Those accommodating vegetarian/vegan guests, do you cook two lots of roasties/gravy, or do you put up with the veggie versions for everyone? I don't think I could compromise on goose-fat roasties!

Everyone compliments me and DH on our crispy roast potatoes cooked in olive oil.

My sister makes the gravy but think it is Bisto. Me and DH don't eat gravy

I make a couple of the Delia parsnip roulades every year as for a few of the guests it's not Christmas without it. It has many steps but comes together impressively at the end. My sincere advice is do not attempt it on Christmas day. It's definitely a day before task as you need space and pans to make it.

Seconded. I make 4 and freeze 2. :)

I get lots of compliments on my roasties too. They’re done in sunflower oil (used to use olive oil but someone said t
you shouldn’t cook in it). Bistro gravy is really easy to do separately if everyone else is having real meat gravy.

Sunflower oil isn’t great for us. And olive oil loses its benefits when heated.

I use rosemary-infused cold-pressed rapeseed oil for mine.

Everyone has bisto gravy. No one is that fussed about gravy and, as I said, me and DH don't eat gravy as we both think it is revolting and makes your lovely food soggy

Asking all the people who say 'I just eat the veges' or 'mushroom tart and the veges' etc, do you not have any protein?

Not with the actual meal but I’ll have cheese and biscuits and nuts etc later on in the day anyway. I thought it would be weird, but found there are so many different veg and potatoes on our table that I have with gravy and it’s still lovely. I never found any of the replacements went well with all that imo.

The parsnip roulade is designed to go with it all.

Even with about 17 other veg dishes, I have to have it on the plate. :)

You seem to have misunderstood me. I'm not asking why you don't eat meat. I'm asking where the protein is in your diet. Gorillas eat high protein leaves and have a complex intestinal tract that creates a fermentation process that produces protein.

My question was where is the protein in your meal because I would feel hungry without protein. I haven't mentioned meat. You did that all by yourself.

downwindofyou · 04/11/2024 12:52

@susiedaisy1912
You are right. Health wise one meal is irrelevant. I'm taking about satisfaction wise. I always want some sort of protein in my main meal or I don't feel satisfied. A pie or tart or nut roast or some sort of tofu number.

Small meals aren't an issue but for a main meal and especially a celebration meal like Christmas, I'd feel short changed with just the roast veges

dreamcatchlavender · 04/11/2024 12:56

Nut roast, sausages, the supermarkets do really nice mushroom wellingtons too.

SallyWD · 04/11/2024 13:03

I can't stand Quorn but I make a delicious but roast. Really tasty. I couldn't only eat potatoes and vegetables. I need protein.

Haha! Nut roast.

Needmorelego · 04/11/2024 13:12

@downwindofyou the whole "where's your protein" thing - people are talking about Christmas dinner here which is just one meal of the day. I don't like traditional Christmas dinner (vegetarian or not) so I actually don't eat much of what's on offer.
But I LOVE our Christmas tea which is a lot of things like cheese, quiche, sausage rolls etc and will eat loads then.
So when I tuck myself into bed at the end of Christmas Day I've had plenty of my daily protein.

Wigtopia · 04/11/2024 13:15

Home made nutroast (amazing recipe from the Leon veggie cook book!) and a mushroom wellington along with spuds and veg and veggie gravy. We then take left overs to the big family boxing day buffet where everyone brings along their leftovers

To be fair, bistro gravy is vegetarian.

Yes I know it is. I use it for stews which is the only time we have gravy

The protein comes from things we eat, just like the gorillas.

Vegetables have protein in them too. The amount of protein per 100g there is 2.1g in mash, 1.7g in parsnips , 0.9g in carrots, 5g in peas, 2.8g in broccoli, 1.9g in cauliflower, 3.3g in sweetcorn, 7g in a serving of Yorkshire pudding, 9g in veg gravy, 5g in pasta etc...

Now if we reduced it from 100g each to the suggested serving sizes thats about 18-20g of protein. It's not like the food we eat are magically devoid of any protein. You are recommended to eat 15-30g of protein per meal so perfectly in recommended range. Veg is also less calories, provides more vitamins and fiber and is easier to eat much more of filling you up (and its cheaper on the pocket).

I have certainly never felt hungry afterwards.

I aim for 130g protein a day. (Weight lifter.)

Who puts sweetcorn or pasta on a Xmas dinner?! 🤮

The things you’ve listed are probably 80% carbohydrate. Great if you want a nap or to run a marathon mid afternoon.

Lots of people have pasta with Xmas dinner or even Sunday diner... its one of the most popular options at Toby Carvery (one of the biggest carvery chains in the country).

You are aware this whole thread is specifically ABOUT what we have instead of the 'traditional' meat right?

The 'ew, who would have that, thats not the standard or what I eat' show a complete lack of basic understanding of the thread.

Pretending to puke over our food is really fucking juvenile too.

Openmouthinsertfood · 04/11/2024 18:16

Thanks for that @HannahDefoesChristmasHamper I don't like stuffing so will doubly not eat a nut roast!

I posted the link somewhere on here.

It’s a Delia Smith recipe if you want to google.

Roryno · 04/11/2024 22:41

Thanks. I found it. But it doesn’t look like something I’d choose.

ItTook9Years · 04/11/2024 23:19

There is nothing more perfect than creamed parsnips.
