Thread 9 - the one with a kink for L’Occitaine

Reastie · 04/11/2024 18:52

Thanks @Travelcrazy for the title. It really tickled me!

Greetings and welcome one and all to a friendly and joyful corner of mn - the Christmas bargain thread. Here, we share Christmas present purchases, ideas, links and discount codes, with the aim to spread the Christmas magic and joy and reduce the financial stress.

It's a very busy thread, so see the tips below for helping everything run smoothly and avoiding repetitions of Cookiegate etc al. It's a lovely, friendly bunch and I'm so grateful to each and every one of you for building such a warm, fuzzy and generous spot on mn. I know I've save so much over the years and am so grateful to all of you for sharing.

Pull up a sleigh and relax with a mulled wine and mince pie, for Christmas has nearly arrived!

@ me if you need anything or you want to let me know anything - the thread moves so fast I can't always keep up so this really helps

A few pointers to make everyone’s life easier and the thread be as useful as possible:

  • It’s handy to put in bold the bargains so they’re easy to spot
  • No affiliate links
  • No need to place mark or post messages of hello or thanks at the start of a new thread - use the ‘watch thread’ button
  • Be nice or leave

The current referral thread for sharing referral codes https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/4940918-4940918-bargain-referrals-thread-6 . Please use this rather than this page to share referral links to make the sharing fair.

To make clicks links, you set it up like this only without any spaces apart from between the website and the word(s) you’re writing: www.bargainsahoyeveryonecomehere.co.uk

Thanks @RainbowZebraWarrior for the instructions below.
To make something bold, put this star * either side of the word you want to bold (with no spaces in between)

So starhellostar would look like this.

hello

Obviously use the * not the word star

Some of the below is copied and pasted from previous years, so do @ me if the links don't work

I'm totally overinvested in Quality Street and I don't have a JL card or even a store within an hours drive 😂

Went RL shopping today, Harry Potter cluedo for £9 in home bargains

A cute amethyst bracelet for 99p

Also a set of Grinch PJs which weren't quite as much of a bargain but beautiful and soft

I have a referral code you can use. You get £25 and so do I. I signed up ages ago but haven't used it yet.

Ah thank you, it doesn't seem to work though. Could be me!

fishfingersandchipsagain · 07/11/2024 20:05

Re. Quality Street I can 100% confirm you have to pay for the chocolates. I did it last year.

Dolphintrainer · 07/11/2024 20:07

rhubarbhandsoap · 07/11/2024 19:11

If the reward turns out to be “we’ll let you choose one flavour and pay for a full tin of them” that’s an incredible level of retail gaslighting 😂

🤣🤣🤣🤣

NearlyChristma · 07/11/2024 20:00

@Thelifeofawife where can you get the individual sweets? I fondly remember happening across a box full of only green triangles one Christmas but that was Woolies.

I saw some in Iceland last week, I think they were the coffee ones.
A quick Google search came up with flavours ones at JL, Ocado, Iceland & Poundland (and eBay!)

RainbowZebraWarrior · 07/11/2024 20:12

The tin holds 1.2kg so if you were to buy the individual pouches, it would cost over £20 to fill the tin.

It is badly worded, but I don't think for a second that the chocolate is free. However, for anyone like me who's had a tin bought from them years ago, it is actually cheaper. (And more so if I decided to use my £5 voucher)

The reward is definitely just them trying to make us feel 'special' in order to be able to pick just one flavour.

It's also worth noting that at this time of year, they often run out of the popular ones. I've been doing this for 4 years now and have had to pay several visits last year and the year before as its become more popular and certain flavours havent been available when I've gone in.

N.B. Iceland, Sainsbury's and Ocado among others do various pouches of coffee creams, green Triangles and purple ones for about £4 for 252g

CapybaraParty · 07/11/2024 20:13

The Lakeland sale is fairly decent as it is but they also allow you to use the leaflet codes with the reduced price too. I used one to get further discount on an already discounted heated throw. Would anyone like the £10 off a £60 spend one? I'll PM

tealbead · 07/11/2024 20:14

LePetitMaman · 07/11/2024 18:48

I don't know if anyone has explained this yet, but the chocolates are free

If you bring your own tin, you can fill it up with one sole flavour, for free.

If you buy an empty tin at John Lewis, it costs £14 (I think PP said the empty tins cost that, seems steep for an empty tin?) and you get to fill it up with one sole flavour, free.

This isn’t right, see my screenshot earlier in the day. It says ‘when purchasing a tin of quality street’, not ‘when purchasing a quality street tin’.

MamaK19 · 07/11/2024 20:18

I’m sure a thread or two back there was someone searching for guinea pig things - I just came across this cute teddy on the card factory for only £4.99 which might be a good buy 💛🐹

NearlyChristma · 07/11/2024 20:20

Tesco has 300g pouches of quality street for £4 which will probably go on Clubcard deals at some point so JL is only useful if you want to pick your flavours.
Thanks for the suggestions of place to look for green triangles but none of them list this as an option.

fishfingersandchipsagain · 07/11/2024 20:23

I am having a reverse-bargain situation.

There have been a few Amazon bargains linked on here in the last few weeks where I wasn’t totally sure of them.

So I put them in my basket as “save for later”, thinking to myself “well, the price might go down a bit more”.

Well, the price on all of them just keeps going up, so some good bargains have been had by those who bought them!

Pollypoorly · 07/11/2024 20:25

Watching for fridges. Also need a gift for 13 year old girl around £25. Any ideas??!! Really stumped this year.
My biggest find this week is the 3 for £6 paperbacks at the works and some cute looking crochet kits at £3 there.

Re: the M&S Wellness Set, apologies if this has already been asked, but do they only offer the delivery option for this item? This is the first time I have tried ordering from M&S and not been able to collect the order in-store.

I think the person nailed it above who said expect prices to rise for the drop for Black Friday.

Does anyone know of a discount code for Gisela Graham website please?

Try HELLO10 for 10% off. Not sure if there’s a minimum spend though.

Hoping someone can come up with a genius idea for my mum for Christmas. Last year I got her the spicery book and spice set which went down incredibly well. I then got her the 3 month subscription for mothers day so need a new idea for this Christmas, hopefully something that wows the same level

I got my friend a Persian cookbook and spices from the region

SweetPeaPods · 07/11/2024 20:38

Any recommendations for a family gift please. SiL, BiL and nieces (16,15,14). Budget £100-£150.
I was thinking maybe an activity they could all do together as don't get as much family time as they would like.

mousegiggles1 · 07/11/2024 20:38

I know there has been mention of personalised necklaces before, but I'm after a double one. Can anyone help please?
It is from my DDs to me, but with my nickname so looks like:

Mama
Mouse

Hope that makes sense. Tatty devine do 1 but think I'd rather rose gold or silver. Thank you 😊

redjoker · 07/11/2024 20:40

Green and Blacks 400g on Amazon. If you apply the current £3.70 voucher, and happen to have a subscribe and save order to add it to (I always do in November) then it goes down to just over £7.

Same for me. Very frustrating!

imnottoofussed · 07/11/2024 14:51

@Scoleah one of the game settings prevents you having a winning streak. I think it's called turbo mode. With each question the timer gets shorter so you do eventually lose and play moves onto next person

That's great to know thank you! Will have to try it!
