I usually have something like a microwave veggie lasagne (slightly posher version than usual supermarket one if I can).
I not only don't eat the meat but I really don't like roast potatoes, stuffing and the types of vegetables that traditionally come with a roast.
If I absolutely HAD to I could force some roasties and maybe carrots down me but it really wouldn't be an enjoyable meal for me.
Everyone else in the family likes the traditional meal so they have that. I have something that can be bunged in the microwave so not to create extra cooking for the chef (my husband).
Oh.....and no one cares or thinks I'm rude btw.
Oh I do eat sausages and bacon so I sometimes grab a few pigs in blankets (I'm not a complete veggie 🐷)

Edited

If you eat bacon and sausages... then you're not veggie!😅

I usually have nut roast but this year am going to make a spanakopita and have with all the veggies

susiedaisy1912 · 03/11/2024 18:41

I just have all the veg, stuffing etc and thick veggie gravy.

housethatbuiltme · 03/11/2024 18:41

Growing up I just ate all the veggie parts so basically the same as everyone else without turkey or pigs in blanket.

Now as an adult we do a cheesy veg pasta to go with everything.

I personally have never liked the fake joint meat substitute things. Its the kind of thing meat eater who host veggie guests for dinner always insist on buying so we can 'join' in but I would rather they just didn't bother and saved their money to be honest. I'll be fine with just the normal veg stuff.

Needmorelego · 03/11/2024 18:47

@HazeyjaneIII no I'm not a veggie. Never said I was 😂

I've been veggie for almost all my life and I've never tried a nut roast! Does it taste of nuts? Silly question I know. I used to have Linda McCartney's sausage rolls with my Christmas dinner but this year they seem to have changed and are no where near as nice as they once were. I'll have veg, roast potatoes, Yorkshires and onion gravy.

Same.

I think I tried one once 20 years ago (once again when a meat eater insisted on making one for me) and it was dry and awful like a mouth full of weird tasting sawdust. I remember it being hard to swallow.

Never felt the need to have another one.

If a meat eater really must insist on a 'meat substitute' because not making a main offends their hosting skills then personally for me some simple veggie sausages to go with the mash and veg would probably be the most like to get eaten option.

Parsnip and cheese roulade (too complicated)

It so isn’t. I’ve made 4 at a time every year for 25 years.

We don’t do Xmas in December but I always have one in the freezer to bring out in July. It’s absolute heaven.

Can we have your recipe please?

bifurCAT · 03/11/2024 18:55

Unfriend them

sprigatito · 03/11/2024 18:56

Those accommodating vegetarian/vegan guests, do you cook two lots of roasties/gravy, or do you put up with the veggie versions for everyone? I don't think I could compromise on goose-fat roasties!

Crikeyalmighty · 03/11/2024 19:05

My veggie guest likes vegetarian haggis with all the usual accompaniments - I actually tried some last year and liked it too .

No “putting up with” with my roasties. They can withstand a microwave 3 days later and still be crispy.

It’s Saint Delia’s.

Protein is sooooooo last century.

Rainbow321 · 03/11/2024 19:11

Today I've made ( and eaten ) a Spinach , Sweet Potato and chickpea curry with rice .
Yesterday was a veggie sausage toad in the hole with broccoli & onion gravy .

Roryno · 03/11/2024 19:16

Ive tried all sorts of things over the years, but never found anything particularly wonderful. I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m happier just having loads of veggies and roast potatoes with bistro gravy and not having a meat “replacement”.

LuluBlakey1 · 03/11/2024 19:36

Thank you very much. Too complicated for me unfortunately.

Ooh, thanks for the tip off, I think I'll give the nut roast a miss then!

downwindofyou · 03/11/2024 19:52

Asking all the people who say 'I just eat the veges' or 'mushroom tart and the veges' etc, do you not have any protein?

Noidea2024 · 03/11/2024 19:56

We Nut roast and Quorn roast, with Quorn sausages, veggie gravy and then all the normal trimmings.

Needmorelego · 03/11/2024 19:59

@downwindofyou this is just one meal that people are talking about - Christmas dinner.
If I just (reluctantly) ate some roasties and veg for my Christmas dinner I'm not going to wither up from hunger.
I'd get my daily protein from my breakfast and tea !

Same here. Mine are done in olive oil (not EV) and are done to a turn.

I'm not vegetarian but fifty percent of my household was when I was younger and my PIL and DHs aunt and uncle are, I really enjoy most vegetarian food, there are two exceptions nut roast and tofurkey oh I also forgot about tinned fish free tuna 🤢.

Mary Berry has a really nice veg and Roquefort filo parcel recipe that's always a crowd pleaser here. (I just use whatever veg is seasonal and adapt cooking times as needed, the original recipe is Mediterranean veg)

It's 1 meal... do you sit and eat meat and protein for every single thing you eat?

Been veggie for 35 years and had zero protein deficient issues in all that time.

Its interesting the majority of the biggest animals on earth are not meat eaters so don't worry about us wasting away lol. In fact Gorillas (and many other apes and monkeys for that matter) one of the closest relatives to humans thrive and are bigger and stronger than us without eating meat.

shockeditellyou · 03/11/2024 20:48

I have yet to meet a nut roast I like - they are mostly dense enough to have their own gravitational field, and claggy. I also can’t stand those meat substitutes, and cheese heavy stuff makes me heave - everyone suggests baked Camembert and blearugh.

On this year’s list is the Ottolenghi pie someone mentioned above. My ideal Christmas dinner is an ultimate curry feast, with lovely rices, lots of different veggie/pulse based curries, samosas and paneer, along with breads, chutneys and cold larger. Sadly I doubt I will ever get it!

What and in which layer of hell is 'tinned fish free tuna'?

In fact I don't actually think I want to know.
