Best dessert for Christmas

I'm hosting Christmas this year and have to get a non traditional pudding for after dinner.
I'm planning on getting vinenetta for fun but what exciting pudding is the best. No allergies and a tenner or under.

Marks and Spencer used to make a delicious chocolate trifle.
I tend to make something refreshing.. key lime pie, lemon cheesecake etc but I would make something not buy it. Homemade desserts are always 100% better than shop ones.

I wouldn’t buy a ready made pudding. They’re so easy to make & taste much better. I’d go for a pavlova or a raspberry & white chocolate cheesecake.

If you’re anywhere in the north Booths supermarket sell a really nice range of frozen desserts from a company called ‘Cook’. There is a large shop in Harrogate too. We’ve had some lovely roulades (meringue) and gateaus. They are the nearest thing to a well made home dessert. I often cut the roulade in half and just take half out the freezer.

You don’t need to be near a Booths. There are lots of actual ‘Cook’ shops here & loads of other shops sell their meals (SE).

We love pavlova.
I know it's traditionally a summer dessert but it's nice and light after a big dinner.
And if you put enough fruit in there it's almost healthy! 😜

I make a Christmas pavlova by soaking mandarin segments in mulled wine syrup. Put them in your homemade meringue, with whipped cream. I melt dark chocolate with ginger (Green & Blacks) and drizzle it over the top too. It’s delicious!

We always make a variety of puddings, mostly chocolate fans in our house and we host for a large crowd on Christmas Day.
Normally make:
caramel filled chocolate lava bombs
profiteroles with a chocolate ganache and also some with the rest of the caramel from the lava cakes
Delias chocolate torte
Mince pies
Christmas pud (actually made by mil and dropped off! They don’t come for Christmas Day but she always sends us one anyway cos she’s lovely).
mostly all made in advance as much as possible, the lava bombs, profiteroles (unfilled and untopped) torte and mince pies etc all done before Christmas Day and then stuff is heated up and finished off while dinner is being cleared away.

Chocolate trifle! Slice up a chocolate Swiss roll, pour a tin of sliced peaches or cherries over it, make chocolate custard, pour over the cake and fruit, let it cool and set in the fridge then cover in whipped cream and decorate with flakes and edible Christmas decorations

I'm 100% not making it! 23rd is my birthday, 24th is really busy and Christmas day it's not going to happen. Thanks for all the ideas that are not trifle and that I can buy. I will ge looking into them :-)

I'm the only one who likes Christmas pudding so I'll be having that on my own. My husband only likes vinenetta so that's for him. Roulade is soggy sponge :-)

Roulade is simply the name for rolling and wrapping something. You can have meat roulades, pastry roulades…

A roulade does not have to contain any sponge. A lot are meringue based desserts.

How about a trifle?
We have been talking about food we had a kids, my Aunty used to make a 'traditional' trifle with those special sponge cakes and an orange jelly. I am seriously considering it for this year.

I did a cheat's platinum Jubilee trifle a couple of years back and it's been requested each year since. You can chop and change what you put in but it needs to be fruity and fresh

I also do a chocolate one using shop bought brownies broken up at the bottom, raspberry puree and fresh raspberries, layer of whipped chocolate ganache and then home-made custard, whipped cream, buttons.

I yearn for a proper 1980s Black Forest gateau. One from the freezer section, with bright red glaze cherries and chocolate vermicelli around the outside. None of your posh stuff with natural colouring. If the cream isn't stiff-piped, it isn't proper. Should taste distinctly of penicillin.

My DH loves black forest, I put my own version together with chocolate sponge, cherries in kirsch and whipped cream. Just in little glasses with a good sprinkle of grated chocolate. 😋

I make pumpkin pie and my children love it. Will also do an apple crumble.

My mum makes the most beautiful croissant pudding and she’ll also bring a trifle as she likes it.
