Rose Elliot cashew roast. In fact I’d better make mine for the freezer soon

itsalwaysthesame · 03/11/2024 21:00

My daughter is veggie, she just has everything apart from the meat, I do separate sage & onion stuffing with fried mushrooms in puff pastry as we have sausage meat stuffing

hexsnidgett · 03/11/2024 21:03

Sometimes just the vegetables, have had different vegetarian sausages over the years, but best of all is vegetarian haggis.
Dm likes to make an onion tart for us veg types, which is nice enough, but she really needn't bother.

Boltonb · 03/11/2024 21:03

Non Turkey crown with stuffing. I think it’s a Sainsburys taste the difference one.

Also vegan pigs in blankets.

We cook everything to accommodate vegetarians, and just do a meaty gravy.

I have yet to meet a nut roast I like - they are mostly dense enough to have their own gravitational field, and claggy. I also can’t stand those meat substitutes, and cheese heavy stuff makes me heave - everyone suggests baked Camembert and blearugh.

On this year’s list is the Ottolenghi pie someone mentioned above. My ideal Christmas dinner is an ultimate curry feast, with lovely rices, lots of different veggie/pulse based curries, samosas and paneer, along with breads, chutneys and cold larger. Sadly I doubt I will ever get it!

I quite like the sturdiness as long as it's isn't dry (mushrooms are great for this) but a way to make nut roast less bomb proof in texture is to layer with roasted veg, herbs and a cheese that keeps its shape

Captainladder · 03/11/2024 21:12

Oooo we made this onion tart one year and it was amazing

and an ottolengi cauliflower cake which was delicious too.

Ultimate onion tart

This simple quiche is a classic veggie favourite

@housethatbuiltme this reminds me of my discussion with the school as to what exactly were fish free fish fingers

elastamum · 03/11/2024 21:22

We made a fabulous mushroom Wellington one year.

kikisparks · 03/11/2024 21:26

We used to always get the cheatin roast and tofurkey but last year just had the supermarket roasts and the “this isn’t” and Sainsbury’s ones were good. We’ve usually got a nut roast too and all the trimmings of course.

kikisparks · 03/11/2024 21:28

Oh yeah we usually have vegan pigs in blankets too, think last year made our own with Richmond sausages and Richmond vegan bacon.

We are vegans since a couple of years ago - last year we had juicy marbles loin. It was very very meaty, almost too convincing for one of us. It definitely felt like a celebratory meal.

Oooh thanks that’s sold out but I quite like the idea of adding a juicy marbles steak to the Christmas menu, have never tried one as never felt I could justify the cost!

Thank you very much. Too complicated for me unfortunately.

It’s worth it - absolutely delicious! I look forward to it every year

Asking all the people who say 'I just eat the veges' or 'mushroom tart and the veges' etc, do you not have any protein?

Veg does have some protein in it as does cheese sauce if you have cauliflower cheese. But for one meal it really doesn't matter

In our house there's bowls of nibbles including loads of nuts so plenty of opportunities to get protein 😄

thestudio · 03/11/2024 21:50

Oh just remembered - there’s a v reasonably priced Linda McCartney frozen roast that’s actually pretty good in a Greggs sort of way - ie not gourmet but v tasty

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 03/11/2024 22:08

I normally do myself a nut roast kind of thing with chestnuts with roasties, mash, veg etc. it's just for me as everyone else eats meat.

I do actually eat fish but not for Christmas dinner.

TheLette · 03/11/2024 22:23

I like one of the fancy individual pies that Waitrose sells, or I sometimes make a puff pastry slice thing with goats cheese and caramelised red onions. Pastry goes really well with a roast, in my opinion.

So basically a cheese and onion pasty?

TheDowagerCountessofPembroke · 03/11/2024 22:37

Our Christmas Day tends to consist of 2 vegans, 2 vegetarians and one meat eater. We have whatever Ocado do.

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 03/11/2024 16:56

Just the veg and roasties. Lush.

I’ve no interest in nut roast or the like.

Same here, I just like all the veggie bits: roast potatoes, parsnips, tenderstem, carrots and yorkshire puddings.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 03/11/2024 22:56

Another very long term veggie here saying please check re fake meat. There’s no way I could eat the loin thing, and I would eat a quorn roast but why? There’s loads of lovely imaginative food available which isn’t imitation meat.
we have had the mushroom and Stilton parcels from Lidl I think, also nut and mushroom Wellington, v good.
i do love a nut roast though, especially a parsnip one served with creamy mushroom sauce 😋

What and in which layer of hell is 'tinned fish free tuna'?

In fact I don't actually think I want to know.

I spotted veggie 'prawns' in Asda online!

I've been veggie for almost all my life and I've never tried a nut roast! Does it taste of nuts? Silly question I know. I used to have Linda McCartney's sausage rolls with my Christmas dinner but this year they seem to have changed and are no where near as nice as they once were. I'll have veg, roast potatoes, Yorkshires and onion gravy.

Depending on ingredients they normally taste like a nutty stuffing so what's not to like if you like stuffing?
Usual ingredients- Chopped/ground nuts, onions, some veg liked Chopped mushrooms or grated Carrots or roasted squash, maybe a cheese layer if not vegan , some herbs, some breadcrumbs. I like them quite chunky.
The M&S one is nice and the meat eaters have a bit like stuffing.

Rose Elliott clearly nailed it years ago. We used to do her chestnut and redwine en croute but prefer somewithout pastry now.

I make a couple of the Delia parsnip roulades every year as for a few of the guests it's not Christmas without it. It has many steps but comes together impressively at the end. My sincere advice is do not attempt it on Christmas day. It's definitely a day before task as you need space and pans to make it.

M&S seem to have changed the recipe by adding cheddar and kidney beans. I could swear it's been vegan for years?
They do have a vegan stuffed quorn type roast but that's annoying for vegans wanting a nut roast instead.

Yes they definitely did a vegan nut roast before. M&S is rubbish for vegans this year, they used to have much more. Thankfully some of the other supermarkets still seem to have decent options.
