey.

Pannacota

I always bake this at Christmas just like my mom used to. Gerbeaud is a walnut, apricot jam bake with a chocolate ganache on top from a levened dought. That is our favourite. Dunno just someth different.

If you’re anywhere in the north Booths supermarket sell a really nice range of frozen desserts from a company called ‘Cook’. There is a large shop in Harrogate too. We’ve had some lovely roulades (meringue) and gateaus. They are the nearest thing to a well made home dessert. I often cut the roulade in half and just take half out the freezer.

Another vote for pavlova - instead of traditional summer fruit topping, poach pears in mulled wine.

Or - gingerbread house kit and force the teens to make it. A showstopper for sure!

I remember reading somewhere that Panettone is becoming increasingly popular as a substitute for Xmas pudding. And it comes in many sizes and prices.

Waitrose also have this cinnamon-y version which sounds delicious.

Panettone is disappointing as a pudding substitute! I'd use it in place of a teacake or brioche.

@Pistachiochiochio panettone does make great bread and butter pudding though! Throw some minncemeat into it and boom!

Exactly- great ingredients for pudding. Not pudding itself!

Definitely not! I do not want a slice of pannetone for pudding. It would be like having toast 😂

NoWordForFluffy · 11/11/2024 18:26

I make a steamed chocolate and cherry pudding which is lovely! I've also done a chocolate orange cheesecake before as well, though I'm doing a lemon one this year thanks to the poncetastic thread!

Cerialkiller · 11/11/2024 18:34

I'm making caramel baked cheesecake and a tart au Citroen.

Previous years

Lime curd and raspberry pavlova

Chocolate caprese cake

Chocolate rulard

Lemon posset (very easy and delicious)

TransvestitesOnParade · 11/11/2024 18:34

Aldi do a lovely pavlova stack dessert at Christmas, they have this one and a salted caramel and chocolate one I think this year. Il be getting one of these and will probably get to eat it all to myself. The others will have sticky toffee pudding and ice cream.

I make a different weird trifle every year. It'll make the MN trifle purists' toes curl, but it's fun, it always gets demolished and it's become a tradition.

Last year's was Black Forest - chocolate cake and brownie chunks, morello cherry jelly, chocolate custard, sour cherry compote, whipped cream, topped with cherries and dark chocolate curls.

This year I'm planning an orange and lemon "St Clements" concoction. Lemon curd Swiss roll , lemon jelly, orange jelly, orange and lemon filling (made the same way as key lime pie filling), bitter orange curd, whipped cream, topped with mini orange and lemon slice sweets.
